    I was very naiive when I began and just started with very simple cleansing and self love spells without worrying too much. Then I strated to do more research and suddenly I felt I had been doing evrything wrong. Everybody was talking about deitys, wands, cauldrons and all these other things I had never used or, in some cases, never even heard about. So I began setting up an alter with deitys on that I never really felt a connection to. I worked with spells by others and went out of my way to follow them word for word and spent a lot of money on the way because I didn't have most of what was supposedly needed for it. All of that felt so wrong, that I stopped praciticing for years. And then I stumbled across a line somewhere saying that every witch has a different way of practicing and that you didn't have to be wiccan or work with deitys to be a witch and that blew my mind. So I had been right all along! I started my practice and my research once again but this time listening to what felt right for me and sticking to it. The void I had felt without the craft was filked and I couldn't be happier now! The one thing I do wish I had known and done from the beginning, is keeping a book of shadows. It would have been nice to look back at how I started, but it's okay. I keep several seperate ones and they are an invalble part of my craft.

      Congratulations on having found your way! That’s amazing 😊 We very much share the same experience. I started my journey out pretty much the same way over 20 years ago, with sincerity and intuition as my guides. Then I came upon my first Wiccan books and all through my teenage years I followed others’ scrips. Never felt right and led me to a couple of years of not practicing in early adulthood. I was called back however and eventually found my way. I’ve found me craft as well as myself and it’s a wonderful place to be spiritually.

Appropriation is a big topic. I'm from multiple cultures and I like to do ancestor type work, but because I have no teacher or other means to learn how to ancestor work, I'll seek guidance from others traditions to help guide me. Again, if you don't want to put barriers, share YOUR practices, but if other communities have boundaries we should respect them. it's the respectful think to do 😅 if you have ancestors in those communities you can access those practices, it’s not close to you! But research, maybe you need to be initiated to practice, maybe you need to study certain things, maybe you need to find an elder that can initiate you and mentor you. I think part of it is to learn these things so you don’t risk doing something that would be disrespectful to your ancestors, or simply doing things you might be getting from other communities that simply don’t resonate with them, making it harder for you to connect, because it’s not all the same, especially to our ancestors. Such great points. I first started practicing witchcraft more than 40 years ago. I say “first started” because I’ve restarted several times. As my life has changed, my path has changed, too, and I’ve been a beginner at something or everything just about forever. The life-long journey advice really hit home for me. If you’re always learning, you’ll always be beginning something, and I think that’s at the heart of living life as an adventure. The journey is the doing.
    Regarding closed practices, I avoid them for two reasons: Either they are exclusive groups that maintain secrecy and separation, and that might work for some people, but it’s not my scene. I don't dig exclusivity, in witchcraft or anything else, honestly. Or else the practices are someone else’s cultural tradition, and I want to respect them enough not to do their thing without their invitation. Being an American and from NYC, I come from a multicultural society, so if I feel a connection with a type of practice or a deity or spirit, I will work with them, but in my own way. I won't imitate their mother culture's rituals or language unless I am properly educated and welcomed into it. That's how I approach things.

    I find this really interesting as an Irish person when I see people talking about Samhain, Bealtaine, Lúnasa etc. which come from my culture (did you know all of these words are in Irish, our original language? : ) ). I see a lot of my culture being appropriated, particularly by English and American Witches. They don't even spend the few seconds it takes to learn how to pronounce the previously mentioned words, let alone learn about our history and where these festivals etc. come from. It can be especially hurtful when English Witches do it considering how our language & culture have been damaged (and almost erased in the case of our language, Gaeilge) by their ancestors. Sometimes it seems only some cultures deserve respect and not others. Just my rambling thoughts on the subject.

    My answer is when you have the right mindset towards the way things work.

      I've been in and out of practicing over the years but now I'm fully in. I've learned so much over the years but I love how we still learn pretty much forever - but the one thing that's super important is INTENTION. Its unique to each witch and is the foundation of literally everything!

      I consider myself a baby witch, I've had my own altars for years and have always had a connection to the natural. I dabble in rituals where I have guidance beforehand from a local shop I trust and am thankful to live in a place that allows such shops to exist. I'm finally accepting that I'm ready to learn past my intuition.
      Past this, I agree that INTENTION is very important. Growing up in conservative Christian areas of the US, the word "faith" is a very harsh and controlling word to me. It's a big reason why avoided diving into witchcraft because I have my own beliefs and any sense of organized religion brings be back to the oppression of being the outsider, not free to express my own thoughts or feelings. Again, this is my journey, but I think it is important for people to separate the common phrases used by organized religions that inflict harm on others. This is my opinion and is not meant to bring harm, but I want some awareness around it. Especially since that word itself was used against me in my youth.

    Beautiful flowers in your opening! I noticed very nice tools in your clean workspace. Protection is always utmost...prayers to your sacred space before embarking on any path. One can read many books and possibly get confused... step 1/4 7/9: where do I start? Am I a solitary practitioner -this used to be looked down upon in the craft. Now, not so much. There are many ways to create magic in our lives: gardening, cooking, house spells for cleaning, simple protections, incense creation, candle making, baking, starting seeds, and more. Outdoor experiences might "be a much" for neighbors, although there are ways to "camouflage" what you are doing...I am raking my yard, >I am really "clearing negativity and cleaning up trash in my life"...I am washing my vehicle >Using herbs in the rinse water, I am making my travels safe...I am lighting Tiki torches around my pool to dissuade insects, it's a 5-pointed star>...I am going to light a fire in my backyard fire bowl (SAFELY) and then maybe add a chunk of Palo Santo or resin - neighbors don't need to know... I am cleaning my shoes with a brush with Rosemary water (a mini broom) to keep my path walking forward...intention. Plant a "magical garden" - even if it is just one plant or a healthful plot producing vegetables and lovely flowers for your home and to share with friends.
    For "new folks" - I would like to share a thought on planting a tree: The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, and the next best time to plant a tree is TODAY. Plant your tree...
    WE are NOT the green-faced, warty-nosed, big-chin folks that are portrayed in movies and media - we are Nature workers...
    These are the "Old Ways", that many folks have forgotten - work with Nature as you see fit. Teach your children the magic of starting a bean seed. AVOID Weather magic workings! Craft your own tools - Make a wand from a gifted fallen tree branch, repurpose a butter knife to become your Athame - just my thoughts, and I am glad to have found your channel. Merry Meet, Merry Part, and Merry Meet again. Blessed Be!

    It is also good to remember that you, and the focus your spell is on are sometimes the only ingrediants you need. By will, sight, gesture, word, and breath you can direct your energy.

    I so appreciate that you discuss altering spells to make them your own. It took me a long time to understand that magick is intention made manifest... and that all the gear, the herbs, candles, colors, and spellwork..etc... are vehicles to help manifest intention. Years ago, I remember being so frustrated trying to cast a circle in traditional way.... and then something occurred to me.... I could do the very same thing.. but in my own way... understanding that it's more about calling upon the elements and directions... while setting intention. Since then I made my own path (something I do in general in my life in many ways)... and my practice has come to mean so much more to me... and is far more successful because it's mine and made by me. Honestly, I cannot think of anything more personal and unique than one's spiritual path. Thank you for your wonderful videos~

    I think what you are doing is very important and useful to the community as a whole, it's important for people to understand how natural and normal spiritual expression can be without all the stigma and tropes handed down by religious ties.
    We do these things everyday in every way because it brings joy and a sense of closeness with the over soul, just like the teachings of native peoples across the world we are all connected by this sacred bond, a bond of humanity and love of our brothers and sisters, whether you call it "magik" or expression of the will, it's of little consequence blessings to all and blessings to you for spreading useful information ❤️

    I wish I knew so much of these tips before I started. But it was a great learning process. And I’m still learning. One great book for beginners to read is Deborah Blake’s “Witchcraft On A Shoestring.” Even as an intermediary witch I still read beginner books !!!
    I have been doing unintentional spell work since I was a teen. And couldn’t believe what was going on and why/how it was happening. When I would wish/hope for things, I put so much intent and passion into it I made it came true. It was unreal ! Then I started practicing and realized why it happened. I got my gifts from my mom and I’m so glad because I love my gifts !!! I just have to learn how to control them better.

    Thank you for your guidance and encouragement. So many emotions arose while watching this. I started an herbalism course a few years back, I felt this excitement, love, and passion to learn more. But all the information was overwhelming at times and I would get in my head that many others do the same what is so special or unique about my practice. And there were other reasons I stepped back from the course. I'm at a point in my life that I'd like to reconnect with this passion and grow with my practice.

    Yes, I'm a 66yr old newbie to witchcraft. I've had signs all my life but being a single mom kept me busy. Now I'm retired. And kept busy with crafts and grandchildren.
    I adopted an 8yr. old cat from a shelter. I didn't know until I signed her papers, that her name was Minerva. She was my soul mate. I say was because she passed away from cancer. I see her sitting by her burial site in my backyard waiting for me.
    One day my oldest daughter (age 42) told me that I'm ignoring a calling.
    So, I made an alter and the first attempt I started meditation, Minerva came through!!! I was SO surprised. She handed me a green stone and told me to continue and that she would be with me.
    Every time I meditate, someone else comes through. Archangel Michael blew me away. I broke out in tears upon awakening.
    Hecate is beautiful and peaceful with a smile to light the world.
    I listen to your CZcams. I know nothing other than deities. It surely takes a LOT of energy. I am physically and mentally exhausted afterwards. I have sensations of nosebleeds but it doesn't actually happen. I'm I OK? Is what I'm doing OK?

Always learn-never stop. Shadow work is important but do so with CAUTION or guidance. Agree with the closed practices. I am overwhelmed by all of this. Accepting that I may have a calling to this and believing in the existence of Magic and it's presence in our every day life. I have in so many ways been witness to the power of Will and intent and even been the source. But my upbringing in Christianity put fear of all this in my heart,yet never extinguished the flame of curiosity. Forever searching for what felt right I've studied other faiths and religions but to no avail. My search is for knowledge and understanding of this world we live and why it is as it is. All leading to the here n now. Metaphysics. It then dawned on me that knowledge is power and those powers that be has meticulously and methodically stamped out those who had such knowledge in their pursuit of absolute power. If we all are in the darkness without faith in the light that is within us..we are all under thumb of those more educated in the arts. I've never been one of those "under thumb" . And have always known that just because you don't see doesn't mean it doesn't exist or is real. I'm not gonna call myself a witch but ...I am as magical as anyone else. Again ..ty for this💚

      The best way I can describe why a practice would be closed is to look at the genocide of indigenous people in the past. Once colonizers moved in and didn't agree with the indigenous way of life these people were murdered. Their books and tools and holy sites were burned and destroyed. The native tribes that are left in the US have lost so much of their history and spiritual practice it's amazing that they were able to rebuild at least some of it. Because of the horrible history surrounding the defamation and destruction of their craft they ask that it stay a closed practice so they can preserve what their ancestors built. I think it is healthy to educate yourself on the history of these practices but it is important to be respectful and not use their beliefs in your own practice because they have specifically asked you not to. There's also a lot of other factors that go into keeping a practice closed, like many cultures believe the only way their magic works is because of the heritage that they have. An outsider won't have that heritage to use. I hope this helps, and I am coming from a respectful and non judgmental place.

    • @terasaur1359
      @terasaur1359 Před 3 lety +6

      many practices are sacred and culturally specific. Plus you can get fucked up messing around with things that don’t belong to you. The warning is there for a reason.

    • @AvalonMagique
      @AvalonMagique Před 3 lety +3

      Agree. Yes, we do need to respect the spiritual practices of others, and try not to horn our way into something we don't understand --- lest we end up with egg on our faces, and/or inadvertently zap our rear ends into spiritual oblivion. However, I think we need to be kinder to ourselves. If we continue down the path where we are closing off spiritual practices to those not of a set region/culture, we'll find ourselves with nothing left to practice with. We'd have to let go of saging our homes because we're not Native American; we'll have to also drop Frankincense and Myrrh because it's middle eastern in origin, and we're not from that part of the world; get rid of one's Isis statue and any thought of worshipping her because one is of European ancestry.....the list goes on. If an indigenous spiritual leader is willing to advise an outsider on a spiritual matter, and guide the outsider, I see that as a beautiful aspect of our global community. You see this in Santeria/Voodoo. People outside of the cultures turn to the Santeria/Voodoo practitioner for help in improving their lot in life.

    I am the same, there's things I wish i knew when i started and before i started. but as i walk through my journey there's things i learned and things changed from what i knew. my learnings become re-written as the further and further i go. i called myself a wiccan back in 2009 and took full serious in 2018 on practicing witchcraft because i hesitated doing spells and thought of just being a herbal maiden because i was still in conflicts from what i thought i knew when really i knew nothing. i feel comfortable calling myself an eclectic green witch more than an eclectic elemental witch even though elemental is still one of my practice just like hedge, kitchen, crystal, and necrotic. but green witchery is still my top most formal as i feel the energy when i am handling the plants the most like i do when i go to a store and get a new gem or two....or eight XD. my path is continuing and as i learn i teach those who are looking to learn but i tell them this, what i learn will be different from what they can learn and experience. no two witch is the same. :3 i always enjoy your calming videos
