V11E5: Getting to Know the Camp-X

  • This episode kicks off with impressions of the Jeep Gladiator Sport, which was my rental vehicle while my own Jeep was being serviced at OK4WD in New Jersey. I consider the viability and merits of a pick-up truck based overland travel platform. Rin takes us on a tour of the 2020 Overland Explorer Camp-X slide-in camper for full-size trucks. Back in my orange Jeep, I go over the work that was performed, including maintenance to the Webasto Air Top 2000 STC gasoline heater. A shorter episode than usual this week to spend time catching up with family!

Makes you want to go as cheap as possible, just to spite the price. For $40,000 USD, you could buy a JKU Rubicon and the Ursa Minor, plus some solid upgrades.

Good information on the Camp X camper. Yes it’s pricey but a loaded Four Wheel pop top camper is the same or more. I like the fit, finish and overall build of Camp X much more than the Four Wheel line up of pop tops

As per FCA though, Power Wagons are forbidden to have a camper in them, they handed me a piece of paper that explicitly stated this when we got the one we had (2016). It has to do with the springs, from what an engineer from Ram said.

I'm excited that my wife agreed to let me check out and test drive a new unit. I may get to trade my Compass (which I love) for a Rubicon model. At the price they're asking there won't be any mods in the near future. I'll be looking forward to your next adventure and hopefully 2021 will be a vast improvement over 2020. That camper is extremely well built, I enjoyed the tour. Your Jeep is still my favorite though. Being able to access your tent from inside the vehicle is unique especially when the weather is bad, and the way you have it setup is almost perfect. I wonder if that full size platform would be as capable as your Jeep? Otherwise a 4x4 van would give you more inside comfort. I love the Winnebago Revel. At some point you have to sacrifice off-road ability for comfort. I look forward to your videos more than any other on CZcams!

Hey Chris, you may want to look at SCOUT Olympic Overland Camper. It is a slide in for small trucks like the Gladiator. It is easily modifiable, small and lightweight, and not a lot of power is needed to operate. I’m eating for the Kenai model for my F250 as it is a little larger than the scout. I plan to install it on my f250 and trailer my 2015 JK on my adventures. Also look at the Kimbo.

An Alaskan truck camper seems to be the best value in pop up campers. Although your set up may have some short comings it seems to work best for you at least at this point. Given the sorts of adventures you've been on this year, were I you, I'd be giving some serious consideration to the Ecodiesel, in either the JL or the Ram 1500. The trifecta of turbo power at altitude, longer range (especially with an auxiliary tank), and the ability to run a diesel Webasto from your main tanks, would seem pretty obvious, with the only downsides being price and complexity.

Liked hearing your perspective on the gladiator given your history in the wrangler. I had just been doing some reading on it and it seems Jeep has had some trouble with the sales numbers. Apparently its sitting right in between not having enough truck capability, not having as good off road capability as the wrangler, and serious wind issues with the top off that are not present in the wranglers. When the guy said they couldn't do the camper for it, I was like, see it just fits in a non functional niche.

    $36,000 to $40,000 for that Camper X?
I think that may be a little too high.

Hey sorry about that. Some things came up preventing release of video on the 12th, and I feel really bad about dropping the ball. I do post public updates if you're ever curious on Facebook and Patreon.

Hey Chris, have you looked at the Scout Campers slide-ins?

  • @stantonfamilytruckster7620

I hope Chris is ok he hasn’t posted the last two weeks and he usually does. Driving out it the middle of nowhere alone can be dangerous. Hopefully he is doing well.
