- I didn't expect Cincinnati, OH to look like this...WOW! A city high in crime, poverty, and blight, it's looking rough in these areas. With a steady decline in population for decades and overall lack of growth, this city is in need of a revitalization in many areas. While the amenities and cost of living are excellent, unemployment and median income are terribly below the national average. Can the city overcome these problems and succeed? I can only hope so. There are of course nice areas of housing and commercial growth like anywhere else, but for now let's take a drive and check out some of the worst and most dangerous areas of Cincinnati, Ohio.
Imagine what all those little stores fronts must have had available back in the '60s

Just think how it must have looked in the 1920's. Almost brand new. Just busaling with activity. Before all of the big box stores came to be.
This is really in the U. S.A.. I am speechless.. They need to take care of home first before they send money abroad.

Yes, some of Cincinnati has been abandoned. But it is still a thriving city with a rich culture.
I'm 57 and was born in Cincinnati. Lived in Price Hill until my 40s. We used to spend a lot of time downtown. It had the big name department stores and Fountain Square. I have a lot of great memories of Cincinnati.
Were you there for the Who concert in '79?
Sad now Downtown there isn't any more stores left in the mall
When they took down the sky walk things started to change.

In the first 3 minutes, that's Vine Street at where Hollywood had shot a movie "Traffic" with Michael Douglas.
Omg... I'm originally from Cincinnati. From 77-99. I'm from 219 hearne ave avondale. Ran all over the streets of the zoo, coryville, Clifton, Ludlow, the old hospital complex. Walking underneath the ground from the zoo to u.c. campus. All over north and south avondale. 150 and 36 Kraft in the bricks.. winton terrace. Journey through the woods of winton place finlator gardens and top ridge, the guild and the recreation center saved a brother. North college hill, Northgate, and college hill, forest park, English woods, otr, north side, walnut hill, Evanston Norwood elm place, downtown... there wasn't very many places I wasn't in. Back then just east torwards lunkin airport and western hills was bad. But seeing you only ride through the project was bad. Downtown otr broke my heart. They are getting it together slowly. Block by block... hate to see the gentrification though. Its enough segregation here... overall good job taking me back to a lot of hoods I once stepped through back in the yesteryears....
If this is Over-the-Rhine, this has to be more than a year ago.

Seriously, this is absolutely no different than any other part of the Rust Belt.
New housing, revitalization of old factories.
Priced anywhere from $1,200-$1,700/month.
It’s horrible and the decay is running full force.
Many of the larger cities in Ohio look like this. It is so sad. I am 57 and have lived in Ohio all my life. I live in a small town so riddled with drugs and crime that it is no longer safe to go out after dark

For smaller cities, think Dayton, Toledo, Findlay, Lancaster, etc. And There's parts of Cbus that look exactly like this; check out the Mt. Carmel West and Children's Hospitals areas. 😱
I've lived in Cincy since 2001 and have seen SO much change in those 22 years. Most areas are much nicer. But like any city, there are neighborhoods and areas that struggle and always have. It's a catch 22, as far as tearing things down and/or "revitalizing" areas. That's being done all over, but unfortunately- as others have mentioned- that also means an increase in rent. For residences and businesses alike. What was once affordable becomes unattainable and lower income folks are pushed out. Finding a balance is hard. I'm very proud of how far this place has come, though. I used to live in Memphis and Arkansas. I'd pick Cincy over either one, any day!!

Cincinnati is kind of strange in that the bad areas are usually in pockets around the city because the hills can break up neighborhoods. In flatter cities there is usually one really large bad area that stands out. Over-the-Rhine is were there is a lot of investment activity just blocks from downtown but be careful, one block in the wrong direction can land you in trouble.
I'm from Columbus Ohio. Economically its better. But Cincinnati is a much more culture rich place to live by no comparison. You'll actually live a better life and happiness in Cincinnati

about 3 of those clips, you was riding through low income housing projects my guy. Stanley Rowe, Moosewood, Millville, Winton Terrace, Dutch Colony. There is no hope for them, but some of the other ones were neighborhoods. The city can't contain the crime, so they are mainly starting the gentrification from downtown and working their way up. Moving the urban people further to the outskirts of where they are revitalization at. Its a process but alot has changed since they filmed the movie "In Too Deep" in 99 downtown.
Had the same thoughts while watching this video. I've lived in Cincy most of my life and downtown is probably one of the most expensive places to live now was the opposite about 10 to 15 years ago..Ex Mayor Cranley initiated the west side revival so eventually that area will be regentrivied as well. Alot of needed and some not changes goin on in our town. I love to traveling but I love coming home to my City 💕🐅

Cincinnati is also known for its beauty , for example we have Italianate architecture our downtown area is walking friendly and the magnificent Netherland hotel...

I have lived in cities all over the U.S. (and the world) we came back to Cincinnati because it is really quite nice. Like most cities, in the 1950''s through the 1970's, whites fled to the suburbs and abandoned the inner city and these areas fell into decay. In the video, I recognized were Lower Price Hill, Lower Liberty and Upper Vine. These are still blighted areas that have high crime rates and urban decay. If you had continued the viseo a little farther down Vine Street, you would have seen a swarm of scaffolding outside buildings that are being renovated. A bit farther and you would have seen a vibrant restaurant and entertainment district. Areas like Northside, Norwood, and Clifton which once were blighted, but have since seen major renovation projects, and are now in demand as trendy places to live. Of course, when renovation occurs low income residents get displaced but the city has recently budgeted millions recently for new, low income housing. Change doesn't happen overnight but overall, the transformation that has occurred over the last ten years has been nothing short of phenomenal.

I live here in cincinnati and as a native i can say my city looks better inn the summer I don't know why but winter give it a Gothom look
It's the samething here in Cleveland. We got that gloomy look in the winter. It look alot better in the summer.

I don't know what's sadder...the blocks and blocks of blighted storefronts or the abandoned church with its windows broken.
That church has been vacant for decades. Used as a senior center in the 70s.
The abandoned churches for sure. At least the storefronts are all boarded up awaiting revitalization

This is so sad....when I watch videos like these and think of the people who invested their hearts and souls into these homes and businesses, it's truly heartbreaking.
It ain’t nothing wrong
I lived in Cincy years ago. Some parts are getting better, others not so much. Large parts of OTR look totally different today as compared to 2009 or so.
There are a lot of good new things happening in Cincinnati. But there are areas of the city that have been ignored for decades and are still struggling mightily.
I currently live in a section that isn't the best to live it, considering how flimsy the apartments are in here. Luckily, there's not too much vandalaization near me. The other kids, not so lucky.
It is so sad to see the cities of my State Ohio going to ruins. I'm 56 years old and grew up going from Cincinnati to Cleveland to totally different cities back then. So sad.
What are some of the main differences?
It's taken Columbus 30 years to get it's Short North area and Arena district to look like something presentable.
I think the reason they even tried
( spent serious money ) is because of having the Ohio State University just down the road.

Born & raised in Cincinnati!! 🤑💪🏼 love Cincinnati wit everything in me! But there are more abandoned houses & buildings than there are places for ppl to live! It used to be worse than it is now believe it or not! Before they started trying to build it up for the rich ppl , they tore down my house I grew up in & built a house for the rich 🤦♂️ I will always love the Cincinnati no matter what 💪🏼🤷♂️ 513 forever 🤑
What happened? The exact same things that happened to every single big and medium sized city in the countrey. This doesn't require an advance degree in nuclear physics!

4:30. WINTON TERRACE
I think Downtown Cincinnati and much of the city in between 71 and 75 is fairly safe. They've even done good work trying to clean up the crime in Over-The-Rhine.
However, you get west of I-75, or follow U.S. 50 West, and it gets rough real quick. I'd pretty much not recommend going west of I-75 unless you are a student at Mount St. Joseph and can stay on that campus entirely.
Parts of Covington and Newport are a little rough, but generally speaking, the Kentucky side is safer especially as you go up the hill on 71/75 or 471 and head into Alexandria, Fort Thomas, Cold Spring, Crestview Hills, Erlanger, and Florence.
The west side of Cincinnati just hasn't had the same attention to infrastructure that the Downtown and East Cincinnati sections have had.
What exactly makes it rough?
Most of OTR is still in shambles and it is still just as dangerous. They've improved 2 streets, loaded them with bars, but the rest of OTR isn't much different then it used to be.
@@danieldaniels7571 crumbling infrastructure on that side of town that isn't addressed, plus fact that each of the five most dangerous neighborhoods (English Woods, North Fairmont, South Fairmont, Sedamsville and South Cumminsville) and nine of the top-10 are all located west of I-75, the only exception being Over-The-Rhine.

Omg me and my sisters use to catch the bus to fountain square all the time, it use to be so much fun. With a little work from the mayor , city council who everrrrrr and the people it can be rebuilt, and with some hard work and Love 💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾just my opinion

My Grandparents lived in one of those old row houses on Colerain Ave, near the bottom of the hill
I'm 60 & I remember my mama and I going downtown to Pogues, Shilitos, Newberry. So much has changed. Now they're moving the working class poor out from downtown for the upper working class.
I remember Shillito's had a cool Christmas display every year and calling their number to get the exact time in the day before computers.

What I found interesting was, no matter what condition the buildings were in, a lot of the the cars parked along the roads seemed to be newer with many of them luxury vehicles.

Have you ever been run up on while driving through a ‘hood or holler? Seems dangerous.
I continue to be amazed at the nice, new vehicles that line the streets of these abandoned, run-down areas: they seem so out of place. I counted only four cars in this video that were older or in bad shape.
Thought the same thing about the cars.
The old "they sure have nice cars for so-called poor people". There is some truth to it though.

I remember watching WKRP in Cincinnati as a child and thinking that it was a pretty good sized city. I guess it was at one point. You should try Cleveland next.

I went to Cincinnati University about 4 years ago. I took bus to downtown alone vine street, it looked like this.
I’m also from Cincinnati & currently live here. Although the downtown area along vine etc has been undergoing vast renovations over the past 5 years or so, there is much work to do. It’s also a “double edged sword” considering the majority of investors have driven the rent prices up just over the past year by 39%, the HIGHEST percentage increase in the nation in 2021-22.
This fact only helps to compile an already astronomical wage gap. The rich get richer, while the poor get poorer.
My hometown. Moved out in 2013 to beautiful Colorado. Spent time in juvenile a few times, memories...
Lived behind Withrow HS as a kid. I used to bike all over town but there were certain areas I wouldn't go into. Even on some major roads you felt like your life could end at any time just minding your own business.
Crime was just getting too high in Cincinnati and it was always raining lol.

I am French and I have never been to the USA. I always imagined that Cincinnati was a charming and pleasant city...but what I see on the video shows me that reality is far from what I imagined... there must be more attractive neighborhoods anyway

I've been in the northern suburbs of Cincinnati since 2006. We certainly don't have reason to venture into some of these areas, but places like Millvale, English Woods and South Fairmount have had their issues for many years. Walnut Hills also has a bad reputation, though the more southern borders of that area have seen some investment in recent years. Parts of OTR have been revamped, but there are still many bad pockets there. I'm not sure if you also included some Avondale footage, but that neighborhood has been synonymous with crime for years. My wife and I looked at a few houses in South Fairmount to renovate, as we do house flipping on the side. One was a beautiful, sturdy house from the 1920s or so. Probably nicer than most of the houses we have worked on, but we would likely have broken even if we tried to flip it due to lower resale value. We didn't want to rent it out for years, so we passed. Definitely a lot of beautiful, older homes with potential in some of these neighborhoods, but you'd need to clean up entire blocks at a time.
It never ceases to amaze me how many dilapidated properties there are in the U.S. and how they are allowed to stand. Tear them down!!
You don’t see this here in Austin TX. Someone will buy that property, tear it down, and build something very modern in its place.
Even though most are vacant but structurally sound, there's a lot of Historical information. I think any vacant property should have a time limit on being vacant.
I would rather see them reused and stop building more and more. There's no land and trees left as it is in these places

Reminds me of the Hill District section of Pittsburgh (where I grew up). Both Cincinnati and Pittsburgh are hilly cities with twists and turns everywhere when you are driving around.

Right outside of downtown Cincy - Vine Street and surrounding area is where this is at. Towards the end of the video, is closer to the “over the rhine” area which surprisingly isn’t too far from UC. Those areas have been in decline since the early 2000’s. Now it’s just a hollow shell. The nicer areas of Cincy are the suburbs.
Some of the suburbs are pretty bad too. Lincoln Heights, North College Hill, and parts of Colerain and Springfield townships can be just as dangerous as the Cincy neighborhoods. I've also heard that Norwood is starting to get pretty rough.

The main cities are all starting to look alike to me Cincinnati,Youngstown Akron,Cleveland,Dayton etc. I moved out of Cleveland 17 years ago.

considering how expensive housing is in most of the US this might be a good thing for people looking to own their own home regardless of the neighborhood. I would buy a home that needed work if the price was right. aka cheap. cant get a small home for 100k or under in most urban areas.
We have a house here built in 1916. Definitely needs a bit of cosmetic work to restore a couple of rooms to what it was before "renovations" were done in what looks like the 60's, but it was only $35,000 🤷 still has original woodwork, floors, roof, etc in great shape. No structural issues, either.
Same thing here now. Homes that were 100-150k are now going for 300-450k

For all that's said about the rough neighborhoods, they are always the one's with all the historic buildings and maybe rich history, if only those old structures could talk,

Moosewood was pretty bad to live in half of the time, but I lived in the subsection of bowling green ct. and it was a pretty bad neighborhood as well
I used to live on Beekman about a block from Mr Gene's, the ambulance and police used to be flying down Beekman to get to Millvale/Moosewood every friday & saturday night.
Look at old downtown area. The earlier 20'- 50' architecture are so detailed and built strong. now turning in to blight . The city should be into redeveloped to modern business and housing.
