This song was written by Paul Williams. Paraphrasing a quote I once read from Paul, "I was a struggling songwriter just trying to get any band to record one of my songs and it be anywhere on their album. Then, one day, an angel sang my song, and changed my life forever." That angel was Karen Carpenter.

The story is, not long after their first hit, Richard Carpenter was watching TV and the first verse was in a bank commercial (about a couple starting out). He got the rights to record it. Richard Carpenter heard a snippet of this song on a TV commercial for Crocker Bank home loans aimed at first time buyers. He recognised the singer was lyricist Paul Williams, better known today as President of ASCAP, who he contacted to find out if it was a whole song. It really wasn't complete but Carpenters were a big deal after the unexpected success of their cover of Bacharach & David's Close to You, so Williams didn't waste any time coming up with something on which Carpenter could again work his magic as an arranger. Coming full circle generations later, Lloyds Bank in the UK were again using a cover of the song in a TV campaign promoting mortgages for first-time house buyers in 2022.

One of the great voices. The Carpenters were considered to be so square when I was growing up - it wasn't until I listened again in my late 20's that I realized how great they actually were and how AMAZING Karen's voice was (and Richard's arrangements.) Just a beautiful, beautiful voice. Such a tragedy she died so young.

@@kendoglarson5419 I didn't grow up with judgement around me and more than you did - in the early 70's, when the "cool" music was so different, the Carpenters were widely looked at in the U.S. and Canada as being square as hell, regardless of how awesome her voice was. That's a fact. I was around 9, so don't blame me.

Brad hit the nail on the head with the "starting a family vibe." The first verse of the song literally describes a wedding:
    White lace and promises
A kiss for luck and we're on our way
As others have said, the song started out as a bank commercial with the purpsoe of selling mortgages to newlyweds. When Richard Carpenter asked Paul Williams if there was more to the song, there really wasn't, but Paul figured that if Richard was willing to sing the rest of the song, Paul was happy to write it, so he said there was more and that he would get it to him. The rest is history.
