Haha I have this exact bathroom... the 50's tile (but in green) and the thick cement behind it. We're doing what was supposed to be a "facelift" remodel but now I'm learning we should probably replace the 3-handle valve and I'm overwhelmed.

I recently change one. Fortunately the home owner had a box of extra tiles. I raised if to 48 ins and replace the tiles and cover the holes. Oh btw I would have use my grinder or sawsaw to that pipe

Had a rehab at a 110 unit complex and they put 70% of the moen posi temp valves in upside down. It sucks because I always forget to look and see what way the carts installed when I replace the cartridges. Luckily I found a ona puller makes the job quick and easy
Great job on the tub and shower valve I've installed 10 or 12 moen valve not a big fan ,but I've installed 100's of delta valves I like them better but some don't.
I like Delta valves, but a big fan of moen. Both great Valves and popular in the trades
The problem with Delta and Moen is not their valves but their ugly cover plates. It took a while, but I tracked down a beauty made by Symmons.

They make Dremmel bits and tile chisels that would make the demo a whole lot more accurate , neat , symmetrical and therefore better looking...in my estimation , may have saved time as well...kind of a win-win scenarioo...as a pro - this matters to me.

My house was built in 1994. 2-handles in my stand-alone shower and 3 handles in the tub/shower. I’m having my bathrooms refilled so not trying to to save the old wall. All of my bathrooms are built without access to the plumbing in the back of the tub and/or shower. Once the wall is open should a reputable remodeler be able to get to the pipes needed to covert my 2 and 3 handles to 1?

To answer your question, yes, once the wall is opened, a reputable remodeler should indeed be able to access the necessary plumbing to convert your 2 and 3-handle systems to a 1-handle system. This conversion is quite common in bathroom renovations and it usually involves installing a new mixing valve. The mixing valve, which is what the single handle controls, regulates the blend of hot and cold water that comes out of your faucets or shower head.
Please bear in mind, however, that while this conversion is technically possible, there can be variables which might increase complexity or cost. For instance, the spacing between the hot and cold water supply lines may need to be adjusted to fit the new mixing valve. Also, your current plumbing may be made from materials that require special care or additional work to modify.
In addition, if you have any code requirements or particular brands/models in mind for the new fixtures, you should discuss this with your remodeler upfront to ensure compatibility with your existing plumbing.

I'm going to strip out the single handle thing the plumber put in, and install a 3 handle fixture. Right now it is either crank the water heater or goose bumps.
I do understand, but the single handles shower and tub faucet are to protect kids and disabled people from getting burn by turning on just the hot by itself. This is why you don't see 2 and 3 handle tub and shower faucets in newer homes built after the early 80's they have been outlawed. The single handle faucet will not turn on if hot and cold are not mixed. Making it very hard for anyone to burn themselves with just hot water.

Your right, but this is not the standard tile wall that most people are used to. This wall is all cement with a tile overlay. These homes were built during the cold war.
They're built like war destruction-proof Shelters very thick wall floor basement heavy-duty reinforce steel cement floors and walls. and the homeowner was doing a lot of the work himself. I was just limited to the plumbing. Could it have been done differently? Yep $$$$$$$$$$$

I prefer separate hot and cold handles. They are more useful.
Can you do this in a mobile home? The moens that I have looked at say not for Mobil home! My 97 year old mother cannot turn handles any longer.
I see. Yes some older mobile homes are different. The walls in some older mobile homes are to thin to fit a standard tub and shower valve in. I would have to see what your working with. Sorry 😐

Hey, all these tub fixture videos say I have to access behind the plumbing. I have no idea how to do that or how to figure it out. Any tips? My house was built in the 1920’s but the bathroom has been “remodeled” (not very well, in my opinion).

Depends on if you have galvanized or copper pipes. We were quoted $400 for copper - up to $1000 if needing to deal with old galvanized pipes. That included all parts and labor except the rough in valve.

Can you do this same work from the front? I do not have access to the back without tearing out a wall but I am completely redoing the surround and tub so I have the front side open.

Great video brother I wish they were all that easy I'm working on one now back to back that's a freaking hassle I hate having to take out the galvanized riser but the existing trim plate was humongous in order to have my valve sit right I had to remove it if not it would have been a big gap between the new cover plate and the existing hole. I have no clue in hell how I'm going to strap the shower head either LOL I guess they're just going to mud it in when they patch the sheetrock 🤦😝😂

@@theartofplumbing I know about that my dad told me he did it before LOL what I ended up doing on this one I glued two inch and a half nineties together but it up and then stuck the hubs towards the other wall and then just screwed the drop out into the 90s I mean you can't Yank on it but at least it's not flopping all over the place LOL

Thank you very much for this video! I found you on Google and just subscribed. You've answered my questions regarding upgrading a legacy bathtub/shower combo to a one-handle style. I was hoping to avoid having to solder pipes since I don't want to accidentally burn my house down. My current setup has a diverter spout and two handles, but a third handle like the before setup in this video seems to perform the same function as the pull-up part of the diverter faucet. Can a three-handle set with a non-diverter spout be interchanged with a two-handle set with a diverter spout? I'm finding a better selection of bathtub shower sets that I like with three handles rather than two. What would be involved in changing from a two-handle to a three-handle setup aside from having to make a hole for the third handle? The tub currently has diabolically ugly fake tile paneling around it so I don't care about messing it up. I plan to replace it with subway tile anyway but would like to get the tub hardware replaced before installing new tile. Thank you for any insights you can share.🙏

Grinders can put out a lot of dust.
