To be invited by a legend to share the 50th Anniversary remake of his iconic masterpiece ... well, that's the Award of a lifetime! Together, these 6 voices created another masterpiece. I love having Don McLean on my playlist again after all these years. It may be difficult for a young Australian, DJ, to follow the historical references in the lyrics, but you will not miss the mastery of the arrangement!

Love this remake of this classic song. Can't believe it came out 50 years ago. Don McLean still has a good voice for his age. And love hearing all the guys take a turn in a verse. Poor Adam had to do such a long stretch of beatboxing but he nailed it. Think the song is about 8 min. long. Don McLean received his Hollywood Star on the Walk of Fame recently & Home Free was invited to sing a portion of this song there. What an honor for them.
"American Pie" pays tribute to the loss of 3 legends who died so young (Buddy Holly, Richie Valens & The Big Bopper). A lot of references in the song are made to many artists from the early days of music including Elvis, Janis Joplin, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Byrds & others.

DJ, this is the song of my generation. The day this was released (Oct 24th, 1971) I was in 6th grade at Everglades Elementary School here in Miami, FL and by the end of the year everyone in our class had memorized this song, and I heard ut in bus field trips for rest of my school years. Chance surprises a lot of folks.....he hit's some really high notes for him (and does it perfectly) but to me it's that ending....the arrangement is just STELLAR !!! Those harmonies are unequaled

I was 8 years old when the plane crash took the lives of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper in Feb. of 1959; and was in my second year of college when this song first aired in 1972. So I really date myself. I lived through all those times referenced in the song and then some. I love your reactions to Home Free and enjoy following you here. Looking forward to your next encounter with whatever genius our boys come up with next.

I'm so old that I remember when this song was new (1972). I think the age in Don McLean's voice only adds to the poignancy of the song. American Pie is truly a masterpiece covering everything from the tragic plane crash to Altamont, Kent State to Janis Joplin. Home Free's exquisite harmonies, singing & beatboxing re-invigorate the original. Thanks for playing this & your comments.

I just relooked it up here’s what it said
"A long, long time ago," Don McLean began writing a rock epic with those words.
It's now been 50 years since "American Pie" - all eight and a half cryptic minutes of it - took hold of the airwaves in 1971, and it's safe to say there's never been another song like it.

A huge statement has been reinforced numerous times over the last half dozen years when notorious artists have collaborated with Home Free in singing legacy hits and in several cases have reached out to Home Free. Home Free has shown extraordinary respect to these artists to the point there is mutual respect and admiration that is very visible both ways. Home Free is a very humble group of guys who know how to pay their respects as they showcase these well-respected and well-known artists. Just wow, and we are the benefactors of this wonderful trust as they deliberately give each other and us a chance to enjoy once again a freshness to the decades that gone on before us with a wonderful tribute. Home Free is showing the industry a strong core value of High Regard, Strong Consideration, Attentiveness, High Opinion, and Due Regard for those who have set the stage for the music we enjoy today.
Thank You Home Free, for your leadership by action that we all admire and appreciate doing things the right way!!!!! ❣

Thank God they bought out their record contract and stuck to their convictions on how they preform and sing. Remember on the Sing Off, producers only wanted Austin or Tim to sing lead. But the guys are humble professional about it and lets the song pick who and what parts each of them will sing. Thus have given us as good if not better than the og version of songs and great og songs by them as well. I just wish I could listen to them on broadcast radio, and see them blow the charts off the wall. even Rob and Austin's "Two Country boys sing opera" would make the top 10 on billboard charts. lol

Paramount+ has/had a documentary, The Day the Music Died, that starts with the plane crash that took The Big Bopper, Buddy Holly, and Ritchie Valens and continues through Don McLean writing the song. Home Free appears in the film and Tim and Austin (and maybe Chance) speak about what the song means to them. Don meets Ritchie’s sister at the Surf Ballroom which is where the three deceased men performed the night of the crash. Don also does a run through of American Pie explaining what he meant in each of the lyric lines. Crap! Now I need to see if I can watch it again! Great job, DJ!

You are so great at reacting to Home Free's songs!!! Love them all so much. How special Don wanted them to arrange this and make it more up tempo, which Darren Rust sure did that. There is a behind-the-scenes of them working with Don and he says to Darren to make him sound better since he's old now. lol! And in an interview after I heard Don say he wanted Home Free because "they understand harmonies so well." Wow! What a tribute to them. This song was so much about the sad times in the US in the '60s, the assassinations of both Kennedys, MLK Jr, about the Vietnam war and the horrible riots, protests, campus shootings with students and National Guard at Kent State, about how the young, young soldiers (many fled to Canada to keep from being drafted) went to war and came back to a lot of hatred towards them for even fighting in such a controversial war. Don paid tribute in his own way as he's said before to this difficult time for all of us who lived thru it. Most of our friends and my fiance, later my husband, went to war. So many memories. Thanks again and keep reacting to this great group of guys! Oh yes, be sure to do Kenny Rogers and the guys Children Go Where I Send Thee! You will LOVE it! Take care.

I was a pre teen when this first came out. It's one of my favorite songs. The 60's were a turbulent time in the USA. Things changed after the assassination of President Kennedy in 1963. Then in 1968 Senator Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr were both assassinated. We had the Vietnam war and The Civil Rights Movement. War protests and a lot more. I think this song mirrors some of that. I really love this version. Love your reaction.

One thing I've noticed about Home Free (and VoicePlay, for that matter) is that the BVs (background voices) match the lead's vowels. So even though the boys would normally sing "die" is more like "dah" because of their country/southern accents, since McLean sings the full diphthong "dah-ee", they do, too. It's subtle but if you're listening, you'll hear it. (And thanks to either Jennifer Glatzhofer, The Charismatic Voice, Peter Barber, or Lolli Wren (Fairy Voice Mother) for pointing it out so that now *I* notice it. :) )

It will be very interesting to see DJ's take on this song. Don McLean is awesome with his vocals after 50 plus years of singing it and Home Free is their usual adorable selves, but the song itself is tricky. 1. Its a coming of age song, which most of us can get. 2. It is a 60's music song with a good deal of snark about the British Invasion. 3. There are a number of American Colloquialisms. In short, thw whole thing is a metaphor for living in the US between February of 59, and February of 69. and a whole bunch of post baby boom Americans are scratching their heads and saying "I Don't get it" We'll see about an Aussie..

I just love this song. Don and our guys are both phenomenal. Indeed, I think Don was 75 when making this. I mean, surely, studio work can be helpful, they might have tinkered a bit with his parts to make them shine. But I am not willing to believe there is any studio magic (or that Home Free would be willing to turn to it) that would make his voice so smooth, velvety, flexible for such an elderly gentleman. It's just there.
I also love that this longer song with the many verses offers a great opportunity to give a chunk of song for each of our boys to play with. Chance showing off his incredible range and flexibility that he usually just very humbly uses for perfect background support, Austin soaring high and being a star, Rob spreading his gifts, Tim going for his non-bassy work, and all the while, Adam drumming his mouth off like there's no tomorrow. Lovely.

I was a lonely nerdy preteen girl staying afterschool in the art room making Christmas gifts listening the the art teacher's 8-track of Don McLean where I learned about the music dying... We sang Bye Bye Miss American pie... a generation lost in space...

Someone may have already mentioned this, but this came out just before Don received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. They were even part of that celebration. I wasn't even born for quite a while when Buddy Holly, Big Bopper & Ricky Valens died. But I remember my older brothers and sister singing this when they were in their teens and listening to this kind of music in school and afterwards. My parents were pretty strict when it came to what music we were allowed to listen to in the house so they would go next door or across the street to listen to other kinds of music. I think this song in particular my mom may have liked tho because she liked Buddy Holly - if I remember right that is. But I love the guys take on this song, especially with Don singing with them - or vice versa that is

It actually is a sad song, so they added some somber moments to it to reflect that. It's written about the death of The Big Bopper, Buddy Holly, and Richie Valens and how it affected himself and everyone else. Now listen to the lyrics again, and see how it makes sense now.

I was 4 when this came out so I actually learned it later on obviously… a guy in my area who plays guitar for a living used to play it as his last song of his performance, that is how I first heard it and learned to love it. Such a long song with so many verses, but it never feels that way because it is such an emotional story! Having so many verses gave all the guys a chance to sing a verse which is very cool! 😎 Also an amazing chance for them to be able to sing with Don, this was such an awesome arrangement with him!❤ Getting to the last verse and the ending was so emotional, maybe even more so than the original!
    Love your awesome reactions!❤❤

And goodness--one wonders how the amazing Adam Rupp was able to beatbox through such a long song without passing out!! 🤯

I'm pretty sure those haunting high notes in the last verse were Adam Rupp. Just like in How Great Thou Art he's way up there countering the ominous base notes. Gorgeous combination.

I think my life kinda ran in front of me as all the events listed in the song have happened...I think Home Free & Don McLean did an awesome job on this...Rupp did a non stop beatboxing for 8+ minutes & I read somewhere that Home Free had to give him some oxygen when it was over...don't know if that's true or not but he was excellent in this as he always is!!!

So good to see all of Adam Rupp's talents used in this song. He added his harmony part when he finished beatboxing. That (in this case) 6th part makes a huge difference. That may be what made it sound different to you. There is actually a documentary on Paramount+ about the 50th anniversary of the song that includes an extensive interview with Don McLean as well as clips of this video and clips from an interview with Tim. I'm not sure if that particular documentary is available where you live, but you could check.

Hey, since December is just around the corner, you really need to check out the Christmas Music. They did "Children go where I send thee" with Kenny Rogers, "Christmas in Dixie" with Alabama. Also, you really need to check out their version of O Holy Night , plus they have some originals such as Snow Globe. Check them out, you will not be disappointed!!
