  • ATC SCM40A speakers are very transparent and detailed sounding speakers. They can sound fantastic in acoustically deader rooms, but too hot in treble in more reverberant rooms.
The purpose of this video is to demonstrate the look and feel of ATC SCM40A speakers and not their sound. For an in-depth review and my thoughts on their sound, please visit my website: audionostalgia...

Any competition for the M40s ?

    • @AudioNostalgia

@@davidcarr2216 Very different speakers. SCM40A have a fairly dry bass and too much treble in my room for my taste. M40.1 have 'meatier' and more rounded bass, and perfect amount of high frequencies for my room and my taste. Thus for me, in this particular room, M40.1 would definitely be my preference. In a deader room, with wooden subfloor and carpets, perhaps my opinion would be different.

One of the speakers I am most curious about. Thank you for the video demonstration. Being a monitor company, not surprised about the treble comment.

Thank you for the feedback. Yes, definitely an interesting experience, although I wasn't as impressed with them I was hoping to be.
Can you get your hands on a set of ATCs in your part of the US?

This level of active atc speaker, has to have a very good quality preamp . You cannot compromise as you have very good active amplification and drive units that will only be able to perform with an excellent pre amp. Something like Restek editor, or pass labs is a minimum to deliver an uncompromised signal to the active amplification.

Based on the blind tests I've conducted, there is very little difference between well designed devices these days so it is rather hard for me to agree with your comment. I found that biggest differences people hear are due to biases during sighted tests, or due to incorrectly setup levels during testing, or due to comparing things from memory. There is actually a lot of scientific research that backs up how easy it is too fool our auditory perception. Anyway, each to their own. All the best, Shem.

@@AudioNostalgia i agree with a lot you said the whole Chi-fi audio scene is a testament to that , put a few peaked eq filters in the right places to fool the ear and dip the mid range so it has no liquidity or real character at all.
However you do pay for what you get with audio but only up to a point - then it goes to being just ridiculous like 8 grand for a cable. It turns into almost the art scene.
Who is realistically going to pay more than their DAC and other stuff combined for some cable that will sound almost identical to the 150 quid QED one that is basically just as well made as the 8k one ?

Pass labs preamp ( or anything by pass labs) have way too much distortion which these speakers will reveal.

YOU HAVE TO START AS THE BARE MINIMUM FOR ATC EFFORTLESS SOUND QUALITY WITH THE SCM100AS / 150ASL monitors. The ATC SCM40A does not represent the true sound quality of the ATC SCM ASL studio Monitor line sound quality levels. For a Start the ATC SCM40A is too unpowered for effortless sound, and has none of the SL ( SUPER LINEAR ) drive units which limit distortion levels to a lot lower levels . ATC 100ASL and 150ASL. is where the game starts to begin with a more effortless sound quality. ALSO AT THE VERY LEAST YOU SHOULD HAVE SOME SOUND ABSORPTION FROM SOUND REFLECTIONS OFF THE SIDE WALLS, REAR WALL, CEILING, AND DEFINITELY THE WALL WHERE THE SPEAKERS FIRE TO THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE ROOM. YOU SHOULD BY NOW NO BETTER, THAT YOU CANNOT JUST SHOVE ANY LOUDSPEAKERS INTO A ROOM AND EXPECT A GOOD SOUND RESULT. THE ATC40A's are no where near as capable to the same high quality sound level standards as is offered by their by their really big no compromise big mains monitors, added with their additional low frequency subs, that are in the best large recording studio's in the world . The 40A's only give a little hint of some of the ATC kind of sound, but they do not represent the true ATC top sound level sound quality as offered by their big and effortless ASL mains monitors .

    • @AudioNostalgia
      @AudioNostalgia  Před rokem +9

I take it by your passionate reply that either you own ATC speakers or you are big fan?
      Here's my feedback:
      1) I've listened to ATC SCM100ASL side by side to ATC SCM40A (same day, same room). Yes, the SCM100ASL are better, but it is not a night and day difference. These are incremental gains, but the speakers fundamentally present the same character.
      2) I do acknowledge that room plays a fundamental role in how a system will sound. However, 95% of people that buy HiFi use it in normal, untreated rooms. All loudspeakers I reviewed on my website have been evaluated in normal rooms, so I don't see why I should make any exceptions for ATC.
Moreover, there is academic research that suggests that our brains have the ability to 'hear through' the room, which indicates that even in the normal rooms, we should be able to distinguish 'good' from a 'bad' sound sources. Dr. Floyd Toole covers it very well in his book "Sound Reproduction: The Acoustics and Psychoacoustics of Loudspeakers and Rooms".

rubbish. stick the speakers right against each of the the back wall corners, they will sound absolute crap, including sound distortion happening from the sound bouncing off all bare walls to all over the place in the room, is not listenable through from your brains perspective. That theory does not hold water, that is absolute rubbish . There is a night and day difference between the 40a and 100ASL and 150ASL, again your talking rubbish. the clear clarity, dynamics, and sound stage and volume are on another level. You need to get your facts right and get your hearing and listening ability sorted out . You clearly should not be writing reviews when you have absolutely no clue and clearly don't know what you're talking about .

@@ianjohnhorwood2605 I think you need to go back to school before you start forcing your opinions onto others. You sound more like a religious fanatic rather than a sensible human being that one can have a discussion with.
You clearly did not learn this at school, so let me do this for you:
OPINIONS are not FACTS. Neither my listening impressions, nor your listening impressions are facts - they are just subjective opinions about how something sounds.
If you want to convert these OPINIONS to something that holds water, you need to apply scientific method. You’d need to conduct a double-blind listening test on a large number of participants in a controlled environment, and see whether the results of it are statistically significant.
Without that, it is just OPINIONS. And I seriously don’t get why it bothers you so much that my opinion is different to yours? Would it bother you if I preferred my car in red and you liked yours black?
