How To Improve Your Violin Sound

  • To achieve a lovely sound on the violin we have to devote plenty of time to discovering and familiarising ourselves with the properties of the bow and with the vibrations produced from the violin. Don't ignore or neglect the sound you are making, or become so used to it that you accept a poor sound full of bumps, scrapes and squeaks. A beautiful sound is achievable for every violinist with the right encouragement and knowledge. Let's explore it together...Mary V

    Hola Mary! Mil gracias Mary! 💜🎶💜🎻💚🐶🐕

      Hello Lola! Thank you very much for your observations...there's something powerful about getting back to the open strings, isn't there? A fantastic player once told me that he spent his whole first year at college playing open strings. Was he exaggerating - I just don't know, but he did have the most beautiful sound!
      Recently my violin has developed a really awful 'fuzzy' sound which disturbs me so much and I'll have to go to the luthier. It makes me feel that nothing is quite right unless that sound is there for me. Honestly, I'm quite spoiled and made helpless by my violin! Mary ❤

    Hi Mary, when doing vibrato how does one know where the thumb goes? Should the fleshy part under the thumbnail go under the neck to support the violin? Or can the part of the thumb between the base of the thumb where it meets the hand and the knuckle of the thumb go under the neck to support the neck of the violin? It looks like the thumb is sticking out like one is hitchhiking alongside the road

    • @violinstudiowithmaryv
      @violinstudiowithmaryv  Před 2 měsíci +3

      Hello! If I remember you've asked about this before? I feel you're slightly missing the reasons why the thumb would go in a certain place, because it's actually the different sizes of hands, fingers and thumbs that determines placement.
      The violin isn't supported by the thumb underneath the neck. Instead, the thumb is placed on one side of the neck and the side of the first finger is on the other.
      Crucially, how low or high our thumb is placed on the neck depends on the length of the fingers.
      I have small hands, so you can see my thumb is touching the neck close to the top, but with longer fingers the thumb is touching lower down nearer the base, so the thumb sticks up, which is fine. (Look at Perlman's huge hands and notice how his thumb sticks up...)
      So crucially, you can see that there is not one thumb position for everyone, but it's the size of hand and fingers that determines the comfort and position of the left thumb.
      Hold your left hand up and note the natural position of your thumb. That's actually the ideal position to adopt on the violin, with the thumb and side of the first finger on either side of the neck of your violin.
      Please look at this video to see the relative positions of the thumb and first finger;
      'The Easiest Way To Do Vibrato - And Keeping Your Hand Loose!'

      @@violinstudiowithmaryv Hi Mary, odds are I have asked before. My fingers are long. I am just struggling with this vibrato business. I will go over the video link you provided. Thanks for your help. God willing, it will not be in vain and one day I will play beautifully like you.
      By the way, I remember now that video you gave per the link and still have the wooden spoon next to my couch to practice using it.
      Do you have a trick to keep the finger from sliding on the string when going back and forth?

    • @violinstudiowithmaryv
      @violinstudiowithmaryv  Před 2 měsíci

      @@TNungesser Great to know you keep your wooden spoon handy! Settling a large hand into a comfortable position is a gradual thing and not the easiest simply because the hand has many more position options due to the long finger length.
      The 'trick' to stop the fingers slipping on the string while practicing vibrato is to let them slide on the string at first, then gradually press just enough on the string to stop the slipping while continuing to move the hand which in turn rolls the finger for vibrato...
      How would you like to send me a short video of your left hand in action to maryveronicaviolin@gmail.com
      so I could advise you properly? It would be so helpful to actually see your hand.
      Mary❤

      Do you think that statins , with their reputation for muscle side effects, affect many violin players? I am always tight and have trouble using the whole bow. Any experience with this?

      Hello! Congratulations and welcome to the wonderful world of the violin! Anyone can start at any age and most people who start as adult have a large advantage- desire. People have contacted me on my channel telling me they have taken up the violin in their 70's, 80's and even 90's, and are adoring their precious time with their violin.
      The most important aspects to concentrate on in the early stages are comfort when holding the violin, relaxed left hand and relaxed bow hold. If you decide to use a shoulder rest it should be fitted properly .
      We all pick up technique as we go along, but the fundamental and crucial issue of proceeding without pain and discomfort is the top priority and in fact, is the very best start we can make as it makes everything else possible for us.
      Please let me know if there's anything you'd like help with and I'd be delighted to help if I can.
      Mary❤

      Yes, it’s possible. I played the piano most of my life with an unrequited love for the violin that I gave up at 13 years old after twoI years of completely wasted lessons. I took it up during the pandemic because I found so many good tutorials on CZcams that showed me how to unlearn the lack of learning as a kid. I’m 67 now and very good friends with my beloved violin.
