Crows are smart goth pidgeons. Ravens are the corvids that have lured my dog away while their buddy led the bear in to open the trash up after the person with anti-bear measures left the property. They're not just thieves like crows, Ravens are machiavellian mob bosses.
I had a large community of crows as regular visitors. Their individual personalities, abilities to work together, and long term relationships, are wonderful to watch. I observed a Crow Funeral. Hours of respectful visits by a large display of flying, “condolences “. They leave gifts to those who feed them. I throughly enjoy them. Wish their sounds were more pleasing, however I can say that about a lot of things. I enjoy your respectful knowledge. Thank you.
Growing up in small town, rural America and being a hunter Ive been around crows for decades. They are great little animals and a joy to watch, as kids we would be amazed at how they could tell the difference between us walking with a stick or fishing pole vs carrying a gun, their eyesight must be phenomenal. I left my last job but still drive out there to feed the crows and as soon as they see my pickup truck they fly over to the pine trees ready for their treats, and one particular bird lands on the shed roof and caws at me loudly. I think its the fledgling that I found on the ground a year and a half ago but theres no way to prove that, but it sure is a tad friendlier than the others.
My husband noticed a crow watching him drinking a bottle of water last summer while he was at work. There were no water sources around, so he cut the bottle into a makeshift dish for the crow and offered it to the bird. The crow finished my husband's water and came back with friends lol.
I have always believed seeing crows is good luck. My understanding is that many first nations groups consider crows as good omens and often use them as clan tokens. In any case seeing crows puts a smile on my face.
This is the perfect video for me today. The other day we saw a vulture on my neighbors house! Then yesterday he was on my patio knocking over all my plants! Instead of being terrified I was delighted! I posted him on my Instagram and even left out some chicken. (He didn’t take it) I think he was a juvenile, he was clumsy, too friendly and still seem to have some downy around his head. I love your videos, such great storytelling. ❤
Ever since I learned about their face recognition and intelligence years ago, I've been taking walks with seeds/nuts in my pockets just in case I come across some crows. I want them to gossip about how okay I am for a human. It's important to me that they think I'm cool.
By no means have I yet to watch all of your videos but I think I'm going to have to say this one is my most favorite because of my deep love and adoration for the crow. I absolutely adore these birds. I have always seen them as characters and have never associated them with anything negative. I have 7 that visit me regularly and have for about 4 years now and I just adore them. I talk to them, caw at them. Let the neighbors think I'm nuts lol Thank you again for all of your videos on so many beautiful birds, especially the crow ❤️

One of the parks I help take care of has a pool. After we close for the summer we start to winterize it, usually we use wooden blocks to cover the skimmers. This year we went with foam backer rod which worked pretty well until they started coming out. One day my coworker caught the culprit the local crows apparently they just pull them out for fun.
I love crows, they are such amazing birds along with the other members in the Corvid family, Blue Jays Ravens and Magpies! I don't believe in these superstitious stories, they are just that, stories. Thank you Lesley for posting this wonderful video!

@@LesleytheBirdNerd here's an Attaboy for you: I'm a caregiver for disabled guys. One time one of them had a mental break & we pretty much lost him. We used to feed the jays & talk to them. Then he just broke one day. He'd stand on the back deck & stare at nothing, like his mind was lost. After some days of impossible work, we started getting him back. The cat helped, and the doctor was great, but I knew he had found his way back when he started focusing on the birds again. Now, he's better than before. We interact with nature all the time, in hugely positive ways. I was already a bird fan, and I already understood stuff like the UW crow research, so your part in this guy's story is pretty small. He has no idea you exist. However, if I made a big chart with everything that happened there in his mind, you have a part. And I bet a billion dollars my story isn't unique. So when you're sitting there, grinding through your own life, try to stay humble & realize that the Universe uses people like you, amplifying your good intentions to our collective benefit. Appreciated.
We have a family of crows that visits our yard daily. They have a circuit around the neighborhood of which houses put out food for them, which I think is kind of adorable. This morning there were three black vultures in the oak tree beside my house. Two flew off when I went outside, the third stuck around and watched me for a little while. He was honestly kind of majestic.
I saw the weirdest thing today. I fed the pigeons in the park as usual along a long sidewalk. Today, I saw a couple of crows hanging around and they would eventually get the peanuts I throw around for the squirrels. I went back inside and watched the action outside my window as I sat in my rocking chair and sipped coffee. The crows both found the peanuts and were just slowly walking around with them not doing much for a long time. The pigeons were being strange and kept flying off and they were late to the party. One of the crows flew away to hide their peanuts, and the other stay behind scanning the ground before it flew up into a nearby tree. I looked away for a second and when I looked back, the crow fly down from the tree to land on the sidewalk, but, the funny thing was the there was a smaller hawk right on the crow's tail. The crow landed. The hawk landed. It was no contest, the crow was so much bigger. But this didn't seem to deter the hawk. It mad a few feeble attempts to take out the crow. The crow did not overreact. It seemed annoyed, and seemed as confused as I was. The crow never flew away, it just hope back up into the tree. The hawk tried to take it out again. The crow merely flipped to another branch. The hawk gave up and flew away. Birdzzaroo. Weird. The hawks have become a regular thing. I feed ALL the birds. (not geese or ducks) Oh, and as for superstitions, I love Halloween, I ain't afraid of no ghosts. But superstitions are silly. There's lots of real stuff to be afraid of. Crows ain't one of them. Ravens on the other hand. Just kidding. I love ravens even more than I love crows. I miss them, not here in the south. Got Bald Eagles now though..... sorry, ranting.
Beautiful stories of crows from both First Nations and other hunters, especially when looking for lost people in the woods/mts. They have an amazing “spiritual” side (for lack of a better phrase) to them for sure. ❤
We used to get three crows in the backyard all the time and one day I looked it up on Google. Never realized that so many groups of people who crows as a spiritual sign and not a bad superstition.
I walk to work every morning. It takes just under an hour and various crow families and transients accompany me pretty much the whole way. Probably the peanuts, I guess. At home one will parade in front of a window to catch my attention for another peanut. Love these guys!

I had a crows nest in a maple tree next to my driveway this year. I loved watching them. And so funny, when I would pull in the driveway, they made no sound. But if a friend would pull in, the crows would caw loudly! Pretty good alert animals :)
Seeing 6 crows also doesn't necessarily mean physical death. Sometimes, it means "An old man/idea/soul" is passing away, and a new phase is beginning. It can literally signify a GOOD omen, that you are changing for the better. But in order for this change to occur, something HAS to die or pass away lol. It's not as cut and dry as superstitions like to make it.
My grandmother detested our Ravens (common around here) because of their mournful cry and association with death. Whereas I think they're beautiful and very clever animals. I'm always happy to see them.
As a boy I grew up in the woods in Arkansas I learned that crows are like news stations they tell you when there's bad people in the woods they tell you when there's bad weather on the way and the only thing I ever heard was if a crow pics on your window there might be somebody die but that's the only thing I heard like that the rest of the time they always help me look out for danger thanks for your video on a crows they really are cool
After every Thanksgiving I give our crows the turkey carcass to pick on in the field behind our home. It's almost like they expect it and set their internal calendar! Lol
Superstitions seem to be derived from Skinner box type behavior. Pattern seeking humans with an inability; or unwillingness to rationalize misfortune. It’s especially sad when the pique of ignorance is unfairly directed at poor animals.
I've been feeding birds over 40 years now. This past summer is the first time I've seen crows at my feeder. They've been coming all summer and they are still here. There's probably 4 or 5 that show up regularly. They like to take peanuts and dunk them in the birdbath. I have heard them on the roof pounding the peanut to open it. I have really been enjoying their visits. But I do wonder why they are showing up in my yard now.
Since I was a little boy (I’m now 73) crows have escorted me whenever I’m outdoors. A whole murder of crows lives out back up in the live oaks. All these years, form time to time, they would drop one of their feathers on me, which I would pick up & take home, or sometimes fasten to my cap. They often greet me & seem to appreciate when I pause to greet them in return. Years ago, I was faculty sponsor for our college’s Native American, intertribal student council. When I shared my crow experiences with them, they informed me that the crow was my ‘skywatcher,’ something like a guardian angel. One of the students, from the Cree Nation up north, got together with the others & gifted me with a Native name, ‘Two Crows.’
I have been putting out food for a bonded couple and an adultescent for several months. They at first flew away in alarm when I would stepped out of the house. But then they would do "fly overs" to check me out. Now, we caw back and forth: a crow will caw 2 to 5 times and I will mimic as best as I can (I count on my fingers the number) -- and then during a pause, I will do a single caw -- and I will receive a single caw back! We are talking!!! I love my crows!!! They have left a couple gifts for me on the patio,
This was a funny one! So many superstitions around them. I love the food offering. Do you have any ravens around? I like them because they're so big! I usually have one that stops by every time I throw food scraps out (or any mice I caught!) sometimes his mate is with him. They come around more in the winter and are starting to come around more now that it's fall, sometimes they'll hang around all day when it's snowing.
I have been feeding a group of crows for over a year. The visit twice a day at 7 AM and in the afternoon around 4 PM. There are usually six but sometimes more. They make my day.
I subscribe to the Welsh theory. Anyway, the worst a crow can do to you is 1) pranking you if you're alive 2) eating you if you're dead! Thanks for this great video.
I absolutely love your sense of humor. I did have a crow I named Cameron that would come around and I'd give him peanuts. Cameron would bring me gifts. I have about 6 or 7 small jagged rocks he would leave by my door. I love crows

Lesley--I love my Crows I had a family that would call to me when they would see me and want peanuts...once I had left over Chicken Parmesan from a restaurant and cut it up and put it in the grass ...they came over and looked for a few minutes then devoured it...sad to say I dont know what happened to them....we have some new ones and one has learned how to hang on the peanut feeder upside down and pull out peanuts....just one can do it...just saw a Snowbird (Junco) yesterday...love these old Crow tales ....not scared we love em....stay safe God Bless my friend and thanks for a beautiful break from the real world
Years ago I watched this documentary on PBS. The Crow they were filming picked up the walnut from the picnic table, flew to a nearby wire that was located above the road, then purposely dropped the walnut in the street. The Crow then waited till a car drove by....CRUNCH! (success!!)...picked up the pieces and flew away. 😆 Thx Lesley for talking about Crows, they really are quite special.
When I lived in the mountains of the 80439, our property was a Crow haven. They dove, flipped, banked, and climbed in the air currents, learned to bathe and drink in our clean, fresh bird baths. Parents taught young how to forage and hunt. Crows and Ravens ran around on our roofs. I learned to make their caw sounds, and many days we joined in the 'Caw Lay Lew Yah' chorus. I ❤ Corvids.
I befriended a local grey hooded crow couple 3 or 4 years ago and they've been a constant beam of light in my life. Especially working every day in a home office it's nice to see them hop on my window sill and if I'm too busy to notice, they just knock softly on the window and then I take a break to watch them snack for a few minutes. Really helped with my mental health.
I had a murder of fish crows, well over 100, following me around on a kayak paddle in Perdido bay up near the mouth of the river this year, and I felt very privileged since they tend to be extremely weary of human folk. I think there where so may of them, I just happened to be a mere curiosity, who just happed to wander into their late summer gathering. They where not at all distressed, just watched me above in the trees, conversing with each other.
UFFDAH! I didn't grow up with any crow superstitions, but did grow up hearing that they were mean. But now we have a crow or two that visit us every day (in our oak tree). They "talk" to us & we talk back. We love them! And wow , that's a LOT of crow superstitions!!!

I love crows❤. They are such characters. So many birds in my north Texas town have disappeared. I don’t get see a crow but once in a blue moon 😢. The skies are empty almost always. I get some doves a handful of sparrows and occasionally a woodpecker at my feeder and suet. Once in a while maybe a different species thrown in. Very lonely outside without birds everywhere.
Nicely done! I do think that SOME of the superstitions about crows come from observing behaviors then some incident happens - correlation, not causation, but ancient folks didn't always know that. Fortunately for me the only "myth" I grew up with regarding crows - variations on Aesop's fable. The real story involves a Raven of course, but I heard versions of it from family where they just said a crow or a blackbird. And I very much remember seeing them around the barn during the short time I lived in the Catskill mountains. They were getting the mice, a good thing for us! (No cats, on that farm, just dogs.) And I remember hearing a story from an older woman (I think she was Navajo) about how crows were spirit guides for some folks. I'm glad I was lucky and heard all the really GOOD stories first, and only learned the "bad luck" stories later in life when I wouldn't take them as seriously!

I actually psychically requested crows to come to my yard. I was soon rewarded, or so I thought. They were actually grackles, whom are equally welcome in my yard, cuz they're so beautiful . But a few enormous crows/ravens, I don't know the difference, like to hang out above my yard and make comments. They are welcome to come down anytime. In fact, I would like to turn them against my enemies. Sadly, I don't have any enemies. I don't believe in the "psychic", but then again, I don't exactly disbelieve. Your videos are wonderful, and getting better all the time. Keep going!
I love corvids 🖤 in general. My experiences with them have been beautiful, mysterious and scary (premonition). Whenever I live amongst them, my family and I feed them. They're very grateful eaters. But then again, they receive home cooked gourmet food such as homestyle pancakes 🥞, old (but not spoiled) seafood 🦞, spaghetti 🍝 (a crow favorite), and fresh baked cookies 🍪. But they've warned us of impending danger and near death 💀. Before my near death, I saw a dead crow and said a prayer 🙏🏼 for it. Later on, I saw two ravens before I almost died. However, I don't vilify them. They're just birds, not exorcisers worshipping the devil. I see them as messengers of a darker truth that must be dealt with. Also, they are a sign of deep transformation and change in one's circumstances. The superstitions of yesteryear can be given a more positive twist without demeaning such an intelligent and creative bird.
I love crows and I think I wrote this once under one of your videos but in Bulgaria crows were so wise that they could warn humans of bad things happening. They were also the messengers from the otherworld, they also accompanied the human soul after death. But they didn't think that if you see the birds once there's something, Bulgarians stared getting nervous when they saw them often 😆. So here's a little description of the most common beliefs of what signs crows were giving : - one crow on top of the house is a warning to be careful with the house - a silent crow on a height is luck, success coming or for those who were not yet married - love was coming - a crow IN the house is death to one of the inhabitants
Crows are beautiful! You know what's bad? When the neighbors cut down the trees that have been growing in their yard for hundreds of years leaving the crows nowhere to go. That's bad. What's good is I still continue to feed my family of crows on the fence around the parking lot of my apt. building.

When I returned home today after being gone for two weeks one of the local Crows perched near by and certainly was talking to me. I think she said "welcome home." I think there are more animals and birds smarter then us smart humans think.
Didn’t know that Apollo was the Greek god of Crows. Learn something new every day. 😄 I, too, like the superstition of warning against killing a Crow, and unlike the other superstitions, seems to be rooted in some truth. Crows can be very vocal if they see one of their own killed, and they even have funerals for their dead, so it kinda makes sense. I also like the Welsh superstition of favorable things happening if you see a trio, couple or quartet of Crows. According to AncestryDNA, I have some distant Welsh heritage (about 4% from Wales 🏴), so it’s nice to hear that I descend from a culture that favored Crows somewhat. Crows are my favorites. My husband knew how sad it makes me that our local murder doesn't visit my backyard feeders so he bought me some prints from a local photographer.
I regularly exercise-walk 3-4 miles, passing a huge pond where a mating pair of white Muted Swans live. I always bring a small baggie of swan food kibbles from Amazon, tossing it in the water. At some point, a murder of Crows began harassing the swans for the food floating on the water. I began to bring 'extra' food and placing it on post stumps for the crows. They absolutely love the food and now leave the swans alone, waiting for me to give them their share. They all seem to recognize me now, wherever my walks take me. I'm never harassed, but they all CAWW to me and fly just ahead of me. While the swans still enjoy getting some healthy waterfowl feed, the crows really seem to really enjoy it. They all take turns flying in to eat some and stare at me while eating. It makes my walks quite interesting.
We have had a flock/family/murder of crows in our back tree for 20 plus years. They are always having a good time, screwing with each other, having meetings in the top of the trees, etc. Sometimes the come down and have some peanuts with all the other birds at our feeders. We did have a sick crow this summer. He did die. I disposed of him, and as I expected, his/her mate or family member came that afternoon to look around d the spot where the formerly alive crow expired. It was neat! Today we had a red breastfed nuthatch for the first time! Migrating I suppose. We are in on the siuth side of the Mpls./St.Paul metro area. Always enjoy your videos!!! Thank you!!!

Don't understand why anyone would feel negative about crows. They are intelligent, and love to play. An uncle once found and adopted a baby crow. The crow decided to stay with him and would often be perched on his shoulder. The crow would sometimes get into mischief, pulling clothespins off of laundry drying on the line, for instance.

A thing I find interesting about the “death” part is often interpreted literally, but it can also refer to “the end” of something like a certain point in life and, like you said, a change, either good or bad, is coming.
I love crows. Back when I had my free range chickens, I would always put out a large bowl of tiny bite size dog food. The crows loved it and they would hang around all day long. I did it because I lived in a wooded area and the Hawks were always after my chickens. The crows were territorial and they would harrass the hawks and give away their hiding places 😁 They earned their dog food. I put it up high because the chickens would try to eat it too 🤦♂️ I studied crows back then ... They are probably the smartest of all animals. I was always trying to make personal friends with them. Some trusted me and some didn't. They can recognize humans and they can use tool's
Excellent! I like that idea of seeing 3 Crows as something fortunate - lines up with the regular trio I share peanuts with on my local hikes every weekend. The first one to spot me in the morning will start cawing and alert the other two. "Peanut human is here!" I have a bunch of crows down here in Florida, and I feed them peanuts every morning. Sometimes I need to call them with 2 'caws", and boy, do they know what that means. i like them, they're my outdoor pets, kinda. :)

a few weeks ago, one of the crows in the family that hangs out around my apartment building made a "woo" sound... i've never heard that before. it sounded like "woo woo woo woo woo-ah", it was so neat 😊 does anyone know what it means?
Maybe it was a Crow that was raised by humans and was now released into the wild, and was imitating a sound that that person made. I’ve heard a Crow in a wildlife refuge/sanctuary center make those same exact sounds. 😄
I love watching the small murder of crows that visit my backyard usually once a day or so. There was just 3 last year but now there's 5 of them that stick together. I love seeing how they coordinate as well. There's always one that stays in the trees while the others forage in the yard as a look out
I love crows. I was very interested in how the native people of North America viewed them and of all the tribes listed only 1, possibly 2 of them viewed crows as harbingers of darkness/evil/bad luck/whatever. The others, which included quite a diverse number of tribes paid homage to their wisdom, intelligence, cleverness and other beneficial attributes. I was always wishing my spirit animal would turn out to be a crow or raven, alas that never happens whenever I fill out those questionaires ;)

I think its the fledgling that I found on the ground a year and a half ago but theres no way to prove that, but it sure is a tad friendlier than the others.

My husband noticed a crow watching him drinking a bottle of water last summer while he was at work. There were no water sources around, so he cut the bottle into a makeshift dish for the crow and offered it to the bird. The crow finished my husband's water and came back with friends lol.
I have always believed seeing crows is good luck. My understanding is that many first nations groups consider crows as good omens and often use them as clan tokens.
In any case seeing crows puts a smile on my face.

This is the perfect video for me today. The other day we saw a vulture on my neighbors house! Then yesterday he was on my patio knocking over all my plants! Instead of being terrified I was delighted! I posted him on my Instagram and even left out some chicken. (He didn’t take it) I think he was a juvenile, he was clumsy, too friendly and still seem to have some downy around his head. I love your videos, such great storytelling. ❤
Ever since I learned about their face recognition and intelligence years ago, I've been taking walks with seeds/nuts in my pockets just in case I come across some crows. I want them to gossip about how okay I am for a human. It's important to me that they think I'm cool.
By no means have I yet to watch all of your videos but I think I'm going to have to say this one is my most favorite because of my deep love and adoration for the crow. I absolutely adore these birds. I have always seen them as characters and have never associated them with anything negative. I have 7 that visit me regularly and have for about 4 years now and I just adore them. I talk to them, caw at them. Let the neighbors think I'm nuts lol Thank you again for all of your videos on so many beautiful birds, especially the crow ❤️

Do they reply when you talk to them? I have tried to get a response, but mostly I just get told to go away.
I talked to my Crows too and they respond.
One of the parks I help take care of has a pool. After we close for the summer we start to winterize it, usually we use wooden blocks to cover the skimmers. This year we went with foam backer rod which worked pretty well until they started coming out. One day my coworker caught the culprit the local crows apparently they just pull them out for fun.
Crows are soul guides here and in the afterlife, treat them well and they will guide your way.
My family of crows are my alarm clock 😂 they come every morning at dawn for peanuts and I love it 🥰

I'm a caregiver for disabled guys. One time one of them had a mental break & we pretty much lost him. We used to feed the jays & talk to them. Then he just broke one day. He'd stand on the back deck & stare at nothing, like his mind was lost. After some days of impossible work, we started getting him back. The cat helped, and the doctor was great, but I knew he had found his way back when he started focusing on the birds again. Now, he's better than before. We interact with nature all the time, in hugely positive ways.
I was already a bird fan, and I already understood stuff like the UW crow research, so your part in this guy's story is pretty small. He has no idea you exist. However, if I made a big chart with everything that happened there in his mind, you have a part. And I bet a billion dollars my story isn't unique. So when you're sitting there, grinding through your own life, try to stay humble & realize that the Universe uses people like you, amplifying your good intentions to our collective benefit. Appreciated.

We have a family of crows that visits our yard daily. They have a circuit around the neighborhood of which houses put out food for them, which I think is kind of adorable. This morning there were three black vultures in the oak tree beside my house. Two flew off when I went outside, the third stuck around and watched me for a little while. He was honestly kind of majestic.
I saw the weirdest thing today. I fed the pigeons in the park as usual along a long sidewalk. Today, I saw a couple of crows hanging around and they would eventually get the peanuts I throw around for the squirrels. I went back inside and watched the action outside my window as I sat in my rocking chair and sipped coffee. The crows both found the peanuts and were just slowly walking around with them not doing much for a long time. The pigeons were being strange and kept flying off and they were late to the party. One of the crows flew away to hide their peanuts, and the other stay behind scanning the ground before it flew up into a nearby tree. I looked away for a second and when I looked back, the crow fly down from the tree to land on the sidewalk, but, the funny thing was the there was a smaller hawk right on the crow's tail. The crow landed. The hawk landed. It was no contest, the crow was so much bigger. But this didn't seem to deter the hawk. It mad a few feeble attempts to take out the crow. The crow did not overreact. It seemed annoyed, and seemed as confused as I was. The crow never flew away, it just hope back up into the tree. The hawk tried to take it out again. The crow merely flipped to another branch. The hawk gave up and flew away. Birdzzaroo. Weird. The hawks have become a regular thing. I feed ALL the birds. (not geese or ducks) Oh, and as for superstitions, I love Halloween, I ain't afraid of no ghosts. But superstitions are silly. There's lots of real stuff to be afraid of. Crows ain't one of them. Ravens on the other hand. Just kidding. I love ravens even more than I love crows. I miss them, not here in the south. Got Bald Eagles now though..... sorry, ranting.
One good thing about crows. When telling someone about distance to somewhere, it is always a shorter distance "as a crow flies".
Crows and Ravens are some of my favorite birds, everytime I see or hear one I smile. Indeed, they do have magical powers.

We used to get three crows in the backyard all the time and one day I looked it up on Google. Never realized that so many groups of people who crows as a spiritual sign and not a bad superstition.

I walk to work every morning. It takes just under an hour and various crow families and transients accompany me pretty much the whole way. Probably the peanuts, I guess. At home one will parade in front of a window to catch my attention for another peanut. Love these guys!

I had a crows nest in a maple tree next to my driveway this year. I loved watching them. And so funny, when I would pull in the driveway, they made no sound. But if a friend would pull in, the crows would caw loudly! Pretty good alert animals :)
Seeing 6 crows also doesn't necessarily mean physical death. Sometimes, it means "An old man/idea/soul" is passing away, and a new phase is beginning. It can literally signify a GOOD omen, that you are changing for the better. But in order for this change to occur, something HAS to die or pass away lol. It's not as cut and dry as superstitions like to make it.
My grandmother detested our Ravens (common around here) because of their mournful cry and association with death. Whereas I think they're beautiful and very clever animals. I'm always happy to see them.
As a boy I grew up in the woods in Arkansas I learned that crows are like news stations they tell you when there's bad people in the woods they tell you when there's bad weather on the way and the only thing I ever heard was if a crow pics on your window there might be somebody die but that's the only thing I heard like that the rest of the time they always help me look out for danger thanks for your video on a crows they really are cool

My grandpa saw a crow hanging around and he died 10 years later so yeah.
After every Thanksgiving I give our crows the turkey carcass to pick on in the field behind our home. It's almost like they expect it and set their internal calendar! Lol

Superstitions seem to be derived from Skinner box type behavior. Pattern seeking humans with an inability; or unwillingness to rationalize misfortune. It’s especially sad when the pique of ignorance is unfairly directed at poor animals.

As winter nears the flock has started flying from one side of my city to the next on a daily basis. I love watching this, there are so many.

I've been feeding birds over 40 years now. This past summer is the first time I've seen crows at my feeder. They've been coming all summer and they are still here. There's probably 4 or 5 that show up regularly. They like to take peanuts and dunk them in the birdbath. I have heard them on the roof pounding the peanut to open it. I have really been enjoying their visits. But I do wonder why they are showing up in my yard now.
I see one every morning
Since I was a little boy (I’m now 73) crows have escorted me whenever I’m outdoors. A whole murder of crows lives out back up in the live oaks. All these years, form time to time, they would drop one of their feathers on me, which I would pick up & take home, or sometimes fasten to my cap. They often greet me & seem to appreciate when I pause to greet them in return. Years ago, I was faculty sponsor for our college’s Native American, intertribal student council. When I shared my crow experiences with them, they informed me that the crow was my ‘skywatcher,’ something like a guardian angel. One of the students, from the Cree Nation up north, got together with the others & gifted me with a Native name, ‘Two Crows.’
I have been putting out food for a bonded couple and an adultescent for several months. They at first flew away in alarm when I would stepped out of the house. But then they would do "fly overs" to check me out. Now, we caw back and forth: a crow will caw 2 to 5 times and I will mimic as best as I can (I count on my fingers the number) -- and then during a pause, I will do a single caw -- and I will receive a single caw back! We are talking!!! I love my crows!!! They have left a couple gifts for me on the patio,

Do you have any ravens around? I like them because they're so big! I usually have one that stops by every time I throw food scraps out (or any mice I caught!) sometimes his mate is with him. They come around more in the winter and are starting to come around more now that it's fall, sometimes they'll hang around all day when it's snowing.

I have been feeding a group of crows for over a year. The visit twice a day at 7 AM and in the afternoon around 4 PM. There are usually six but sometimes more. They make my day.

Lesley--I love my Crows I had a family that would call to me when they would see me and want peanuts...once I had left over Chicken Parmesan from a restaurant and cut it up and put it in the grass ...they came over and looked for a few minutes then devoured it...sad to say I dont know what happened to them....we have some new ones and one has learned how to hang on the peanut feeder upside down and pull out peanuts....just one can do it...just saw a Snowbird (Junco) yesterday...love these old Crow tales ....not scared we love em....stay safe God Bless my friend and thanks for a beautiful break from the real world
Years ago I watched this documentary on PBS. The Crow they were filming picked up the walnut from the picnic table, flew to a nearby wire that was located above the road, then purposely dropped the walnut in the street. The Crow then waited till a car drove by....CRUNCH! (success!!)...picked up the pieces and flew away. 😆 Thx Lesley for talking about Crows, they really are quite special.

Crow's have been a symbol of good luck to me since the 1980's! They are by far my favorite Bird of all!
When I lived in the mountains of the 80439, our property was a Crow haven. They dove, flipped, banked, and climbed in the air currents, learned to bathe and drink in our clean, fresh bird baths. Parents taught young how to forage and hunt. Crows and Ravens ran around on our roofs. I learned to make their caw sounds, and many days we joined in the 'Caw Lay Lew Yah' chorus. I ❤ Corvids.

I befriended a local grey hooded crow couple 3 or 4 years ago and they've been a constant beam of light in my life. Especially working every day in a home office it's nice to see them hop on my window sill and if I'm too busy to notice, they just knock softly on the window and then I take a break to watch them snack for a few minutes. Really helped with my mental health.

I had a murder of fish crows, well over 100, following me around on a kayak paddle in Perdido bay up near the mouth of the river this year, and I felt very privileged since they tend to be extremely weary of human folk. I think there where so may of them, I just happened to be a mere curiosity, who just happed to wander into their late summer gathering. They where not at all distressed, just watched me above in the trees, conversing with each other.

I didn't grow up with any crow superstitions, but did grow up hearing that they were mean. But now we have a crow or two that visit us every day (in our oak tree). They "talk" to us & we talk back. We love them!

I love crows❤. They are such characters. So many birds in my north Texas town have disappeared. I don’t get see a crow but once in a blue moon 😢. The skies are empty almost always. I get some doves a handful of sparrows and occasionally a woodpecker at my feeder and suet. Once in a while maybe a different species thrown in. Very lonely outside without birds everywhere.

I do think that SOME of the superstitions about crows come from observing behaviors then some incident happens - correlation, not causation, but ancient folks didn't always know that.
Fortunately for me the only "myth" I grew up with regarding crows - variations on Aesop's fable. The real story involves a Raven of course, but I heard versions of it from family where they just said a crow or a blackbird. And I very much remember seeing them around the barn during the short time I lived in the Catskill mountains. They were getting the mice, a good thing for us! (No cats, on that farm, just dogs.) And I remember hearing a story from an older woman (I think she was Navajo) about how crows were spirit guides for some folks. I'm glad I was lucky and heard all the really GOOD stories first, and only learned the "bad luck" stories later in life when I wouldn't take them as seriously!

I just started backyard-birding in spring of 2022. I actually psychically requested crows to come to my yard. I was soon rewarded, or so I thought. They were actually grackles, whom are equally welcome in my yard, cuz they're so beautiful . But a few enormous crows/ravens, I don't know the difference, like to hang out above my yard and make comments. They are welcome to come down anytime. In fact, I would like to turn them against my enemies. Sadly, I don't have any enemies.
I don't believe in the "psychic", but then again, I don't exactly disbelieve.

Never thought of crows or ravens as anything but black birds. Fine birds.
I love corvids 🖤 in general. My experiences with them have been beautiful, mysterious and scary (premonition). Whenever I live amongst them, my family and I feed them. They're very grateful eaters. But then again, they receive home cooked gourmet food such as homestyle pancakes 🥞, old (but not spoiled) seafood 🦞, spaghetti 🍝 (a crow favorite), and fresh baked cookies 🍪.
But they've warned us of impending danger and near death 💀. Before my near death, I saw a dead crow and said a prayer 🙏🏼 for it. Later on, I saw two ravens before I almost died.
However, I don't vilify them. They're just birds, not exorcisers worshipping the devil. I see them as messengers of a darker truth that must be dealt with. Also, they are a sign of deep transformation and change in one's circumstances.
The superstitions of yesteryear can be given a more positive twist without demeaning such an intelligent and creative bird.

I love crows and I think I wrote this once under one of your videos but in Bulgaria crows were so wise that they could warn humans of bad things happening. They were also the messengers from the otherworld, they also accompanied the human soul after death. But they didn't think that if you see the birds once there's something, Bulgarians stared getting nervous when they saw them often 😆. So here's a little description of the most common beliefs of what signs crows were giving :
- one crow on top of the house is a warning to be careful with the house
- a silent crow on a height is luck, success coming or for those who were not yet married - love was coming
- a crow IN the house is death to one of the inhabitants

When I returned home today after being gone for two weeks one of the local Crows perched near by and certainly was talking to me. I think she said "welcome home." I think there are more animals and birds smarter then us smart humans think.

Didn’t know that Apollo was the Greek god of Crows. Learn something new every day. 😄 I, too, like the superstition of warning against killing a Crow, and unlike the other superstitions, seems to be rooted in some truth. Crows can be very vocal if they see one of their own killed, and they even have funerals for their dead, so it kinda makes sense. I also like the Welsh superstition of favorable things happening if you see a trio, couple or quartet of Crows. According to AncestryDNA, I have some distant Welsh heritage (about 4% from Wales 🏴), so it’s nice to hear that I descend from a culture that favored Crows somewhat. Crows are my favorites. My husband knew how sad it makes me that our local murder doesn't visit my backyard feeders so he bought me some prints from a local photographer.
I regularly exercise-walk 3-4 miles, passing a huge pond where a mating pair of white Muted Swans live. I always bring a small baggie of swan food kibbles from Amazon, tossing it in the water. At some point, a murder of Crows began harassing the swans for the food floating on the water. I began to bring 'extra' food and placing it on post stumps for the crows. They absolutely love the food and now leave the swans alone, waiting for me to give them their share. They all seem to recognize me now, wherever my walks take me. I'm never harassed, but they all CAWW to me and fly just ahead of me. While the swans still enjoy getting some healthy waterfowl feed, the crows really seem to really enjoy it. They all take turns flying in to eat some and stare at me while eating. It makes my walks quite interesting.
We have had a flock/family/murder of crows in our back tree for 20 plus years. They are always having a good time, screwing with each other, having meetings in the top of the trees, etc.
Sometimes the come down and have some peanuts with all the other birds at our feeders.
We did have a sick crow this summer. He did die. I disposed of him, and as I expected, his/her mate or family member came that afternoon to look around d the spot where the formerly alive crow expired.
It was neat!
Today we had a red breastfed nuthatch for the first time!
Migrating I suppose.

Don't understand why anyone would feel negative about crows. They are intelligent, and love to play. An uncle once found and adopted a baby crow. The crow decided to stay with him and would often be perched on his shoulder. The crow would sometimes get into mischief, pulling clothespins off of laundry drying on the line, for instance.

A thing I find interesting about the “death” part is often interpreted literally, but it can also refer to “the end” of something like a certain point in life and, like you said, a change, either good or bad, is coming.
I love crows. Back when I had my free range chickens, I would always put out a large bowl of tiny bite size dog food. The crows loved it and they would hang around all day long. I did it because I lived in a wooded area and the Hawks were always after my chickens. The crows were territorial and they would harrass the hawks and give away their hiding places 😁
They earned their dog food. I put it up high because the chickens would try to eat it too 🤦♂️
I studied crows back then ... They are probably the smartest of all animals. I was always trying to make personal friends with them. Some trusted me and some didn't. They can recognize humans and they can use tool's
Excellent! I like that idea of seeing 3 Crows as something fortunate - lines up with the regular trio I share peanuts with on my local hikes every weekend. The first one to spot me in the morning will start cawing and alert the other two. "Peanut human is here!" I have a bunch of crows down here in Florida, and I feed them peanuts every morning. Sometimes I need to call them with 2 'caws", and boy, do they know what that means. i like them, they're my outdoor pets, kinda. :)

I love watching the wildlife around my house birds, squirrels, chipmunks mainly (I’m slowly making friends w them all) and your channel name gave me a good idea…..Leslie the bird nerd…..I’m going to be Amy the squirrel girl lol 😊❤️🐿❤️🦉❤️ Also I use to care for a permanently injured crow that had to stay at the wildlife rehab I worked at due to a mangeled foot and not being able to use it but he was amazing!! He would help us and hang out w us and play w his favorite toys…..crows are actually amazing!!
I'm glad you found my channel. :) I think that is a cute name, "Amy the Squirrel girl" too adorable! The crow you mentioned, wow, what a wonderful bird. I always have wondered what the experience would be like to actually live with one in my home. They are such social creatures with a high level of intelligence.
@@LesleytheBirdNerd I didn’t live w him. I worked at the humane society wildlife rehab w him. Still an awesome experience that I’ll never forget and I’ve adored crows ever since……thank you for responding 😊❤️🐿❤️🦉it would be awesome to have one that was around everyday……I know that would mean something bad happened to it, so I’m not wishing for it but I totally get it lol
Had no idea about all these superstitions about crows, I did get a good laugh at some of them. I did hear they are very smart though.

a few weeks ago, one of the crows in the family that hangs out around my apartment building made a "woo" sound... i've never heard that before. it sounded like "woo woo woo woo woo-ah", it was so neat 😊
does anyone know what it means?
Maybe it was a Crow that was raised by humans and was now released into the wild, and was imitating a sound that that person made. I’ve heard a Crow in a wildlife refuge/sanctuary center make those same exact sounds. 😄

I love watching the small murder of crows that visit my backyard usually once a day or so. There was just 3 last year but now there's 5 of them that stick together. I love seeing how they coordinate as well. There's always one that stays in the trees while the others forage in the yard as a look out
I love crows. I was very interested in how the native people of North America viewed them and of all the tribes listed only 1, possibly 2 of them viewed crows as harbingers of darkness/evil/bad luck/whatever. The others, which included quite a diverse number of tribes paid homage to their wisdom, intelligence, cleverness and other beneficial attributes. I was always wishing my spirit animal would turn out to be a crow or raven, alas that never happens whenever I fill out those questionaires ;)
