- "Beyond the Danube," alternatively titled "Cossacks in Exile," stands as a Ukrainian comic opera composed by Semen Hulak-Artemovsky (1813-1873). Structured with spoken dialogue, the opera unfolds across three acts, narrating the tales of the Cossacks residing in the Danubian Sich.
The narrative unfolds against the backdrop of a historical incident: during the Russian army's conquest of the Zaporizhian Sich, the Zaporizhian Cossacks, along with their families, sought refuge across the Danube River in what is now Romania, within the Ottoman Empire's borders, establishing the Danube Sich.
The comedic elements stem from the Cossack clan's endeavors to adapt to their unfamiliar surroundings and from the peculiar actions of an infatuated Turkish Sultan. The storyline revolves around the fortuitous encounter between Ivan Karas, an elderly Dnieper Cossack, and the Turkish Sultan traveling incognito. This encounter leads to the granting of permission for all the "Cossacks beyond the Danube" to relocate to Imperial Russian territory, back in Ukraine.
