Johnny vs. Super Mario Galaxy 2

  • Looks like Nintendo really enjoyed the Space motif last time, so they're doing it again. How does this game manage to make a name for itself after the successful predecessor? You'd be surprised. Mario is orbiting the Nintendo Wii one last time with Super Mario Galaxy 2!

      @@codezero7981 it's just basically a better version of galaxy 1 as a whole, even with the abridged story, the gameplay is meatier, more powerups, more useful and interesting powerups, gameplay that is way more streamlined and in a more comfortable and less tight space. The levels in a galaxy are trying emphasize linearity in the missions but I personally find galaxy 2 way better at doing nonlinearity in the stages themselves

    This review alone just shows why Johnny's one of my favorite video game reviewers on the internet. He goes in depth with the gameplay, points out the positives & the negatives that those games have & doesn't automatically assume it's a copy/paste game just because of its presentation or thinks it's a terrible game just because of lack of story. I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one that sees what Galaxy 2 had to offer & sees it as a fantastic Mario game.

    I had a lot of fun with Super Mario Galaxy 2. I LOVE the addition to use Yoshi. The platforming was top notch, and the addition of the Grandstar Galaxy is one of my favorite additions to the Mario series. I just wish all of the stages didn't feel so linear. I know Super Mario Galaxy had it's share of linear gameplay, but it's so much more apparent in Super Mario Galaxy 2. I didn't enjoy it MORE than Galaxy 1, but it's still highly rated.

    13:24 - This. This right here. Truer words could've never been said. If just about everyone was as open-minded as you were Johnny, the gaming world would be a better place. That's also like saying is which Banjo-Kazooie game is the better one? Does it really matter? They're both the same game, and equally as fun. Most sequels nowadays tend to screw things up by not staying true to its predecessor, or try too hard to surpass it *cough*FinalFantasy*cough*.
    Games like the Galaxy series tend to throw that problem out of the problem like an overdue rent (?). I guess what I'm trying to say is, both Galaxy games are equally great in their own unique ways. Galaxy 1 has it's presentation and Rosalina's backstory, while Galaxy 2 provides much more challenge and replay value.
    Galaxy 2 is a similar to its predecessor gameplay and visual-wise, but it's different enough with some newly and well-designed levels. This statement can be said to any sequel that stays true to its original titles. Banjo-Kazooie, Pikmin, Bayonetta, etc.

      +Pit I agree but I think they're unique from each other for a different reason. Galaxy 1 and Galaxy 2 have their own unique style of levels. Levels such as Space Junk Galaxy, Toy Time Galaxy, and Melty Molten Galaxy follow their own styles like Puzzle Plank Galaxy, Cosmic Cove Galaxy, and Clockwork Ruins Galaxy. Jus thaving many different levels is enough to make the game feel fresh and unique.

    Super Mario Galaxy 2 compares very well to Galaxy 1. I personally hold them to be about equal in terms of quality. While it does feel more like an expansion pack than an entirely new experience, I feel like it adds enough to the table. What I don't like is that it isn't as much of an "experience", if that makes sense. A lack of Rosalina as a main part and the complete memory wipe of the original game are disappointing. Some of the green stars are a bit jerkish as well. And while I do prefer the Cosmic Observatory to the Faceship (I also like the hub world in 1 more than the world map in 2), it's a fairly minor gripe.
    I would continue, but you've already done a fantastic job with this review Johnny.

It's just capitalism (which is a good thing when there isn't a monopoly), though I will say that many of their practices are stupid and need reform. Btw, good news! Amazon bought Twitch instead, which means more competition (no Google monopoly).
      And, yes, people who engage in fads just for attention and to make themselves look cool are idiots. Hopefully they'll grow out of it. The world has been, is, and always will be filled with stupidity. Just don't let those people affect you by compromising your own positivity. Otherwise, they've won.

My main problem with Google owning YT is the copyright detection system. I'm against violating copyright, but the system screws over those who are using content under fair use as well.

    You know, SomecallmeJohnny, if I had to assume a reason as to why the power-ups are more situational is the structure of the 3D Mario games themselves. They are not merely going from level to level, using Mario's abilities to do so. 3D Mario games (with the exception of 3D Land / 3D World) is dedicated to having Mario hunt for the stars, and I believe that the power-ups in the 3D games are merely meant to add more variety. I have such good memories with this game! I was working at Six Flags the year it came out, and we had what we called the "Wii Experience Booth". Everyone in the games department wanted this position, because not only were you in an air conditioned room in the middle of summer, but we literally were getting paid to play Wii games! It was glorious!

  • @FratFerno
    @FratFerno Před 10 lety +8

    I think Galaxy 1 is better than Galaxy 2 on just the galaxy designs. Galaxy 2 had flat, linear galaxies with no change in movement/gravity to spice them up: Flip-Swap, Flashblack, Puzzle Plank, and Haunted Halls. They look nice, but they're not as memorable as Bubble Breeze, Drip Drop, Hurry-Scurry, or Sling Pod Galaxies.

    • @k-leb4671
      @k-leb4671 Před 10 lety +2

      Wait, what was so memorable about Bubble Breeze Galaxy? I keep forgetting about that one. Although that purple liquid is amazing to look at. And the Sling Pod Galaxy didn't really have anything to it either. It was just swinging from pod to pod...it was in the depths of space which is what the Galaxy series is all about but other than was anything special about it?

    • @FratFerno
      @FratFerno Před 10 lety +4

      Caleb Jaaniste It's not really that they're memorable, but they are more unique in gameplay. I'm not sure; it could be my "Galaxy 1 came first and wowed me" bias.

    • @k-leb4671
      @k-leb4671 Před 10 lety +5

      That bias is basically what I have, but I try to avoid it. I swear before I started diving into Galaxy 2 again, the only memories I had of the games were from the first game. Maybe it was because the first game was around the internet more than the 2nd, but stuff like the music I remembered clearer than I did Galaxy 2's (Galaxy 2 still has an amazing soundtrack on par with Galaxy 1's).

      I find it way too easy, which includes the other 8 worlds of padding, the levels felt too copy pasted in those 8 other worlds, bosses were pathetic, (shouldn't be surprised, really) and power-ups, though can at least be used in every level, aren't very good. Fire Flower? Eh. Boomerang Flower? Ok, but I'd prefer the Hammer Bros Suit. Tanooki Suit? Overpowered, especially when it gets its stone statue upgrade. Sure, I don't have to use it, but then 1/3 of the power-ups are gone, and I have less variety. 3D World just was so much better, as well as every 3D Mario game.

    • @papershadow
      @papershadow Před 10 lety +2

      I think it's a combination of some sameness and Galaxy 1 just being a pretty tough act to follow.
      Think of games like Brawl or Pokemon Gen 3 or 6. They're perfectly great games in their own right, but they follow what many consider the high point of their respective series, so some find them a bit underwhelming since they didn't make quite the same degree of advancement that the previous games did.

    • @simonnielsen5565
      @simonnielsen5565 Před 10 lety

      I had the same feeling playing SMG2. Just underwhelming and a clear step back i relation to the first one. Yeah it was a good game, but also mindbogglingly linear and the lack of theme and adventure left me fairly bored often.
      It never finished the green start because at that point I was so bored with running through levels that lacked the soul and theme galaxy 1 exelled at - and I saw how uninspired a lot of them were - so I simply put down the controller and decided I could play better stuff.
      That is the main thing I have against this game. It is the way it is simply an average platformer, with much less focus on setting and theme than the previous 3D games. Yoshi didn't really help as he felt more like a strange powerup than an actual companion. Rosalina has a backseat role, despite being the best character added to the Mario universe in years. The only good powerup is the cloud - and that thing is seriously overpowered in levels that have it. Speaking of levels - 95% of them are point A to point B missions before the green stars. Galaxy 1 had a fair bit of exploration built in, although SM64 did level design better than both in many ways. Even New SMB has more exploration built in.

    • @SonicmaniaVideos
      @SonicmaniaVideos Před 10 lety +4

      Simon Nielsen
      So Linearity is a bad thing?
      I think that the soul-less comment is a bit ignorant, if the game feels underwhelming compared to the 1st...its not because it soul-less compared to the 1st. Its because it ultimately doesn't live up to the 1st game in your view, you were just expecting more than what the game offered. It makes sense, but its not entirely a flaw of the game.

      @DeepDiveDevin Před 10 lety +4

  • @Treyworld
    @Treyworld Před 10 lety +3

    Super Mario Galaxy 2. In my eyes, the perfect 3D platformer. I think the pacing and gameplay was overall better than the first one. I EXTREMELY love how Nintendo fixed the comet challenges. You could go to them at any time once you unlocked them rather than waiting for them to appear, pay the purple luma or having to force yourself to go even if you didn't feel like playing them yet. Plus the challenges were more varied and definitely more fun. People keep saying that this game didn't innovate as much as the first one did. Honestly (and I know I'm gonna get hate for this) that's kinda how I feel about Super Mario World.
    Now don't get me wrong. I absolutely adore SMW now and forever. But I never felt it did much from what Super Mario Bros 3 did. It basically was a beefed up SMB3 with some levels having multiple exits, one big world map instead of several little ones and a different power up system (yes I'm counting Yoshi as a power up). The game was on better hardware, sure. But the gameplay really didn't change much. 2D platforming perfection? Yes. Revolutionary? Uhh...debatable.
    But honestly, neither Super Mario World or Super Mario Galaxy 2 ever had to 'change the face of gaming' or anything. They just needed to be great, And by god those are two of the greatest games out there, regardless of equally great Mario games that came before. Just because Mario revolutionized the video game industry doesn't mean he has to do so every game. Game changers don't grow on trees, folks. You'll have to be patient for those to come around. And although we'll be arguing about which Mario games are better until we're dead (SMB3 vs SMW, SM64 vs SMS, SMG vs SMG2, etc.), the fact of the matter is that these are all quality games. I honestly believe that when it comes to game sequels, if you can't find a way to 'innovate' with the series yet then the best thing you can do is tweak the familiar game design and improve upon it. Even if it was already near flawless.

      Treyworld. U tooked the words right off my mouth. While Galaxy 2 may not innovate or fully new experience of an game as Galaxy had, it didn't matter. As long as the gameplay is still as good as it's predecessor, while adding something mechanics, expanding things or whatever new feature mixed in the same style of gameplay and making brand new & unique level designs, that's all I can ask for. If the game is just as good as it's predecessors, than I'll take it. And Galaxy 2; along with many other titles ( sequel or just expansion ), does that well.
