In the past, the response to elephant intrusions was slow and ineffective. Farmers relied on jeeps to chase away the elephants, but this often took too long, leaving crops unprotected and vulnerable to damage.
The Solution:
Enter the innovative use of used railway lines! Since 2014, these rail barricades have been a game-changer. By repurposing old railway lines, authorities have created strong, durable barriers that effectively deter elephants from entering farmlands.
The Success:
To date, over 68 kilometers of these rail barricades have been erected, significantly reducing elephant intrusions. Farmers in the area are now able to cultivate crops like banana and sugarcane with newfound peace of mind. The reduction in crop raids has brought immense relief and stability to their lives.
