The Browns QB situation is still a mess

- Y'all demanded a part 2, well, here ya go
In today's video we talk about the last few years of the ever revolving carousel that is the Browns starting QB spot. Who knew having a franchise QB wasn't enough to save this cursed franchise, oh yeah and they traded for a QB who may or may not deserve to be in jail, but hey he can sling them footballs am I right.
As promised, a link to the original: • All the Browns startin... - Sport
Don't ask for a part 3
Part 3?
Alright but what about a part 4?
But what about a part 24?
We'll get it when Manning is drafted in a few years don't worry
Cleveland will make you make one
If the Browns drafted Josh Allen, he'd be out of the NFL. Josh Allen was incredibly raw and took two years to develop... and Cleveland's revolving door coaching staff would have failed Allen. Baker was pro ready and harder to screw up. He was the right pick.
respect the narratives
And yet they still managed.
@@jemiller226 Mayfield's immaturity is what really snow balled the events that unfolded. He has difficulties reading and reacting to defenses and making bad decisions under pressure. Hopefully for him he will out grow these deficiencies. He wasn't the right QB for a ready to contend 'now' team.
Definitely not. I scout for hobby and Allen was awesome out of college. Media called him raw, but he played well at Wyoming. They pointed at his completion percentage but I saw a ton of drops. He just came from a bad team and people bought those narratives.
@@scoutwithoutclout There's always been scouting difficulties with the MWC/WAC. How complete are they and what's their ceiling? David Carr was screwed from the get go with no o line. Alex Smith was too raw earlier on but when given good coaches he did very well. Colt Brennan was a system qb. Zabransky was inaccurate. Josh is a freak that defied all scouts.
Matt Stafford and OBJ are the only two players I know to leave the only two teams that have ever gone 0-16 and immediately won a Super Bowl afterwards. Wild stuff
Is that wild? Or just an obscure fact?
McCourty
I think Dan Campbell was on the saints Super Bowl roster
Jason McCourty and Danny Shelton were traded from Cleveland to the Pats after their winless season to win the Super Bowl too.
Same SB team too
At least for these 2 players
Counterargument to “the browns should’ve drafted Josh Allen instead of Baker Mayfield”: Josh allen was not a good qb at first and needed a lot of development. His first season, he had 10 TDs and 12 INTs. Idk if he ever would’ve played well if he went to the Browns. In that scenario, the Bills maybe would’ve even picked Baker mayfield and he might’ve ended up playing like Josh allen did lmao
And what's the counter-argument for not using that pick on Lamar Jackson?
Its not like this guy popped out of nowhere.
Or the counter-argument for not using that pick on Barkley and packaging that extra 2nd with that extra 6th for a late first to then get Jackson?
Or the counter to saying "you know what? Mayfield looks like a fine QB talent but nothing about him screams "great NFL QB" so we will use our picks to further solidify our o- and d-line's, while also securing some offensive talent and maybe a corner, then find our QB in 2019", then going with Murray since they'd have the worst record in the league again?
Counter-argument to your counter-argument..... Yes, coming out of college Allen seemed more like a long term project... what that means for nfl qb's anymore, i honestly don't know.... 3 years? 2?
But while Allen on the surface seemed to be a project, clearly other teams saw his potential enough to draft him in the top 7, which in my opinion and in most cases, says number 1 overall is fine, it all depends on your needs. Cleveland still seemed to go with the safe, more traditional qb pick... the straight out of Texas born (Sooner but right out of TX) to be a qb guy. the safest of safe picks one could make. But again, some teams and i say "some teams " because we know multiple teams had Allen targeted in the top 15, saw what he was and had the vision to draft him appropriately........
..........which brings us to the real counter-argument to your counter-argument. To be a long term successful franchise in the nfl, hell any sports league, it takes vision, planning and foresight and at times a bit of risk. Things that while the Browns have thrown together a few solid teams over the last decade, the Browns completely lack as a franchise and is what is keeping them from long term success and what kept them from making the 2 obviously better picks or explore other options.
@@undergrounddojokeyboardcag701 counter argument- its Cleveland they would’ve fucked any of them up. Neither Josh Allen nor Lamar Jackson nor Aaron Rodgers nor Mahomes would be in the league after 3 seasons if they were drafted by Cleveland. It’s what they do.
The fact that they just borderline refuse to develop their QBs is wild to me.
It's because their owner is a trend chasing idiot.
Develop what QBs? Look at the history of Browns QBs since 1999. With the exception of Baker and Couch most of them are career journeymen backups, washed up veterans or reaches in the draft. The few times the Browns have been in a position to take a top QB in the draft they've drafted for other positions.
Baker and Allen both needed coaching and development. Allen got it. Baker did not. If Allen was drafted by Cleveland, he would be the biggest bust of the draft.
Not true. Baker just never improved on his weaknesses. He was as good in his fifth season as he was in his first season. He never learns from his mistakes.
Baker is basically a gunslinger. If you put him on a bad team he'll win them some games because of it. However if you put him on a good team with structure and ask him to win more than eight or nine games then you're asking a lot from him.
@@ScottCleve33 You mean he wasn't coached and developed: Hue Jackson, Freddy Kitchens, then Stefanski. Diggs and Beckham both demanded trades after one year in Stefanski's offense. Baker sucks. Don't care about Baker.
Baker: coach, coach, coach, talent, talent: per you. Baker sucks. He's the problem. Is that your statement?
It really is depressing how things turned out with Baker. I'm not a Browns fan, but I was always sort of rooting for them and was really happy when they got that playoff win. But poor management exacerbated every weakness in Baker's game (not throwing stones, since my Panthers did the same thing for half this season) and now he's kind of adrift. I'm hoping Baker can find some place that'll let him prove himself, or at the very least establish himself as a decent journeyman option.
What really sucks is Baker seemed like one of the only athletes who really loved repping Cleveland. Whether that's just marketing or whatever, it seemed for a little while like he was going to be The Guy, and even if he never won a ring he could be a figure for the city that hadn't really had one since Lebron left.
As for Baker's replacement, I hope he loses every game he plays and that team management choke on that awful contract.
oh dang it you made me remember I forgot to include the Progressive commercials he was in
Really wild how quickly the browns went from the good guy underdog that everyone secretly wanted to finally do well to the most hated team in the league. Baker really embodied Cleveland, for better or worse, and they let him down and threw him to the curb. How's that for irony.
Expansion Browns were a mistake
@@BHox01Idk why anyone on that coaching staff let baker play with an injured shoulder just so he could suck for an entire season. Not only did he injure it, he reinjured it like week 6, and it was obvious that baker was cooked after that. Leave it to Cleveland to make the one guy who wanted to play for them to fuck him over.
I mean hey, Baker got a 3-yr $100m deal now 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️
The highly anticipated sequel has finally arrived! Can’t wait for the Trilogy. As a Browns fan, I can all but guarantee that there will be plenty of material for a part 3.
Browns will start getting a return on their investment next season.
to be fair about allen, the fact that he panned out is a miracle, even more so than mahomes he needed the exact set of coaches he got to succeed, he had the potential, and he was one of very few to unlock it.
100% true but counterpoint its funnier to imagine the Browns messed up again
@@justmaxproductions I'll give you that one.
miracle? no, he was coachable which allowed for him to grow as a qb
@@howdareyouexistno he went to a good coaching staff which allowed him to develop properly instead of to the football version of hell on earth
Awesome job with how you handled (REDACTED).
Holy moly I totally forgot that missed head tackle call against the Browns.
Chiefs really have been getting some suspicious help in the playoffs
It's not suspicious, it's obvious.
Anytime I see that Gurriel homerun, you get my thumbs up my good man.
Younghoe Koo WAS the prize of that draft, as a chiefs fan.
Well it's about dang time you came back Mr. Productions. Welcome back sir, your videos are always a blast to watch!
Watsons entire life throwing has been in Georgia, South Carolina, and inside in Texas. Zero clue if he can consistently throw in 15-20 mph crosswinds in cold weather. A lot of perma-south/west coast boys can't. The cold is overrated but the wind part is badly underrated. Now at least 2/3rds of his games in November and December will be in open air stadiums off waterfronts in the north
that's actually a decent theory
*That's what I told someone else.*
it makes me so irrationally happy you used the Panthers week 1 white out field design. I’m pretty sure they only used it once, and because they were out of blue paint lol.
attention to (unimportant) details is what I do best
Speaking of jacoby brissett vs the falcons I remember he dotted us up while playing for the dolphins. Our secondary was playing so badly a few years ago that brissett completed his first 11 or 12 passes of the game and the announcers said we were making him look like Peyton Manning
The Baker Mayfield saga. As someone who sat through a roving carousel of QBs due to a UCL injury 2 years prior, I see this as a total collapse by Stefanski and, not surprising to anyone who remembers the staph infection outbreak of 2008, the Browns trainers.
if the Browns just sat Baker and told him to get healthy after the Cardinals game they wouldn't be in this mess
@@justmaxproductions Exactly. But instead Stefanski had to manufacture yet another power struggle with a player. Notice how all of his issues have been with offensive players, yet the DC got let go...
@justmaxproductions regardless of how tough baker was and how much he wanted to play, the browns knew how valuable he was to their future and they never should've let him play. Absolute failure by the browns, they didn't take care of their man, as usual
He’s not on anybody’s roster bra ?
@@justmaxproductions *That right there* is one of the opposite examples of how most people think. Everyone _tends to_ side with the team over the player with a great example being Aaron Rodgers who has been treated like crap by the Packers since Day One.
But Baker had believers. So they don't want any blame to have the possibility of being on him. But in this case, some of it was.
To me though, you're 100% right. They could have sat him out a game.
Seeing the 2022 Jets game again makes me sad
Remember when everyone thought they were going to make the playoffs again?
Browns fans are the only people in existence who want to go back to 2020
@@justmaxproductions so true
And Baker led the Buccaneers to the Playoffs, and I repeat he won a playoff game, with Deshawn? He got injured and replaced with Joe Flacco, who looked 10x better than Deshawn did on the Browns and led them to the playoffs.
the football gods actually sent me a message that said "nice video, here's part 3 material"
The most expected Sequel
I can't help think how baker could have ended up with a strong and stable coaching staff and front office. I look at the Steelers and how they tend to develop players well (lower round draft picks turning into strong players, rarely hitting a bust in the higher rounds, free agents that develop well, etc) and wonder about some of the QB's that went top 5 overall to struggling teams like Baker, wilson, fields, etc if they had gone to pittsburgh or the pats or some other really STABLE org. Makes you wonder /shrug
Lol no it doesn't. Mac Jones still sucks. He wasn't a good fit for Pats. And Kenny Pickett was up and down and waaaay to early to speak about his development. Browns developed players like Nick Chubb, David Nojoku, and there O line has alot of guys the coaching staff has bettered. The Browns have developed plenty of talent. Sure they have missed on QB alot but there are plenty of players the coaching staff helped grow.
@@kiaadams104 Mac Jones lost his offensive coordinator, McDaniel. They had no OC last season. Belichick wouldn't hire one.
The Browns do have a strong and stable coaching staff. Baker has just reached his peak is all. Baker does what Baker does. The Browns coaching staff, with a strong running game limited Bakers mistakes in 2020 but when he has to carry the load he's not consistent enough and makes too many mistakes. You can put him on a bad team and his gunslinger style will win them some games vs some teams but if you're a .500 team he won't make them better. His mistakes become noticeable.
Man, I really liked Baker. As a lifelong Browns fan, this Baker to Watson bullshit is what finally pushed me away.
I’ll root for them again once Watson is out of Cleveland.
Me and you both. That team is dead to me until Watson is off that team. I hope they crash and burn and the contract ruins the team
I agree baker wasn't the best but he was ours and that trade killed my love for this team
Now that Baker is gone I'm able to start rooting for the Browns once again. I admit it was fun when Baker was in Cleveland to not care bout watching games and I even found the humor the rest of the league found in the Browns constant way of losing from week to week. Especially when that loss was directly attributed to Baker being Baker once again.
It doesnt matter who you put in Cleveland, the franchise is doomed to endlessly cycle between barely playoff bound mediocrity and sub .500 ball. Front office people, coaches and talent all dont want to go there because the stink of that franchise is so strong, no one with any asperations of championship glory wants anything to do with it. And if they manage to build a worth while squad of those key pieces its usually a one and done situation with most of the staff and high end players wanting off a ship they know is prone to sinking .
That bit on trubisky had me laughing so hard! Got me to subscribe I was laughing so hard
I’ve been waiting for this since the Baker debacle lol
as soon as they traded him away I was like "oh great now I have to make a sequel"

The Browns inability to coach up QBs since their return is almost impossible, but they did it. I don't think it would have mattered who they drafted at QB, they haven't had the staff to develop them.

As a browns fan I'm Ngl but it'll make it feel better if and when we're good and ppl hate us
OMG YES!!! I didn't think this episode would happen 😂😂😂
I WAS WAITING ON THIS ONE!!!!!
I honestly think if they gave him more time that he'd at least bring them more consistent success. I just think they're going to lose their ass on Watson. It's going to be incredibly hard to keep quality weapons around him with that cap hit and he hasn't really been all that impressive. Add on top of that the fact that it's hard to escape the reputation he has now regardless of how the accusations turn out on court. Hard to really get people interested in your team when your star player has that reputation. Meanwhile Baker was a huge fan favorite. Wasn't perfect but with more time to develop he probably could end up being pretty decent, which is a monumental upgrade over every other QB the Browns have had for years.

20:24 As a Patriots Fan, we were drinking the Bailey Zappe Kool-Aid for a while until we were snapped back to reality
Thank you for Part 2.

browns finally have an elite quarterback now (funny enough another former raven)
Aaron Rodgers and Josh Allen would've just been forgotten about Browns busts if they'd have been drafted by the Browns. Aaron Rodgers sat 3 years and still needed time to adjust and the glitz and glamour of Allen now tends to blind people to his first two seasons, the first being very ugly. Put these two QBs ugly first seasons in Cleveland and they're declared busts, coaches and GMS get fired, creating an unstable environment that stunts their development, the spiral downward starts and the team is looking around for the next QB.
As someone who became a Browns fan in 2020 after Phil Rivers left the Chargers and finally severed all of their ties to San Diego, I loved watching Baker and the team go off, and then hated watching him play with injury pretty much all of the '21 season and essentially play himself out of favor, sadly enough. Then when Cleveland traded for the person who won't be named, I cut all ties with them as someone who is close to victims of the same thing that said person who won't be named is alleged of doing. I know Baker's career is likely DOA entering next season, but I really hope he does find a way to turn it around. As for the Browns...quite frankly, I hope they enjoy absolutely zero success so long as the ownership, coaching staff, and said player are still in town. Never rooting for them again so long as any three of those elements are in play.
Really great video, good stuff.
I am rooting for any team that playes them to beat them
Love the intro music. Good video.
He should still be on the browns they did him dirty. Cleveland prove beggars CAN be choosers. And even if Watson wins them the Super Bowl (god forbid) it just won’t sit right. Can’t even make a good Cinderella story out of it
I enjoy watching them lose now, and I been a fan since 03.
If the browns had kept baker for the final year of his contract they would have been probably 10 and 7 and still have all their draft picks and cap space that they gave up to get the bust named Watson
Ok the goat is actually back tho. Please include the Gurriel clip in every video in the future
I try lol, it's easier in the baseball videos but I think I know how I can work it into my next basketball video

Wake up babe, Max made a video about Browns QBs
Again
4:00 I think development plays a huge part though. Allen had a worse first 2 years than Baker and arguably even Sam, but the Bills did pretty much everything right in terms of committing to him and building around him. It's possible that if the Browns draft Josh Allen his career could have shaken out VERY differently
On the other hand, if Allen had had two years behind that OL and with Chubb running the ball, his won/loss would have probably been just fine. I do agree the Bills offensive staff was key to developing Allen whereas the Browns entire offensive philosophy has been to minimize any dependence on QB production while neglecting development. Throwing money at Watson is an attempt to overcome this failing.
Only max could sneak a Gurriel in a video about Browns QBs
I wasn't gonna but then the commentator said "home run pass" and the lightbulb went off
Deshaun Watson might not lead the league in passing, but he will lead it in 'happy endings." Unfortunately, those "happy endings" will have nothing to do with team wins.
You are too funny, keep it up I'll be there

I wrote that line before Goff had a PB season because of course he did lol
"Gurriel!.." 💀
Not to mention Kellen Winslow JR instead of Ben Roethlisberger. Who played college ball in Ohio.
Josh Allen need a great team around him to develop and browns never really had that they couldn’t protect baker which means they also couldn’t have protected Josh

You do understand the Browns would have ruined any qb that has been drafted right? I mean not only Josh Allen, but I seriously doubt anyone could handle the way it has treated it's qbs. Confidence is a tough thing to cultivate and eventually the team just leaves qbs asking if it is actually them and then it is almost game over. Jury is still out on Baker. Just because he came in and teams didn't know how to scheme against him and he had a few good games don't mean shit. Lets see how he does.
I did realize this, I chose to ignore it because it was funnier
