  • A massive fruit bat colony has decided to set up camp next door. Besides the screeching, of the god knows how many flying foxes, there's the smell. Bat poo stinks.

Appreciate them for what they are, an amazing species and a truly spectacular sight.
Unfortunately, it is you, not them, who have moved into their habitat. If they weren't there when you moved in then they'll not roost there permanently, they'll move on. No need for drastic measures like shotguns!
Large numbers of individuals is not proof that a species is not endangered. Fruitbats are a colony roosting species, and therefore all the bats in the area roost together; they are still at risk.

    Yes, "threatened", not endangered.
I don't think i can look for a single minute at the night sky around here without seeing some flying around. There's roosting sites all over Brisbane.
They're always at the fruit-trees around about, I don't mind them so much as i mind that the neighbourhood dogs bark at them - so it's a barking-all-night-every-night kindof thing.

It may be hard to see, since (being very social animals) they appear in great numbers where they roost, but the facts are the facts - they are a threatened species.

Consider yourself fortunate to have habitat appropriate for such an important ecological species. Bats need help not condemnation. They pollinate our trees and spread seed to make forests. What do you contribute?

What happened to the good old days when you could pull out the shot gun and shoot a few hundred. That really worked wonders in clearing the camps.

    leave them alone.
there is a reason why they are there. it could be be, 10, 50 or 100 years since they have visited that particular area. they may stay or move on.. depends on the food source.
you moved there.. and they moved back... poss you could move. maybe your council or government dept should of made you aware before moving in/building so close to a camp.
