in this one interview (i forgot the specific one) the director says they end up together! which is why scott's line is referenced, because scott is mike's home.

My Own Private Idaho's Screenplay is online so you can read it (trust me its the greatest fucking thing on earth, totally wished they'd stayed with the screenplay all the way ).
The guy in the car is indeed Scott taking mike (in the screenplay) .
In the movie on the other hand, it's more of an open ending movie thing, making you ask yourself is it his brother, Scott, or some random guy.
But since the screenplay came out first its most definitely Scotty taking Mike.
@@jessrin2300 because of you, I went to Google and read the screenplay. Oh my, so many important scenes and conversations were added to the final product. The campfire scene was more rich and clearly a declaration of love rather than the vague desire that I just read. Mike doesn't have a conversation with Carmella about how she was in love now. There weren't any of those Shakespearen bits with Bob. And Scott was the one to pick up Mike at the end. I am so in love. I really like how the movie ended though. That uncertainty of not knowing who was the guy at the end and that almost mocking "have a nice day" wouldn't have impacted me the same way if it left this more clear. Nevertheless, I am so glad I know it was Scott.

Ive never seen this movie. This came up in my recommended today and so i watched it. I started crying uncontrollably when mike was explaining how he felt to Scott. I now need to find a way to watch this.

So basically it starts with mike on this long road waiting to be picked up by a guy. He's a homeless street hustler. He also struggles with narcolepsy. He meets this friend named Scott. Scott's the mayor's son but he doesn't like his father. The point of the movie was for Mike to find his mother. Mike confesses his love for Scott but Scott doesn't believe that two men could love eachother. But he stays friends with him and cares for him instead of pushing him away. When Mike and Scott go to Italy, Scott meets a girl named Carmella and they fall in love with eachother. Mike is unhappy with this. There's a character named Bob that Scott liked more than his father. When Scott's father dies, he'll inherit a huge fortune
After he gets the money he basically turns into this douchebag and ditches Bob and Mike. Bob dies shortly after and Scott's dad's funeral and Bob's funeral are directly across from eachother. Bob's less formal than Scott's. Mike doesn't find his mom by the end and it ends with him passed out on that same road and being picked up by a guy. Sad ending, I guess.
