Incredible that in one of the biggest shows of this country a Cuban was the main character. He was ridiculed, mocked, discriminated and underestimated...Yet he had brains enough to build an Empire called Desilu Productions...don't ever under estimate a Cuban. RIP Desi. we love you!!!!
It was all correct except 1 part: where you said "Dont ever underestimate a Cuban". And that's completely incorrect and had nothing to do with his success. The correct thing to say would be Don't ever underestimate a determined, hard working individual that won't take no for an answer. Has nothing to do with being Cuban. I know plenty of lazy, piece of shit Cubans just as I do every other race. I also know plenty of good hardworking people of all backgrounds. It's about what you were raised with (or many cases, without) and how determined you are... and in Desidorio aka Desi's case, he was the real deal and proved all the naysayers wrong. Desi and his family has everything taken from them and came here with his father and made it.
He was a genius that never got the recognition he deserved, one of the coolest people around, even as he aged, he loved to make fun of himself, he was great,
Desi is such a great guest. It's so nice to hear him give credit to the others involved with the show. Very generous heart. I love his accent, and I'm glad he still has it. He was so handsome when he was young.
Yes, DesiLu Productions produced The Andy Griffith Show, Gomer Pyle and The Untouchables among others. Desi was a business genius. Their kids were left very well off.
Margaret , ahhh not so much they. We're not broke but Desi Arnez didn't want to run the company when they broke up ,he did for a while but still drinking to excess hurt the company so he wanted Lucille to buy him out she did and managed the company and her own show eventually that became too much for her and she sold out to Paramount Studios. So their children have no control over anything they produced.
Two things: First, I don’t think I’ve ever seen Dave so respectful to ANY guest as much as he was to Desi… rightly so…. And second, the impact that Desi Arnaz has had on our lives, for those of us over 50, is immense. His contribution to TV, cinema, comedy, etc. can’t be overstated. Of course, Lucy, too….. two absolute legends! I’d give anything to be able to back to those more innocent, pure times of television.
Very true. Even Lucy admitted that she was the actor and Desi was the brains- especially with innovation and shows DesiLu came out with. She also made a great point- the Desi could win big but then was self destructive and subconsciously tear what he built down as well. It’s amazing you bring up “over 50”… I just entered this age group recently- and literally watched re runs every day.
BS. He was a horrible man. Playing hide the peepee was more important than this family. He could have been a great man. He choose selfishness. Male bullshit Crap

The Late Great Desi Arnaz Sr! First, he was a great Bandleader! Second, he was a brilliant producer which most people don’t know about. He was the one who insisted that the Lucy show be filmed on 35 millimeter stock film which was high quality and more expensive than video tape. And because of this, he created syndication otherwise known as reruns. This made many producers and creators rich who were paid handsomely for their syndication rights. This made tv production very lucrative for many people. All thanks to Desi! He was a pioneer and created Desilu productions with Lucille Ball which was a successful production studio for years! All in all, he achieved the American Dream that most immigrants dream about! He became a millionaire and had worldwide fame! And he’s still well loved because of the I Love Lucy show which is still one of the classic and funniest sitcoms of all time! RIP Desi and Lucy
Boggy I just looked, video tape was invented in 1951, the same year I Love Lucy first aired. The common practice back then was kinescope, a film camera focused on the video monitor of the live cameras, that’s what gives reruns of older shows that odd sort of /flat/ look.
There's no denying his showmanship and smarts. A true television pioneer. In all of his interviews he came across as authentic. Would have loved having a few drinks with him and listening to his stories.

This is why I love CZcams. I remember watching this interview live back in 1983 when I was 12 with my parents. My parents (they were both born in 1953 just like little Ricky) myself AND my own children grew up watching I LOVE LUCY reruns. Now, so are my own grandchildren. I LOVE LUCY is loved by five generations in my family; my grandparents, my parents, my children and now my own grandchildren!!
Craig Smith your parents let you stay up to watch “Late Night” when you were twelve? I was 17 when this episode aired. It came on after “The Tonight Show”. Which meant, at least here in the Midwest, that Desi didn’t come on screen until almost midnight.
1. He cheated on nationally beloved Lucille Ball and that turned people against him. 2. He's not white and we know how that went in the US in those days (and beyond). Good for Lucy and Desi for having the balls to turn racism on its ugly head though in their shows. But you are right that he didn't get the recognition he deserved. He created DesiLu Productions and developed new ways to use cameras on set. Amazing gentleman. I was born in the 50's. When I hear his voice I feel like a family member has walked into the room. Unique speaking voice. God bless his soul.
@@redwoods7370 I too was born in the 50's, and, like you, to this day, STILL feel like I am hearing a beloved family member or friend at the sound of his voice. It wasn't just the original run of "I Love Lucy" we lived with, but the wonderful years of the show LIVING on television in syndication that blissfully followed after! ; )
Americans just loved Desi: he was special and underrated as a producer, genius behind the scenes of *I Love Lucy* & as a straight man in that incredible show. RIP Mr. Arnaz!
The more I watch episodes of I Love Lucy over the years (and there's been a lot of years, lol ... from reruns on network TV during my childhood to the VHS collections where they doled out two episodes per tape in the 80's, then finally clear DVD resolution and complete season sets in the late 1990's or thereeabouts, and eventually blu-ray, or streaming), the more I appreciate Desi's work on it. He is so very funny as Ricky Ricardo. Great timing, expressions, reactions. A natural talent, and a fun match for Lucy. It's not just the way they made comedy out of Ricky having problems with English ... overall, Mr. Arnaz was simply a very funny performer. It's a rare thing, for someone to be both a shrewd and clever business person and also a wonderful entertainer. Lucy and Desi both had these qualities. Happy 70th Anniversary to I Love Lucy. This sitcom will remain beloved forever. Watch some episodes this month; it's a sure fire way to beat the doldrums and have a super time.
A wonderful actor, businessman, and producer - one of the best, in fact. Desi Arnaz was legendary - if only people gave him more credit; without him, I Love Lucy would never have been the smash hit it was. Desilu remains one of the most revered names in the TV industry - and it was all done by him; even Lucille Ball stated that she had no part in the business until she took it over in 1962 - it was all Desi doing the building of the empire. Thank you Desi; you were a great man.
uhh no it was not. In fact, it wasn't Desi's either. I don't know where you got the idea that it was lucy's - it was Jess and Desi doing all the production work. The multi cam idea was in place since the late 40s. Desi's idea was to shoot on 35mm film, in front of a studio audience, with 3 cameras- nobody used "2 cameras". Lucy was amazing - but she was not a tv production pioneer.
MR. DESI ARNAZ HE'S A LEGEND, AN ICON, A GENIUS AND GENIUS INVENTOR. HE CHANGED THE TV GAME. HE WAS AHEAD OF HIS TIME. THE CLASSIC LEGENDARY SHOW ALWAYS MAKES EVERYONE LAUGH. THAT'S WHY TIL THIS DAY THE SHOW IS ALWAYS RELEVANT. HE BROKE DOWN MANY BARRIERS FOR US LATINOS TOO GOD BLESS.
I'd never seen this. Desi was filled with such a--I dunno, joie-de-vivre?? When he got up and sang, I felt like we were transported back to a filming in front of a live audience of an old "I Love Lucy" episode and he seemed to have 20 years taken off of him. What a businessman and larger-than-life multitalent he was. I sorely wish that circumstances and intentions could have been such, that he and Lucille did some professional performance or project together one more time before he passed.
The I Love Lucy shows brought us so much laughter, it was a show my husband and I really looked forward to seeing..many many years have passed and they have and will be Icons..Thank you..Desi, Lucy, Fred and Ethel..👏👏👏
Dave is so good at his job. With these old guys, get out of the way and let them talk. I love that he's smoking, visibly struggling with his breathing but the song starts and he's right back in it, singing beautifully and pleasing the crowd. A true professional.
After decades of being know mostly as Lucy's husband, Ricky Ricardo is finally going to get the overdue recognition that he deserves as a master song and dance man, leader of a great Latin swing band, expert comic actor, and brilliant businessman.
I learned the concept of time and death as a child because of Lucy and Desi! When I was 7 yrs old watching Lucy reruns I used to think they were young still in 1988 like they were in the 1950s. As I kid I had no idea that the 1950s were a long long time ago. Watching the I Love Lucy show reruns in the late 1980s as a little kid I used to think it was filmed in the current time period never thought of the 1950s as a long time ago. I never thought the I Love Lucy cast would be old looking or dead in the 1980s I thought they still be looking the same. Later around 1991 when I was in the doctors office I picked up a People magazine and read the articles inside only to find out the whole cast of I love Lucy had died many years previously: Vivian Vance died in 1979, William Frawley died in 1966, Desi Arnaz died in 1986 and Lucille Ball died in 1989, and it hit me like bricks to my chest that people age and die I got teary eyed knowing they been dead awhile as I thought they were alive and young😢 Reading that the cast of I Love Lucy were dead as a child was like lighting hitting my child brain that people get old and die. I also finally understood the concept of time like the 1950s were a long time ago not just a few weeks ago like I thought as a kid. RIP Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz, William Frawley and Vivian Vance
I've been watched I Love Lucy on Hulu recently and it honestly saddens me a little to see him looking so old, and knowing he's gone now, along with the rest. RIP ❤️❤️❤️
A brilliant innovator and businessman. Desilu studios broke so much ground and touched so many shows, including "Star Trek". Desilu became Paramount Television.
Desi Arnaz..was a pioneer in the early days of television ..he basically started the the reruns process on TV as we know today....and was a genius ..but was under appreciated..by his peers at the time.. but He and Lucy were/are Legends...
Part of the reason for I Love Lucy's enduring success was the fact that Desi/Lucy insisted on recording on film and not kinescope. With film they could do prints of episodes and sale for syndication. Of course it also helps it was an incredibly funny show. Humor that still holds up today.
❤️Desi was, so, so smart, yes he did create the 3 🎥 camera taping, that up to now in 2022 we are using. He also created Desilu Studios back in the 1950’s wow!! That is so admirable❤️❤️❤️👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
According to his daughter, he never received any awards for his work, let alone any acknowledgments, until after his death in 1986. He even admitted, that he was the guy, who never really fit in. Regardless, I think it really didn't matter to him much, as long as the "I Love Lucy brand", his project, was getting the attention from people all around the world. He truly loved his wife, Lucy.
Desi Arnaz was amazing. All through the interview, I felt like, I was watching I Love Lucy His accent, attitude, singing, the energy was all there still years later. His voice was still rich despite smoking. Thank you for this wonderful post.
It's weird because when I'm watching this video clip I'm still picturing him from the days of I Love Lucy with the jet black hair and young. I haven't seen really any interviews with him in his later years, so this was a treat.

I LOVE LUCY is loved by five generations in my family; my grandparents, my parents, my children and now my own grandchildren!!
I remember too! I still watch the old shows like Quincy and so forth.lol
Craig Smith Same here! 👍
Craig Smith your parents let you stay up to watch “Late Night” when you were twelve?
I was 17 when this episode aired. It came on after “The Tonight Show”. Which meant, at least here in the Midwest, that Desi didn’t come on screen until almost midnight.
@@tanya5322 I had my own T.v and headphones. Even though I had a bedtime I snuck in late t.v.watching lol
Imagine sitting in the audience there and Ricky Ricardo is doing one of his songs from the club right there in front of you. Insane
Awesome!!!!!!!
This one is worth multiple likes. Desi Arnaz Sr. still rocks.
This guy was the most savvy businessman you can imagine. Desi Arnaz, among many things, invented reruns & the three-camera sit-com.
Speaking he sounds older but when he sang it was like he was 30 years old. Amazing!!
Kayla i thought the same thing, Kayla
He was truly such a charming and lovely man. RIP Desi Arnaz ♡♡♡
Desi Arnaz-brilliant businessman and loved entertainer. The man never received the recognition he deserved during his lifetime
God bless his soul.
dont forget the cad part...
Lauren that’s a very rude word! My God, may he RIP!!
I agree!! Desi Arnaz was a great man!!
@@redwoods7370 I too was born in the 50's, and, like you, to this day, STILL feel like I am hearing a beloved family member or friend at the sound of his voice. It wasn't just the original run of "I Love Lucy" we lived with, but the wonderful years of the show LIVING on television in syndication that blissfully followed after! ; )
His voice sounds the way it did in I Love Lucy. His voice definitely did not age.
EricWilke1141987 exactly because the way Desi sounded when he sang on I Love Lucy is exactly how he sounded in his performance on Letterman
Americans just loved Desi: he was special and underrated as a producer, genius behind the scenes of *I Love Lucy* & as a straight man in that incredible show. RIP Mr. Arnaz!
He sang that song on a Lucy episode.....still sings it great here. Brilliant, legendary performer.
Did he? I knew I had heard him sing it before! It sounds exactly like it used to because I got definite flashbacks.
Yeah, but the two camera idea was Lucy's.
uhh no it was not.
LelGaming .... True story well said my friend !!!
Desi Arnez was a great visionary of our time ,Bravo Mr.Arnez r.i.p sir !
Reruns are possible due to this man.
He could still sing decently 3 years before he died. What a legend.
He was a pioneer! In Production, 3 cameras, the sitcom! Still his voice was great when he sang
He aged because of alcohol. 3 years later, he died of cancer. RIP Desi Arnaz Sr. U were a genius! Your legacy lives on!
Even though this man is dying from lung cancer he sounds better than 90% of the stuff on the radio in 2020. God bless Lucy and Desi
Desi...and Lucy were BOTH National TREASURES!
What a legend. He created the mold and the business model of the producer/actor.
Sometimes it feels like desi didn't get enough credit.
Desi was the *only* person who hosted SNL and received a standing ovation.
I thought that Betty White did when she later hosted, but if that's the case, well deserved. One of the best hosts that first year.
@@michaelj.r457 Oops!
I miss Desi and Lucy. They created something so memorable
His singing was sensational! Sounded so much like when he was younger. Desi was in top form that night.
Wow! Just amazing! He never lost it. He was a phenomenal performer till the end. What a brilliant and talented man.
After decades of being know mostly as Lucy's husband, Ricky Ricardo is finally going to get the overdue recognition that he deserves as a master song and dance man, leader of a great Latin swing band, expert comic actor, and brilliant businessman.
I've always found him much funnier than Lucille Ball.
@@tidesofthemoon Me too
I learned the concept of time and death as a child because of Lucy and Desi!
Later around 1991 when I was in the doctors office I picked up a People magazine and read the articles inside only to find out the whole cast of I love Lucy had died many years previously: Vivian Vance died in 1979, William Frawley died in 1966, Desi Arnaz died in 1986 and Lucille Ball died in 1989, and it hit me like bricks to my chest that people age and die I got teary eyed knowing they been dead awhile as I thought they were alive and young😢
Reading that the cast of I Love Lucy were dead as a child was like lighting hitting my child brain that people get old and die. I also finally understood the concept of time like the 1950s were a long time ago not just a few weeks ago like I thought as a kid. RIP Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz, William Frawley and Vivian Vance
marinerosany The impact they had🤗💟
Im with you man... used to watch those reruns ALL THE TIME!!! Real, wholesome television, man it's sooooo different now, really shitty
I've been watched I Love Lucy on Hulu recently and it honestly saddens me a little to see him looking so old, and knowing he's gone now, along with the rest. RIP ❤️❤️❤️
The 1950s were no further distant than the 1980s are now. That makes your head spin, doesn’t it?!
A brilliant innovator and businessman. Desilu studios broke so much ground and touched so many shows, including "Star Trek". Desilu became Paramount Television.
Omg he’s amazing idk why but this was very emotional, for me.
he was the brains and smarts behind I LOVE LUCY....bless u sir
I love it that people never forget their roots
Desi Arnaz..was a pioneer in the early days of television ..he basically started the the reruns process on TV as we know today....and was a genius ..but was under appreciated..by his peers at the time.. but He and Lucy were/are Legends...
Part of the reason for I Love Lucy's enduring success was the fact that Desi/Lucy insisted on recording on film and not kinescope. With film they could do prints of episodes and sale for syndication. Of course it also helps it was an incredibly funny show. Humor that still holds up today.
Desi was a trailblazer in more ways than one-He passed away almost thirty-five years ago-Thanks for posting!
Even late in life, he was still a handsome man.
Oh my gosh that man has so much charm!
Desliu is today known as CBS Media Ventures, which is part of Paramount.
Right now, somewhere, sometime today, and every day, Desilu productions is on TV, somewhere in the world.
Lucy and Desi both consistently gave credit to Vivian, William and the writers. They knew they didn't pull this off alone and always shared credit.
They were surely blessed May they rest in peace
Initially, Lucy wanted Gale Gordon to play "Fred", but Desi pushed and persevered for "Fred"., William Frawley and he did a fine job.
Because they were professionals!
I don't think Desi got all the credit that he deserved, he was very smart and talent, and he always talk very respectfully of Lucy Ball
He got a lot of credit, I love Lucy was among the top sitcoms of all time!
angelina angel yes he did.
He truly loved his wife, Lucy.
angelina angel / 🤔 yes he was Attracted to the Opposite Sex. !!! I am too . Matthew 19:3-6
@@catlady7773 He loved cheating on her and beating her as well. What a guy🤗
R.I.P. Desi. Thanks for the memories.
Desi Arnaz was amazing. All through the interview, I felt like, I was watching I Love Lucy His accent, attitude, singing, the energy was all there still years later. His voice was still rich despite smoking. Thank you for this wonderful post.
I just love Desi, he was such a brilliant businessman and entertainer 💖
Hello Connie, How are you doing?
It's weird because when I'm watching this video clip I'm still picturing him from the days of I Love Lucy with the jet black hair and young. I haven't seen really any interviews with him in his later years, so this was a treat.
Same here
I believe after I love Lucy and the Desi-Lucy comedy hour Desi retired and rarely gave interviews in his later years. so I agree this was a treat.
He still sounded pretty much the same. Pretty darn good.
I agree
+Gitana Rox he was about 65 years old in this video.
I so respect him. He worked so hard for everything.
Desi was an astute businessman and invented the two camera filming method- which change tv forever.
@@lionheartroar3104 He was brilliant! And a fine actor with excellent timing. Also great musician and singer. Talented man!
What a talented individual...and what a SINGING voice! Bravo! And R.I.P. Desi!
He worked with the kings of kings in live music, radio, movies, and television . A golden era indeed.
