I never understood the idea of gatekeeping things because someone doesn’t know every single thing about the subject. It’s like “oh the only musical you know is Wicked? 🙄You’re a fake fan.” I’m the opposite. “The only musical you know is Wicked? I LOVE that for you! Carry on new friend!”
Or, better yet, you can offer to introduce them to more. Like instead of saying “ugh, you haven’t seen this one? You’re a fake fan!”, we can be like “Hey, you haven’t seen this one yet? Maybe I can show you and, hopefully, you’ll like it.”
I'm like that but only towards myself. I feel like a fake fan if I don't know everything about a subject, it's so bad because I feel guilty for casually liking stuff
I never understood it either! I live on the west coast and have never been to new York and have a limited accessablity to seeing shows.
I struggle with catching up with everything so I understand not everyone knows a bunch of broadway shows/soundtracks. Not everyone has access.
As long as you like and respect any aspect of theatre, you are a real fan.
lol i try to be like that but i instinctively get so defensive of my interests but im working on it.
Me immediately seeing the official teaser with no actual original music from the show instantly waiting for Sam and Ryan to express the tea about the current state of the “theatre kid” community.
Am I the only one that saw the trailer and didn’t realize it was a musical? I heard that they were making a movie musical of mean girls and was so excited. When I saw the trailer I thought “oh, they decide to just make a remake”. I had no clue it was a musical until diving deeper!
Your description of how musical theater became trending in mainstream media reminds me of how K-pop has now became "in" in the mainstream. 10-15 years ago, you'd be labeled as weird or maybe even bullied if they knew you were a K-pop fan, but thanks to BTS and Blackpink's populartiy, now K-pop has been more popular than ever in the West. As a Korean-American myself, seeing that has been really surreal.
Onto the Mean Girls musical movie, the theory of the trailer leaving out the music from the actual musical soundtrack being intentional is very interesting, I never really looked at it that way and I'm very interested to see how it plays out. I'll definitely be seated on January 12th! Bring on Renee Rapp!
I think fandom culture itself has become cool! We’re becoming accepting of people expressing and celebrating the things that bring them joy and I love that musical theater is part of that ❤
I'm with Ryan on this, it seems to me more like a misunderstanding of the culture and being afraid to reveal it is a musical. They're not gonna get the non-theater fans who think this is just a remake because why would they go see a remake?

Most studios aren't taking that risk. It'll be cast with very little cast members from a few of the stage versions with more big name actors.
i feel like a movie musical about heathers would be disappointing, but i would REALLY want a revival of heathers off broadway or even on broadway

Ah, so glad to see you guys again! So far you are the first theatre CZcamsrs I follow who've reacted to this, and you're so eloquent and knowledgeable it's always great to hear your takes!
I have a Disney Plus musical series idea called, "Growing Up With Disney" (inspired by me and my account) where in the show at school, musical theater kids are the popular ones, and the jocks are the ones who are seen as uncool. But then there's my character who ends up getting made fun of for loving Disney movies/shows/musicals, where that is seen is TOO weird/childish to people. And the jocks will start this school revolution to get themselves on top, while the musical theater kids will show how much progress we've made but there's a lot of work to be done in allowing people to feel express themselves and feel included. I hope it'll ultimately show togetherness and finding your tribe.

I decided one day to do a deep dive on Heathers, learning that it was originally a movie + a musical. (I learnt this about Mean Girls too but haven't really touched it since). I decided to listen to all the songs, of which then I loved because they rock. I think I might have annoyed the people in my car with playing Freeze My Brain and Seventeen on repeat. I was talking to my friends about them and holy fuck so many of them knew about Heathers. This was good because I could ask them their favourite songs. Then I did a deep dive on Six the musical because I'm British and wanted to know more about the six wives of Henry VII because we hadn't talked about them too much (over than Catherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn, and partly Jane Seymour). I now have the Six songs in my spotify playlist. Right now I am doing a deep dive into Beetlejuice (mostly bcs one of the singers in it is a VA in a youtube series I like) and am enjoying the songs.

Pfft yeah Six was the first musical I got super into because I've always loved history especially Medieval Europe I straight up hyperfixated on the Black Death from about 8 years old and I loved learning about the lifestyle at the time (and yes I was absolutely a horrible histories kid) so after listening to six I ended up reading up on the queens (Mostly Anne Boleyn and slightly less on Catherine of Aragon) and then I'd infodump on anyone who'd sit still long enough and I'd talk about references in the songs and points out bits that were historically inaccurate and I've actually seen it twice and am planning to see it a third time (it's also a pretty good musical to get people into musicals because it's not super long and it's pretty upbeat and all done in one sitting so it's easy for people to digest)
Although I absolutely love that it’s more mainstream now and you have these people on the outskirts who just dip their toes in but don’t know everything. It also kind of bothers me to like have a single person say a Hamilton quote in my school chat and suddenly everyone’s a theater major but I still don’t have anyone who keeps up with Broadway and knows every lyric to every song. I love that others love it, I don’t love how now we’re to the point where “everyone’s an expert” but still can’t talk to me about what’s on Broadway, or actor/esses, or even who Sondheim is. I love it but also get annoyed sometimes.

The big question, will the first Wicked movie trailer have singing/show it's a musical? Mean Girls didn't, The Color Purple barely did (if i remember correctly), Wonka didn't...Matilda had to since it was titled as Matilda The Musical
i kinda wish they'd just make musicals for the fans to appreciate. what they did with the mean girls trailer was super deceptive. i studied marketing so i get that angle, but ive seen wss, deh, tic tic boom, in the heights, heck even theater camp. like you said, we will show up. but i guess us alone arent profitable enough.
I've noticed the last few years hollywood have avoided to show the musical parts of movie musicals in the trailers. Hope we get a musical clip or something

I find it strange how a lot of people who use viral musical theater sounds on tiktok like heathers and hamilton are the same people hating on the mean girls musical movie. It's like they want to enjoy the songs but don't want to be seen supporting musical theater or don't want to have anything to do with it outside of 15 second sounds on tiktok.

I wholeheartedly agree with the takes especially about how little knowledge studio executives have of their supposed target demographic. They are playing it safe rather than targeting the fans head on -- they're approaching it traditionally from a perspective where the film must cater to all audiences for it to be considered a hit. That's just a bit of an archaic rationale on their part and that hesitation is no thanks to the stigma that surrounds being in and into theater. They're banking on controversy and hot takes surrounding the film than showcasing it for what it really is: a movie musical. But hey, maybe they'll see the light in the next upcoming trailers they will release 🤷♀️

i'm a musical theatre freak and always have been i'm an "elder millennial" lol and what i've seen is it's cyclical. a while back when that show glee was on musical theatre blew up for a few years etc etc and then it sort of "died" to the mainstream and now tik tok has brought it back and i think it will continue the cycle! the means girls musical is one of my faves and it was odd to see them not have any music in the trailer 😮 but i digress !

Think also of the number of people who have dug up Les Mis audition videos for Sam Riegel of Critical Role or Galen Matarazzo in Les Mis People LOVE to look at hatchling talent from performers who go onto great things, especially Broadway performers but also high school musicals, American Idol, Star Search (think Britney Spears when she lost at age eleven or whatever she was). Also social media is responsible for all the people who never heard of Liv and Maddy now checking it out because of your CZcams channel. I learned about Heathers the Musical FROM THIS CHANNEL (Sam and Ryan) and now I know all permutations of it and versions and have great love for the cast album. It goes in all directions.

I’ve seen people fighting for their lives in the comments on tiktok trying to defend the mean girls movie from people who thinks that its a remake from the movie, its so sad cause it has been a long time waiting for this movie😢
i know! I'm really excited and it sucks seeing something that means a lot to me getting hate for. Especially because people don't understand it or aren't willing to open their horizons to a different take on mean girls. The trailer literally states that this new movie is not going to be for everyone. It's more modern and it bothers me that people can't handle a different telling of the story. I could go into a whole rant about why I think the movie musical is getting so much hate but i'll stop it here.

I do agree with the general take both from the comments and the video that with social media, fandom culture and being a fan in general is becoming more accepted. A lot of people join and create a community and pretty much anything can end up becoming “cool” hahaha. It’s not embarassing anymore to simply _be a fan_. Freaking out about stuff can actually get you more views, more clout and more followers. As you said, what used to be private and shameful is now becoming something collective, simple emotion and fun.
Welcome back. I missed your on point vlogs. Well the strike is over and will there be an announcement that Ryan is in a new musical? That we will get a review of Merrily We Role Along or the new Rob Madge when it opens in NYC. I enjoyed the Mean Girls trailer, except it lacked music.

Yeah musicals give me life and there’s truly something really magical about going to see musicals live if you are able to. And you’d be surprised how mostly affordable some tickets can go for for a national tour of a Broadway musical. Like for instance going to see Beetlejuice in the city near me and the seats I got in the balcony were $35 each. I looked at when Hairspray is coming and those seats the lowest is $28 so that’s not too shabby at all. And it also depends on what day/time you go too. Sometimes you can save $5 or $10 or even $20 or more dollars just by going another day. Or even get the same seat or different seats at a cheaper cost. I seen mezzanine tickets on some days are $80 and then other days the rear orchestra is that much. I’ve sat in the front row of the orchestra for as little as $70 something dollars and as much as $120 or $130 something. It just depends on the musical and such. So if any of you reading this ever want to see a musical live and you haven’t yet keep what I’ve set above in mind because you very well might be able to afford to do so. Especially if you happen to know 14 other people besides yourself to go with you because then you get a discount since it would atleast be 15 of you.
I’m excited for Mean Girls the movie musical as well as the movie of Wicked the musical. Love both musicals so much.

I'm excited for mean girls so much BUT not gonna deny, my role is gonna tone down my excitement. Still am SUPER HYPED! I'M AM BELTING WERE DO YOU BEON WHEN IT COMES TO STREAMING! It did teach me to not count lines though because Kevin g would be really good with out knowing he has 9 lines.

Definitely in Peru is a lot harder to enter the theater community because it is not something pretty common or popular in schools or in general. I knew a bit about the culture before because I became fan of les mis and hamilton in 2016 but that was it, until tiktok in the pandemic introduced me to heathers and dear evan hansen and I started researching and learning about other musicals or aspects of theater so it really helped me a lot because it made it more accessible. Now I have a 25 hour long playlist of songs from different musicals that I listen all the time.

Hey Sam and Ryan! I recently got into Starkid, more specifically the Hatchetfield trilogy (The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musicals, Black Friday, Nerdy Prudes Must Die). I was wondering if you guys had seen any of them and/or given your thoughts whether on the productions or the company and associates in general. Great stuff as always! I’m somewhat excited for Mean Girls. I have the album (it’s good but not one of my faves, I revisit Heathers MUCH more) and Renee Rapp reprising her role has me intrigued as well as the new cast. If they keep the musical element out of future trailers leading up to release, I predict even some fans of the original are going to be divided and those people could potentially feel bamboozled. That being said, I intend to give it the benefit of the doubt and see it in the theater, purely just for the performances and choreography involved in some of the numbers. Just my 2c. Glad to see you guys!

sadly, what you are saying about how musical theater it’s not usually true. as i teen right now, something’s are better. but mostly, we are still ridiculed for it. it’s better than i has been in the last 15 years, but it’s still horribly toxic, especially as other activities (sports) usually get praised, but thank u for touching on it. so happy for u to be back!!!❤❤❤❤❤

I love musical theater honestly but when I go on tiktok and see people posting something individual from a musical and there banging it out it's like I just wanna know if they evan know were that's from like for example the Veronica open the door Trend like that was on my fyp sm and I always wanted to know if they evan knew that was from heathers like Its annoying how they post but don't know were it's actually from. They pick individual parts and make it a trend witch I find super frustrating also ily guys sm💕

Me watching the Dear Evan Hansen movie. I recognize the story is problematic but it really hit me the first time I heard it, I still revisit it frequently and saw it on Tour. At the end of the day, I’m glad the movie exists even if I have notes.

Was just thinking yesterday it’s been 84yrs since the last Sam and Ryan
I was very lucky with my school that I wasn’t bullied as a theatre kid (I was bullied for other reasons but never for theatre lol) It wasn’t cool by any means to be a theatre kid but we had a fantastic theatre program for a public school, all thanks to our amazing director, so it wasn’t as looked down on as a lot of other schools. Even the theatre friends I had from the other high schools in my city had issues with bullying from being a theatre kid. It didn’t make sense to me.

The jaded, curmudgeon side of me says leaving out the music - & actual words "the musical" - from the new Mean Girls movie is probably related to the Wal-Mart marketing campaign featuring the cast from them original movie. Maybe we need a musical multiverse for us all to be happy?
I think Encanto really helped with musical theater rising up from the ashes again. The songs were made to be on a stage but in animation form. Surface pressure and we don’t talk about bruno was a way to be theatrical and fun.
Agree with sam on Hamilton. It did create access to theatre and showed people it is not just show tunes and there is variety that anyone can watch and listen to.

i always loved musical movies, i think it started with descendents (im 18 now and at the time i guess i was 10 maybe) and hsm and all the others but i never got the chance to know musical theater bc i'm from a little city in brazil, i didnt know what broadway is until idk five years ago, but i didnt like to see in bootleg so i literally started to liked it and being kind of a musical theater nerd in 2021 when i watched the frozen bootleg.
so idk i think the lack of accessibility is something they need to work it
real. something i hate tho are the people who mock or "hate" musical theatre and yet hop on the musical trends STRICTLY for views knowing its from a musical. the hate lately with the new mean girls musical, people complaining abt it saying "ugh why they making a musical" ITS BEEN ONE FOR YEARS GIRL. then they use this is modern feminism on tiktok. it hurts my brain. THE HIPPORCRACY!. but yes the others who just dip their toe in it and not mock it are good
Unfortunately, the movie adaptation of the musical "The Color Purple" is another example of a movie that flopped recently.
I’m pretty sure they have test audiences for trailers and I’m guessing that the non musical trailer just performed better - which is a little sad tbh

I like this older musical called Taboo it was I think loosely based on the life of Boy George. Love that guy, great play wish it would have done better!
I think theatre has become more popular however I still fun I’m made fun of for liking it and for doing it x
