    Grew up in that area haven't been back in many years but I could tell you many stories about diving for world record abalone living on the beach in the summer building Driftwood houses and staying at Big flats back when there was just the cabin. Mario Machi was my 6th grade school teacher he wrote The emperor's hostages. The Machi's have quite a history there in shelter cove. Mario survived the batan March and was an amazing storyteller. The Lost Coast is truly some of the last wild coastline along California.

      Oh wow! Yeah, someone mentioned the abalone,
      It’s still a thing. Wow, the Bataan death March eh? My Grand Father fought in world war 2. He said he killed 3 enemy soldiers with a coconut when he ran out of ammo. When he passed away in 2011, my Aunt brought his certificate of participation. I posted about it in an Instagram post. Here it is: instagram.com/p/COOx4XJMnQ2/?

      @@JonDZ_Adventuring no the abalone is no more. 95 percent of the bull kelp Forest along the California coast is gone that's what the abalone fed on. I don't think I will ever see abalone come back in my lifetime so sport divers can pursue it.

I love hitting dunes...playing in a vast roadless area is fun, but I think that little underlying sense of danger is part of the appeal as well, haha.

    Driving on Usal Beach isn't allowed and you guys are lucky there wasn't a ranger - sorry if it's nitpicky but every instance of abuse gives the CA coastal commission even more ammunition to close the beaches to all driving. We've been struggling with them and Oceano dunes for a while. Honestly kind of a shame what's going on up there with the kooks. Incredibly disrespectful of the environment and of fellow campers to have loud music and shoot off fireworks. The only places you can drive on the beach in CA are Pismo, crescent city dunes, eel river, and Chadburne gulch if anyone is wondering :D all great places

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring
      @JonDZ_Adventuring  Před 3 lety +2

      We actually stayed on trail except for the recovery of the Tacoma. Choosing to recover a stuck vehicle, that shouldn’t have been in that area, was the lesser of two evils. Quite honestly, the trail was not marked (at least, not noticeably) prohibiting driving on the beach. Not unless someone took down the signs. If there’s a sign for no fireworks, there should be a sign for “no driving on the beach”. Glad we didn’t make any offenses though. I personally just use Gaia GPS to help me stay on trail. I wish I would have known about this. My CZcams channel is all about helping educate people on dos and don’ts.

    Hey. It’s the future calling. Just a heads up: the Bunker boards don’t work as well as MaxxTrax on ice/snow.
    The tough thing about Usal is several sites still show it as okay to drive on, making it basically the only beach in NorCal you can drive/camp on, so it’s always super packed with… ‘the Pismo crowd’ who stand out like a sore thumb and ruin the tranquility. I really like beach camping but save the parties for the dunes. Meh.

      We went there on a weekend. The camping area is a big open place, so there wasn't that much privacy, but there are other camping spots in the woods. I'm from Southern California, I'm use to sunny beaches. The Northern California coast seems to be a very foggy place. I wouldn't have great expectations, but if the weather is just right, this place could be a treat! I really enjoyed the hike.
