Well here is a thought: Bad writers love a clean slate. Good writers love a set of restrictions. Think about it. Pressure creates diamonds, after all.
This definitely seems to be a trend, the biggest thing these writers complain about is being bound to established canon/rules with these properties even when they aren't being explicitly hostile to the IP
@@a.m.2066 I think they find the lore and parameters of a franchise intimidating, so they try to get rid of it. it's why Disney, for example, declared the whole Star Wars expanded universe non-canon.
Working within parameters is more work, you have to research and you could make mistakes. So, they just go for a clean slate. The original work is then usually devalued in some way. ("Tolkien was racist/colonialist/whatever anyway!")
@@catriona_drummond I doubt it's that "complicated". I think good writers are rare these days, and aren't participating in these billion dollar budget blockbuster spectacles where it's just soulless consumption year after year.
The proper writers are probably out there somewhere creating true art, that is actually "brave" these days. There is no room for true creative liberty, if you are restricted by political correctness and the tyranny of ignorant fools. It takes strength and bravery to try something truly new. It's cowardly, mindless and lazy to bow down to the woke status quo. It takes no effort. It is tried and not only accepted, but also demanded by producers, sponsors, advertisers, the social climate of Hollywood as well as the woke mob.

Funny story, but apparently a lecturer at a university was so pissed off at the ROP that he insisted that his students go to their local bookstore and buy the original LOTR Red Book and accompanying Tolkien works.
I've actually started re-reading the books because of the RoP. :) Much better use of my hour each night!
It's also dependent on the individual so may find Tolkien's work dry and full of wandering of the point for several pages. Others may enjoy the more simplistic writing of ROP - easy assessable - it may also make people go and read Tolkien using ROP as a gateway entry to Tolkien wider works. It depends on the individual and their friend circle etc etc.
@@Arhimith depends some people don't like the Hobbit and will find other entry levels - gatekeeping is an issue as well - "Only one way is the right way" not the case people fall into fandoms from different sources be it book, film or TV series. The name is enough to perk peoples interests, regardless of how shit the show was and they will find out when they read the original source material.
Incredibly enough ROP helped me get through most of the 1st book of LOTR. Bombadil used to always get me, then I pushed through.
Sometimes the characters tell lore and backstories mentioning names and places, and ROP actually helped me in those passages as I now could visualize Elendil, Isuldur, Celebrimbor, Gil-Galad, Eregion, Numenór, and other people and places that they mention and coming into LOTR for the first time may just look like lists of names and places.
So the show, despite being terrible, can actually help some people with these things, and that's why it's important to respect canon.
@@Mark-nh2hs I mean... Nobody was saying that people HAVE to read The Hobbit to get into LoTR. The Fellowship of The Ring has an entire section basically explaining who hobbits are, what the shire is like, and enough context about Bilbo's adventure that you literally don't need to have read it as long as you read the section "On Hobbits".
As a creative the biggest joy I get is when I create something that resonates with the fans of that chosen franchise.
To actively go out of your way to create something that only appeals to yourself and will upset fans is just horrible and shows more about the type of character the people in charge of these shows/movies/comics are.
Yes, it's very self indulgent (and also hypocritical) to make something only for yourself and then expect/demand others to like it.

How To Train Your Dragon is also VERY different from the books, but it's still profoundly beautiful in its own way! You can tell the team love what they're writing and working on, unlike much of the used dishwater they call writing nowadays.
I found the book series to be more enjoyable than the movies.

Them not hiring fans of the source material sounds ridiculous to the outside observer, but there's a reason for it. They know that no true fan would ever stand for or be complicit in their cultural vandalism.
I’m ok with making some changes to a story to adapt it to film, but when it’s obvious that the writers don’t care about source material, that’s a big problem
I think the ability to adapt another's work is really underated skill & deserves more praise as look at game of thrones amazing adaption but when they try to write their own stories...... See last season.....

If you mean "Why should it be like printing money?", you've got hardcore fans who are super excited about a thing, so as long as you align with their interests they'd be happy to give you their money. If you mean "why are modern Hollywood writers afraid of a bit of hard work?", I'm not sure either, but the fact that they ARE afraid of work bleeds through the screen nowadays...
The thing I'm noticing is: They don't even care about the canon they create. Look at JJ and Rian... both ignored the other's work and were only interested in making their movie. If it didn't fit with what came before, oh well.

I heard it was Kathleen Kennedy who decided to have the show revolve around Kenobi protecting Leia instead of Luke. So it’s her fault that it went so far off the rails because GIRL POWER!! had to come before everything else.
@@neillindgren8992 actually there was a way to make that work, that involved Crimson Dawn, making this at least 2 to 3 season series with Vader having a cameo in 1 a fight with Maul in 2 and an actual story that made sense!

They could have also had a Kenobi show work if they just had an inquisitor track down Kenobi and/or Luke (maybe even have it be Reva, though hopefully a version of Reva that made a bit more sense), and Ben would have to stop them before they reached Luke or reported back to the Empire for reinforcements (thus getting around Darth Vader showing up, which though potentially cool, is always problematic lore-wise, or Luke learning about the Jedi or Sith before “A New Hope”).
Honestly, being a fan of the source material tends to offer you more ideas of what to do with a character. Like, Project Itoh - god rest his soul - was a fan of the series who worked on the novelization of MGS4. And the thematic work he pulled from that game and expanded upon? Impressed the hell out of Kojima. Because while Itoh didn't carry the Beauty and Beast Unit into the novelization, his choices like having Otacon as the narrator and restoring cut details like Johnny's grandpa (the Johnny from MGS3) appearing at the wedding scene? Showed that he not only cared, but understood the source in ways that showed how much he cared.
This is true however, not all fans have the same view - changes to a character (as in expanding on them) or a weak plot point you will get some fans kicking off over it as it's not "true" to the Lore etc etc. Fans of a Show as writers can do the same amount of damage to a show as those who hate the source material.

@@Mark-nh2hs which goes back to what he actually said. Someone who is a fan can cause problems which is to say it is a possibility. It's something that can happen, but someone who hates a source material will as in it's a guarantee. It is practically nearly a law of physics that if you hate something you will destroy it because you hate it.
I also get the point Mark is making about fans having the potential to fuck up carrying on the legacy, if they have control. I'm a Homestuck fan, and Post-Canon was our TLJ. Not to mention Snake Solutions LLP decided "we're gonna abuse the fact that some people in the fandom are saying racist shit on reddit to conflate all criticisms with bigotry."
Speaking of them, it was also darkly funny how so much Anti-Semetic shit got into the Post-Canon era under the "SS."
The problem is… These writers are doing exactly what they were hired to do.
Their job isn’t to please the audience. Their job is to please the people who hired them and get paid. They are clearly doing just that.
Any one of us could have come up with an amazing storyline/narrative/script for these IP’s. Especially in hindsight.
It’s the filmmakers and show runners who are to blame. And the community that finances these productions.

Shifting the blame onto the customer misses a fundamental problem: Many of these writers have a political agenda and hate Canon, because it prevents them from turning a story into propaganda. Also in the ESG Corporate system: many of these are funded by stakeholders, not the fans. Also lets not forget the Human Resources division doing stuff like this:

Look at this, this is a politcal Commissar dictating how a story can be written. It's communist. The problem is this: The HR lady gets to decide the corporate culture and have power over devs, and the culture most corpos have now? full of communists in middle and high positions.

The women are super strong, macho, always in control, smarter than the men, don't need a man, or in short - they're fake men.

Cinematic films were preempted by newsreels and propaganda. Television is punctuated with advertisements.
But paid subscriptions are commercial free. The messaging and the programming must be incorporated directly into the content.
This was the big lesson learned from the experiments known as HBO/etc. and Netflix/etc. and as we all know, that’s why it’s called “programming”. Sociopolitical engineering has always been the driving force behind entertainment …else it wouldn’t be allowed.
Also "Fan" writers of a show can also ruin it as well it works both ways 👍
I listened to many fan fiction pieces about Rurouni Kenshin; usually they expand an aspect of canon stories, or they emphasize the situation this or that character were in. Most of it was interesting and well done, it actually helped flesh out the original series. Similarly with some of the Star Trek fan episodes or podcast stories, they built upon the canon of that world, they didn't try to replace it. Real fans like the canon... people who don't like canon ARE NOT FANS.
The issue falls apart when Fans become obsessed with their or others fan fiction and clouds their judgement. Saying real fans love canon - not always true if something is added to canon which fans dislike doesn't mean they are not fans just do not like that particular aspect of the canon. I grew up with classic Dr Who when NuWho started added rubbish and bent the rules of canon I switched off and was never a fan of NuWho - but I'm still a fan of Dr Who as I appreciate it's canon up until they messed around with it.
It's less about "are you a fan?" and more about "are you willing to put in the work to understand the world and its characters?" A hater is not willing to do that, but neither is someone convinced that his or her own imagination alone is just as good as a trained storyteller who put care into learning that craft and extensive research into crafting a particular story, character, and/or world.

Something I cynically love is the longstanding "logic," "But it's OLD! I want to write something NEW!"
Well, then WRITE something new! We people have played nice for so long that we forget there are plenty of times you need to firmly and permanently say, "NO." Besides, even their own argument proves their false intentions. If they truly wanted to write something new, then they'd come up with a new character, and new setting, and so on. But no.
They want the rewards of long, hard work without actually work. They want the praise and accolades for "Being so clever" without the risk of failing to create something else.
And most of all, they want to shove their cultist beliefs into everything and everyone. It's not just that they want their own creations to be on high. They need the "blasphemous" and "hateful" materials gone. Not just discredited -- gone.
This past decade in particular has provided a wealth of proof these "activists" can not create anything worthwhile. They have been spoiled and programmed to be angry and destructive. I level this challenge to anyone. If you want to change the world, then devote yourself to getting the finances, resources, or whatever it takes to join a genuine humanitarian outreach like the Peace Corps, Habitat for Humanity, 8 Billion Trees, and so on. Spend two years with them first, see the people hurting the most, help them, and then come back and preach.
Besides, if someone does that, they will have a wealth of something new to write about, no question.
Chris Avellone who wrote what I think is the greatest Star Wars story ever told, Knights of the Old Republic 2, never liked Star Wars. He was frustrated by the black and white tone of Star Wars while the Jedi displayed hypocrisy - something like that. But when Avellone was working at Obsidian and was told he's going to be lead writer on such a beloved franchise, he absorbed all this material over like two three weeks. He watched the movies, read books, read comic books and played games and from that seed of respect, he developed a admiration from those two weeks. He then filled Knights of the Old Republic 2 with his views of the jedi and sith and dynamics of the universe and his perspective created a tone that I think is so rich.
But the point is, when he got that job as lead writer, he put his personal feelings to one side and was determined to do the best job possible. I'd say he even predicted the future in a lot of ways because Knights of the Old Republic 2 came out a year before Revenge of the Sith yet there's a few things in the game that kind of subtly get referenced and wrapped up in Revenge of the Sith - far too subtly to be intentional I think.
Respect for the source material is very important. Knights of the Old Republic could have so easily been like any of these modern rubbish "adaptations". But it turned into the best Star Wars story ever told, if you ask me.

The fact that these writers in the past I am sure were making fun of nerds and books etc but when they saw that there are lots of people care about it they saw dollar signs so they acted as they were part of it all along without knowing anything about it.
Remember, Peter Jackson was from the UK not from Hollywood. Denis Villeneuve is from Canada, not Hollywood. Currently some of the K-dramas are better than what Hollywood produces and they have much lower budgets to work with.
I'm old so for me, the disappointment was about Star Trek rather than Star Wars, but they did essentially the same thing to Star Trek as what happened to Star Wars. In the mid-1990s there was a campaign called Save Trek, people wanted J J Abrams gone and soap operas like DS9 canceled. The studios didn't listen.

What's ironic is that Tony Gilroy, who is not a Star Wars fan, made a much better written and directed show than supposed "fans" JJ Abrams, Rian Johnson, Debora Chow and John Favreau.
Still, I would have preferred that Favreau was put in charge of the ST way, way, way before the likes of Abrams and Johnson. I doubt Johnson even likes Star Wars given what he did in his movie, conversely Abrams is a black hole of imagination and originality. While Favreau is far from infallible, Mando Season 1 and 2 at least demonstrate he got the heart of the universe more than others.

The highest praise I've seen for Andor was that "it's not like Star Wars." That should tell you all you need to know why Star Wars fans and the Fandom Menace didn't watch it.
It can be good, excellent even, but if it says Star Wars on the tin but isn't Star Wars inside, it deserves to be criticized.
The Witcher is a Polish story, You CANNOT play off a horse getting killed as a joke in a Polish story.
We are talking about the country that when their first dictionary was produced horse was defined as "everyone knows what this is." We are talking about the country famous for it's cavalry. We are talking about the people where it was once said "a Pol without a horse is like a body without a soul."
Horses are freaking important to Polish culture.

And as was said, these writers view world from San Francisco and Los Angeles, these people never met anyone outside their circle jerk of hyperclass rich kids, who's only life experience was high school and university. Meanwhile Sapkowski was a professor, who travelled from Poland to Germany and then to Britain. Cameron was truck driver who was in South America, Lucas was engineer in Vietnam war, JRRT was veteran from Somme, Gluchovsky worked as news writer in Russian federation, Stan Lee lived in New York during crisis, Rowling was member of a movement, Gene Roddenberry was policeman in LA and more. These good writers had life experience and stories to tell.
You probably won't see this, Shad, but I really hope you see what's been going on with the casting for the upcoming Percy Jackson and The Olympians Series. Rick Riordan has seriously gone woke to the point that now he's raceswapping the characters in his stories, including Annabeth, because his first book series wasn't "inclusive" enough. Imma be honest, I've never seen Wheel of Time nor have I seen Lord of the Rings to care about what's currently happening there. Percy Jackson however, is something I care about. And I really hate that the very same author I idolized was the one that ruins it. Though if you've never seen Percy Jackson, or that you don't really care, it's fine. Just keep scrolling.
George Lucas: A young lady name Kathleen Kennedy, who was a pupil of mine until she turned to Disney - helped Disney tear down and destroy the the legacy. She betrayed and murdered Star Wars.

I prefer the comics compare to the TV Show, the comics IMO shows how the superheroes similar to our current day celebrities.
I liked Season 1, later season I tuned out.
Starlight in the comics, she was like the new actress from a small town who went to Hollyweird and was very naive about that industry and later she discovered the dark side of it.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1990 was a great adapatation. Had the gritty dark feel of the lesser known comics but kept the right amount of humour to appeal to fans of the cartoon series. Also The Crow. The early 90s did well in Adaptations :)

As a WGA writer who’d loved to be staffed on a show - most staff writers want to be staffed for one reason - the paycheck - they just want to be on a show - ANY show because it’s a job. And the system typically works based on nepotism - you have a friend and you bring them in on a project - it has virtually nothing to do with if someone is qualified to work on a specific type of show - it’s handing out a paycheck to someone you like. Yes, there is the odd CONSULTANT for shows to help the writers be realistic, but not always. I personally always do a ton of research so I enter a situation fully educated, but I’m in the minority because I come from features and create my own series to pitch,because staff writers are, by definition, people who are choosing the structure of a corporate job over being self motivated to create and do work on their own.
Rewatched the first Blade movie a couple nights ago. It still holds up.

Hollywood has always been like this, most movies that have been adapted in the past from books or comics have almost always strayed from the source material. You have to understand that the powers that be in Hollywood view these projects in a different way than the way we look at them based on lore and the source material. They look at it as an investment and or opportunity to execute a "new vision" even if it is based on an existing work. Stanley Kubricks "The Shining" is a perfect example, where the director had his own vision for the story which deviated from that of Stephen King. But the big difference here is that a lot of these older adaptations were made by talented directors whose vision was entertaining and satisfying even if it wasn't faithful to the source material. Today, most of these directors and writers are not as talented and only are being given their positions as part of some corporate ESG mandate and the results are nowhere near as good as you got from talented directors and writers who had a compelling story of their own even if it was based on something else. This is why Peter Jackson is an anomaly for how he pushed to produced Lord of the RIngs and stay true to the source material as that is not normally how Hollywood works. And technically most of these projects are just designed to be annoying dog whistles like someone deliberately scraping their nails on a chalkboard to get your attention by being objectionable on purpose.

Often they wanted to do their own projects. but couldn't get a green light without an established franchise at least tied in name to the project.

I would say another instance of where the adaptation is better than the source material is How To Train Your Dragon.

The only movies I am looking forward to are mostly Japanese based shows; Mario movie with direct Nintendo influence, Legendary Godzilla, and straight up Japanese stuff with Godzilla 2023.
These New TV and MOVIE people are Non creative people that only get credit by literally stealing creative ideas and making them their own... SAD

With video games, gameplay is a big concern: it's the main aspect of the game (outside of purely narrative games), so sometimes you have to sacrifice canon to make the game more interesting and develop game mechanics. Or, you know, for balance (probably the biggest canon-breaker, balance).
Movies don't have any of these concerns (aside of direct book adaptations, which come with their own problems). There's no gameplay or balance in films, just story, art and tech. You can do whatever you want as long as you've got the money. There's just no excuse for breaking canon.
A Jedi gets hit by a blaster and survives? Video game: yeah, sure, it's a game with HP and stats and being one-hit-killed by everything isn't fun. Film: what the hell, Jedi are not invulnerable you know?

In terms of movie adaptation, as a general rule, everything from Mark Millar is better in film form.
Kickass (although the second one was meh), Kingsman, Logan and Wanted, although starting with an interesting "what if?, premise, which is the main strength of Millar (if not the only one), always end up being poorly written and with a generally stupid or lazy ending.
All the movie adaptations, despite being of varying quality as films, are always superior to the comics.

As much as I appreciate Beau DeMayo (the Witcher writer) confirming something that the fans have long suspected, he is also responsible for one the worst episodes in the entire show.

They destroyed Star Trek cannon on the very first episode, and they didn't stop. We got Klingons when and where we shouldn't have, Ferengi when we didn't know they existed, and Vulcans that were not Vulcans.

To be fair to the lack of monster hunting thing in the Witcher tho, that's like s running theme throughout the books. As time goes on in the main story of the Witcher books, Gerald does less and less moster hunting, until he and everyone else questions wether he's really a Witcher anymore. So that's pretty accurate. Saying that tho, thats about the only thing they got right.

Blade Runner (film) vs Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep (book). The film was very different from the book, and I think on balance better.
For me the Book was better, despite watching the movie first. But the important thing there is the care taken to really make it seem like the right world, sell the same story through a different medium, and put some really good talent in all the right places - it makes the movie a real classic and a class act as you can really see the influence of the original source and the quality production throughout. In the same way the Lord of The Rings movies (or the really good BBC audio book) made lots of mostly little changes but with such care and attention to the details so those changes feel like they fit in the same world.

You keep referring to the witcher show but still haven't read the books. The games were great because they respected the lore and setting and characters while making a sequel to them in a way. The show was supposed to adapt the books but what it did to them honestly makes the wheel of time show look almost acceptable in comparison.

Restrictions are what defines a story. To be unchained makes it something else entirely. Especially the first entry, and it should progress naturally.
If they aren't fans I think thats fine no reason you need to be a fan or have experience/connection with the source material before taking on the project. Its when they hire people who actively dislike the source material like 343 did for example.
Quality vs quantity is something that consumers look at. If you make a lot of trash you will be known for trash and when you make something good nobody will care because the rest of your stuff is crap. If you make quality work and then makes something bad people will still return knowing that you will improve your work for the next time.

The problem with the witcher show is they focused too much on the sorceresses. Yen being a great example. Ciri i didnt mind as in the books shes a main character so it makes sense.
The show is called the witcher aka geralt. Hes the star of the show yet he felt like a side character at times.
It would have been a much better show if it focused on geralt monster hunting mostly and have the rest, like ciri being special etc, as something that happens while geralts doing his thing.
They also need to lay back on the woke. The world is too multi racial, to the point where it makes no sense. This isnt modern day. Your not gonna have all these people mixing when the world is basically based on poland.
Also the insane focus on what the womens sorcerer lodge is doing. Its boring and you know its there to push the girl power narrative.
Nothing has been bastardized for the showrunners agenda worse than Wheel of Time. The level of contempt Rafe Judkins and Jennifer Salke have for Jordan's books and the fans is off the scale.
