  • Trudy confesses that she wasn't the perfect person Monk always believed she was. In college, before they met, she had an adulterous affair with her law studies professor - Judge Ethan Rickover (Craig T. Nelson) - that resulted in her becoming pregnant…
Monk is streaming now on Peacock: pck.tv/3JuixBg
From Season 8, Episode 16 'Mr. Monk and the End: Part 2' - An investigation draws Monk back to the place where he first heard about Trudy's murder - but his fate has been unfortunately sealed as he retraces his steps on that fateful day.

Adrian Monk (Emmy®-winner Tony Shalhoub) was once a rising star with the San Francisco Police Department, legendary for using unconventional means to solve the department's most baffling cases. But after the tragic and still-unsolved murder of his wife, Trudy, the devastated Monk becomes obsessive-compulsive. His psychological disorder has caused him to develop an abnormal fear of virtually everything: germs, heights, crowds... even milk. Monk's condition costs him his job, but he's back as a police consultant despite the unique challenges he encounters in his everyday life. These challenges lead Monk to hire a personal nurse, Sharona Fleming (Bitty Schram), who is always there to offer her assistance, even with the simplest of tasks (like organizing his sock drawer). Her less-than-subtle prodding keeps the "defective detective" on track in his investigations, as well as in his efforts to convince Captain Stottlemeyer (Ted Levine) to allow him to return to the force.

In a twisted, ironic kind of way, it was Monks love for Trudy that kept him from knowing the truth. He was holding onto the past so much that it stopped him from living appropriately in the present (no pun intended). Even when he opens the present he doesn't want the angelic image he's painted of her in his mind to be corrupted by what she's about to confess. Very sad but beautiful at the same time

It's true, throughout the show we're led to believe she's this perfect person but every image of her is filtered through Monk's memories. When we finally hear Trudy talking directly, not in a flashback, she confesses that she actually did stuff she's not proud of and that she's not perfect but that she really did truly love Adrian.

the biggest flaw in monk. love can make people do dumb things. if monk had just opened that gift years ago, he'd not only find closure a lot sooner, but he may have been able to be a detective again. at the very least, he finally was able to move on later and make true steps in curing himself.

@@thecursor1 And what a powerful statement that Monk is able to love so fully and freely something born of a mistake, an imperfection, an illicit indiscretion...Molly. For most of his life, Monk abhorred that which was flawed or contained errors or mistakes. He idealized Trudy and saw her as perfect and unimpeachable and then he learns that she was carrying the burden of something so heavy...that was mired in erroneous thinking and behavior and that turned out so terribly wrong in so many ways.

It’s not just the clue of who killed Trudy being under Monk’s nose for 12 years that makes this so shocking, but also fact that the woman that the audience has been shown to be practically perfect was hiding such a devastating secret that makes this all the more tragic. The worst part about all of this is that, if Trudy didn’t hide it, absolutely *nothing* would’ve changed between them.

As a matter of fact, everything would. Had she told Andrian the truth he would have solved the midwife's murder and caught Rickover. So she wouldn't have died
And also, she would have probably met her daughter since Andrian realized the motive for the murders is that she is alive

    • @Jonathan83X
      @Jonathan83X Před 2 lety +42

@@user-mx4is4fx3c Possibly, but considering how ruthless Rickover was at getting rid of loose ends, it's also very possible he would've had Monk killed too once he found out he was onto him. I mean, he had two people setting up a car bomb for Trudy. They could have easily made one for Monk's car too if necessary. Rickover was very resourceful after all for a villain.
Also, there's a good chance Monk wouldn't have believed Trudy about her having an affair. You got to remember Monk's mindset was distorted when it came to Trudy. He thought she was angelic and perfect. So, in a tragic sort of way, her death might have been the only way Monk would finally take off the rose colored glasses of his beloved late wife and see the truth for what it was, no matter how ugly it seemed.

It's also such an interesting commentary, whether intended or not, on how many women are often conditioned to think. "It's probably nothing. I'm probably being paranoid..." vs assertive confidence of "I know I'm right!" Encouraging men to be self assured can lead to some arrogant moments, as Monk embodies well, but encouraging women to be humble can lead to self doubt to the point that they place their lives at risk. Both confidence and humility are important, but going to extremes with either can lead to negative consequences.

This series, which brought us both so much joy and delight, has been hard for me to rewatch without her there to share it, but I have done so as a way of reconnecting with her (if that makes any sense at all) and honoring what it was that we shared while watching it together.
The last four episodes are some of the best in the series, and the last two in particular are especially important. Please, take my word on this....your loss (for which I am deeply sorry) can never be reversed, but those two episodes will help you find a different perspective that will help you work through some of the pain and perhaps even find some healing. The most tragic thing is that all the answers he had been looking for were right there in his house all along, in plain sight no less, and his own weakness was what kept him away from the answers for so long. I love that in this episode they portrayed this troubled and usually weak minded man with the appropriate murderous rage that any man would have had after that kind of discovery.

The ways her imperfections made her such a caring, loving person cuz she knows what its like to make a mistake or feel guilty. Even in flashbacks, we never see Trudy being anything special, she's special for Monk, and that's what made his love for her so pure.

I think Monk's memory of Trudy was part of his 'problem' for a long time. He'd put her on a pedestal and made her into a kind of saintly figure in his own mind. We all like to remember our loved ones in the best possible way when we lose them, but Monk always did things in an exaggerated way and he made his version of Trudy into a near perfect person, to such an extent that no one could realistically live up to that fantasy. Everyone has flaws and secrets. I think Monk's eyes were opened in the finale, he'll always love Trudy but I think he was finally able to let go just a little and carry on with his life after being in grief for so long.
I've always felt that Trudy was the MacGuffin of the series and since we as viewers only really 'know' Trudy through Monk's own and heavily biased view, we never really got a true sense of the character until we had moments like these. Reminds me a little of Laura Palmer in the first season of Twin Peaks, she's already dead in the first episode, we only find out about her through other characters and seeing enigmatic pictures, she seems perfect, but there's something darker and quite sad hidden there.

The case that meant the most to him; closest to his hear, he could not solve. Time stood still. At best he could go through the emotions of daily life. But, he was not living.

Disclaimer: I'm not trying to be critical of Trudy. She is darned near a saint.
Primary mistake is sleeping with your teacher when you're a student (note if she were under 18 I would not feel she deserves any of the blame). It's certainly not criminal, but that's not a good life move. Secondary mistake is getting that serious with someone and not realizing they're married. This is primarily a mistake made from a lack of wisdom rather than a lack of morals, but it's still a mistake.
It shows how high a pedestal Monk had placed her on that minor mistakes like that were enough to shatter him.
