8 bit sounds amazing. Definitely my favourite because 16 and 64 sound more complex for sure, but just sound like "lesser" versions of the original while 8 bit in this particular case I think sounds great in it's own way. Don't know if that makes any sense.

That's the Yamaha YM-series audio chip! Sega Genesis was equipped with a 4-operator FM synthesis module. There's an outfit in France that sells a synthesizer called the MegaFM which has 2x of these chips and sounds gnarly as all hell.

If Monkey Island could pull off that title theme on 1 bit PC Speakers, Harder Better Faster Stronger could probably be done fairly well on them too. The genesis sound chip is fine but the SNES' digitized audio capabilities would probably have worked better.
