The movie doesn’t really explain why Harry was so convinced that the stag across the lake was his father. It’s revealed in the book that James, Sirius, Lupin, and Peter were the “Marauders” who created the Marauder’s Map and that Lupin (Moony) would stay at the shrieking shack during a full moon while he was a student at Hogwarts (that’s why people think it’s haunted), so James, Sirius, and Peter trained in secret to become animagi so that they could keep him company. Peter (Wormtail) could become a rat, Sirius (Padfoot) a dog, and James (Prongs) could become a stag.

you know it doesnt make sense how they target him especially though because they feed off happy memories, and as you said, Harry's past is rather unhappy, so surely they would want more happy memories and feed off someone with more rather than going for Harry.
Spoiler incoming do not proceed if you havent finished the series.
Few reasons I can think of is them sensing more than 1 soul in Harry (kind of a spoiler sorry but kept it brief). Them seeing him as closer to getting the dementor's kiss than others bcoz he has less to feed off before the big prize. Harry having stronger happier memories so quality rather than quantity. Harry having worst memories than others so more despair if they suck out all good memories and despair being an environment in which dementors multiply may give them incentive to go for him, so being team players rather than focusing on how much happy memories they get individually.

Sirius Black escaped from Azkaban after seeing Scabbers (Peter Pettigrew) in a Daily Prophet article of the paper Cornelius Fudge gave him in late July 1993, recognising him as his traitorous former friend. By 31 July, Black took advantage of his extreme weight loss to slip through his cell door in his Animagus dog form (which was unregistered, thus the Ministry did not take preparations against) while the Dementors were bringing in his food and swam across the North Sea to find Pettigrew. Black was able to maintain his sanity due to his knowledge of his innocence, a non-happy thought that the Dementors could not take. It was only this that allowed him to maintain his powers to transform, and what made the escape possible.

Fun fact: since you mentioned that they can't keep a Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. That's actually because after Tom Riddle graduated he returned to apply for the position of DADA teacher but Dumbledore turned him down (already knowing he was sketch) and Tom cursed the position so that for one reason or other they would need a new teacher each year. Also that's why snape is potions teacher instead of Defence Against the Dark Arts (Percy Weasley mentions in the first movie that Snape had been "After Quirrell's position for years."

I still think JKR retconned this along the way without giving it much thought (much like most of the stuff she's written on Pottermore and on Twitter since). It was clearly implied in Book I that Quirrel had been doing the job for a while, and that he wasn't actually all that bad before he took that trip to Albania. And are we really supposed to believe that Dumbledore went through the trouble of finding a new DADA teacher every single year for almost 50 years? At that rate, it would've been by far less effort for him to figure out a way to lift the curse (he's supposed to be the most powerful wizard in the world, after all), or at least a loophole to get around it. Like simply cancelling the subject altogether and coming up with a different class with a similar curriculum.

The movie really dropped a bit of HUGE plot detail from the book. The Marauders who wrote the map were Harry's Dad, Lupin, Pettigrew and Sirius when they were in school. The movie didn't mention this at all, but Lupin is the reason why there is a secret passage under the Whomping Willow that leads to the Shrieking Shack. Dumbledore set that up so that when Lupin was in school, he could be locked in the Shrieking Shack when he turned into a werewolf. His three school friends later found this out, Harry's dad James, Sirius and Peter Pettigrew, and so they learned how to turn into animals so they could safely join him on the night he was a werewolf, since werewolves mainly hunt humans. Harry's dad James turned into a stag, a male European deer, which is why Harry's Patronus takes the form of a stag as well.

THIS is why I actually don't like this film (yes, I know I'm in the minority). Cuaron spent too much time with the Whomping Willow scenes, leaving less time for scenes that might have provided these bits of crucial information. Everyone praises his camera work and stuff, but I feel he spent too much time adding in his own things (the shrunken heads) and filming extra scenes that didn't need to be in the film. Rowling put a LOT of information into these books and the films did the audience (especially those who didn't read them) a big disservice by leaving out things like these.

Things not explained in the movie:
Harry was born in 1980, so his first school year was 1991.
He now is in his 3rd year, 1993. In this one he is 13.
Harry's father and his friends were the ones who created the marauder's map. When they found out Lupin was a werewolf, they decided to become animals to be with him during the full moon.
The nicknames that show up in the map are their nicknames, based on each animal:
Moony - Remus Lupin (werewolf/ moony, moon 🌛)
Wormtail - Peter Pettigrew (rat/ wormtail cuz rats have hairless skinny tails, like a worm)
Padfoot- Sirius Black (dog/ Padfoot cuz dogs have soft paws)
Prongs- James Potter (stag/ prongs cuz stags have pointy sharp horns)
Lupin suffered most of his life because he is a werewolf since age 5.
Lupin's father tried to imprison a dangerous werewolf called Fenrir Greyback. Greyback got mad at Lupin's dad for trying to arrest him and went to his house on full moon and waited.
When he transformed, he got inside the house and attacked little 5 year old Lupin. Then Lupin became a werewolf too. (You only turn into werewolf if they bite/scratch you in WOLF form, if they attack you in *human* form you wont turn. Only get a few symptoms. Like eating raw/undercooked meat)
And, yes, Greyback attacked little Lupin on purpose as revenge against his father. This character likes attacking little children and turning them on purpose.
Not just the transformation is very hard and painful, but the magical community treats werewolves like evil dirty monsters. Some of them are evil like Greyback, but Lupin is not! He's sweet and kind.
But he can't get a job because of his condition cuz people have huge hatred towards werewolves. Dumbledore was the first to employ him this whole time. I love Remus Lupin. He is one of my favourites 🥺🖤
Ps: the evil werewolf, Fenrir Greyback, will show up in future movies. I don't think they call him by his name, but he is there.

Dementors feed on good feelings and emotions and are so attracted to Harry because of the terrible things that have happened to him. Because such terrible things have happened to him, the good feelings and memories seem all that much BETTER in comparison. Along the same train of thought, if they "suck out" all the joy and nice things, Harry is left, as Lupin said it, with true horrors, which is why they affect him so much.

    Alfonso Cuarón did SUCH an amazing job capturing the mood and elevating Harry Potter. Such a shame that so much gets left out to explain really important elements to the more casual fan who has not read the books. But I just love the mood he created with this film and he really allowed the kids to take agency with their characters as well. According to the 20 Year Reunion special, he encouraged them all to wear their uniforms how he felt their characters would wear them as well and there is the infamous 'write me an essay about your character' story in which Dan wrote a page or so and felt it was 'good enough', Rupert didn't do it, and Emma wrote ten pages or something to that degree. It's really a pity he only got to do this film...I think I would have LOVED to see his take on Deathly Hallows ;______;

    - Yes, it was a different actor for Dumbledore, since the previous one sadly passed away after the second movie.
    - Remus Lupin (Moony) Peter Pettigrew (Wormtail), Sirius Black (Padfoot), and James Potter (Prongs), are the ones that created the Marauders map, they all became animagus (one does not choose the animal form, it takes the shape of their "spirit animal"), so they all could be with Lupin every full moon so he didn't felt rejected and left out (werewolves are very critized/discriminated in the wizarding world).
    - The patronus (Expecto Patronum, it comes from latin and means "I expect a protector") takes different shapes, just a shield like Harry did most of this movie, or a full body patronus (it's very hard for a wizard to accomplish this level of the patronus), that takes shape of their spirit animal, in this case, Harry's a stag, just like his father's.

Ron is constantly made to appear as a stupid comic relief. One of the worst things they took away from him is when Snape calls Hermione a know-it-all, Ron stands up and yells at Snape to defend her.
I strongly, strongly recommend jumping back into the books (I thought I had heard that you had read the first one?). The books add so much more to flesh out the characters, build up the world, and expand the universe.

Both Harry and Ron have lines taken away from them and given to Hermione.
In this film Hermione works out what Dumbledore meant by “two lives may be saved” yet in the books it’s Harry.
The scriptwriter admitted that Hermione was his favourite character and to constantly show how intelligent she is he had her work almost everything out. The problem is that in the books she is still very smart but only really book-smart. In this book she is really short tempered due to how much she is doing and she spends hardly anytime with Ron and Harry but they decided to skip on all this to keep her at the forefront of the story.

Dementors were created by a really messed up dark wizard (he also made Azkaban before it was repurposed as a prison), dementors are the souls of muggle sailors from the 17th century he tortured to the point they became nothing but a husk of bad emotion, its why they're drawn to dark memories and emotions

Ange wondering the lifespan of a rat, then going to magical rat was funnier to me since I just watched the Ratatouille commentary with TimotheeReacts
Ice problem. Love the shout out to Iron Man
Angelina (reacting to Sirius and Lupin) : they’re friends?
Billy (reacting to Sirius and Lupin) : are they lovers?

It's never said in the upcomming movies, but in the books Sirius is the one signing the permission form for Harry to go to the village of Hogsmeade for the years after that
Also Neville forgetting the password wouldn't be that shocking, as it changes every few months
The paper also actually said the things about Snape's nose, the makers of the map knew Snape when they were younger (James Potter, Remus Lupin, SIrius Black and Peter Pettigrew, so Lupin was still saving his ass since he knew everything that map could do)

    • @silverkyre
      @silverkyre Před 2 lety +2

I believe around this time they were changing the password daily too. Neville writes them all down and thats how Sirius gets into the dormitories and is standing over Ron with a knife.

Fun fact! The marauders map was made by remus lupin (moony) Peter pettigrew (wormtail) sirius black (padfoot) and James potter (prongs) while they were at school. Their nicknames came from the boys (minus remus because he is a werewolf) spending years attempting to and successfully becoming animagi during their school years so they could help remus with his transformations by accompanying him as animals

Yes, Dementors feed on one's happiness and J.K. Rowling wrote them as a personification of depression. Great reaction!! I am loving this series. Keep up the good work
    Also, fun facts:
    Moony - Remus Lupin
    Wormtail - Peter Pettigrew
    Padfoot - Sirius Black
    Prongs - James Potter
They were the ones who created the Marauder's Map ^^
Every Patronuses take shape of an animal. Harry's Patronus is a stag, like his father's

If you go back and watch the original punching scene you can see future Hermione's hand in the background on the stone wall.
Also page 394 is the page lupin turns into the werewolf in the third book.
And yes, he needed pettigrew to prove sirius' innocence.
And the full patronus of each person takes the form of an animal unique to that person, like a spirit animal.

Read the books or listen to the audiobooks. You're missing out on so much of the story and all your questions that you had in this reaction will be answered. The movies leave out so many things and don't explain things well or at all. Some characters like Ron and Ginny were done dirty in the movies. Most of Rons best lines were given to Hermione like the "If you want to kill Harry you have to kill us too." And Ginnys character was really watered down in the movies.

When Hermione sees herself it’s safe to assume that the average person who thought they saw themselves would but like wtf. But since Hermione knows that she can time travel, my head canon is that she knows she saw herself but shrugs it off to Ron and Harry because 1. She doesn’t want them knowing she has a time turner and 2. If she saw herself then she knows she went back for a reason so she’s trusting her future self
