- इस हफ्ते टिप्पणी में रंगा सियार की कहानी सुनिए. जंगल से भटक कर एक सियार शहर पहुंच गया. वहां नील की एक हौद में गिर गया. पूरा शरीर नीला-नीला हो गया. जोश में आकर जानवरों ने उसे जंगल का राजा बना दिया. ऐसे ही एक रंगा सियार की कहानी आपको सुनाता हूं जिसके चेहरे से रंग उतर गया है. हर शाम, हर रात किसी न किसी चैनल पर वह आपको हुआं-हुआं करता दिख जाएगा.
रंगा बाबू जवाहर लाल नेहरू यूनिवर्सिटी के स्पेशल सेंटर फ़ॉर मॉलीक्युलर मेडिसिन में प्रोफेसर हैं. मॉलीक्युलर मेडिसिन में इनका ऐतिहासिक योगदान किसी को पता हो या न हो लेकिन सुई से लेकर हवाई जहाज, पनीर से लेकर पांडवों तक और पंचायत से लेकर संसद तक का ज्ञान लेना हो तो आप रोजाना टेलीविजन के परदे पर इनसे भेंट कर सकते हैं. देश का इतिहास बाकियों के लिए गहन अध्ययन, सौ पचास किताबों की यात्रा और लाइब्रेरी में माथापच्ची का जरिया हो सकता है लेकिन रंगा बाबू के लिए देश का इतिहास परीक्षा पास करने की कुंजी है. पांच सवालों का जवाब रट कर आइए और शर्तियां परीक्षा पास कर जाइए, वरना पैसा वापस. पिछले दिनों ये गांधी, #geetapress और आज़ादी की लड़ाई का फर्रा पढ़कर आए थे.
हमने सोचा इनके कुंजी मार्का इतिहास का थोड़ा पोस्टमॉर्टम कर दिया जाय. रंगा बाबू की हुआं-हुआं में #gandhi से संबंधित तीन अहम बातें सामने आईं. पहला आरोप था कि गांधी अपनी पोती मनु के साथ सोते थे. दूसरा, गांधी अपनी पत्नी कस्तूरबा के हत्यारे हैं और तीसरा गांधी अव्वल दरजे के रेसिस्ट, बिगट थे. यानी नस्लवादी और कट्टरपंथी. गांधी से ये बेवफाई रंगा ने गीता प्रेस की मुहब्बत में दिखाई थी. इसी पर इस हफ्ते की टिप्पणी देखिए.

Yes I noticed that too then I thought maybe gandhi's story got progressively better but gita press still prints the same theory yet today. So.. I don't know I'm not supporting either of them.

I cant express how much we owe to u for this report. My mother was regular reader of Kalyan. Just before this report, I have been proud to this fact but now......I knew why my mother was so orthodox n accepted silently all agony of her life caused by my father.
In every religion, orthodoxy is seen as sincerity to religious beliefs, purity and a way to preserve cultural identity and tradition. To an extent, orthodoxy does enable one to do so but it is a double edged sword because orthodoxy also breeds discrimination and puritanism.

I beg to differ on your comment on Gandhi sleeping with his grand daughter and sleeping in her presence being different.
I would say the latter is as bad as the former.This is clearly child sexual abuse.. imagine the mental and psychological impact on her...and obviously question of consent doesn't arise.I wonder how her parents would have taken it..
I have always found his other experiments with celebacy., almost (?) in the category of perversion. While no doubt Gandhi was a great man of his time..its important to acknowlege his negative side as well.A man of his stature had to have more moral consciousness than the rest.
Let's not forget that stature is accorded to someone not just by their actions or speech but by the hype around them and their ability to influence folk around them to their side. Just as there is a profusion of modi bhakts in every family today, back then many of our grandparents and great grandparents were Gandhians. Just as today people are willing to forgive modi's self contradictions and even jump to justify them, back then and even now we have people doing exactly the same for Gandhi, Nehru, Patel and Ambedkar. Ditto for other famous freedom fighters like Bhagat Singh and Azad. Today and back then, their actions were seen as hot headedness, violent etc. by the Gandhians.

Given how he responded years ago to the ‘TV NewSance®’ episode--
Aap bahut acha bolé. It’s an eye opener to learn about this so called Geeta Press and the vile stuff it publishes. Also good that you removed the mask of patriotism Mr. Anand seems to donning. People like him are crooks, misleading the public thru their lies and misinformation.
Although no one in my family (to my knowledge at least) was ever associated with the RSS or ever read Kalyan magazine either in Hindi or English (we are tamilians) I have come to understand that EVERYONE has feet of clay. If Atul ji says Gandhi's views should be seen in the context of the time of his birth then even it can be argued (worryingly so) that Hanuman Prasad Poddar held archaic views about women because he too was born in the 19th century when women who lacked education back then came across as naive and ill-informed given to petty qualities and therefore that affected his perception of women and their duties. While the extract of the conversation between sarla and savitri was shown from a clip of the Kalyan magazine, why weren't Hanuman Prasad's comments recorded somewhere shown? Instead we just have a graphic saying this is what Poddar said.
When Gandhi's quotes are shown where they were recorded and Ranganathan's speeches are shown, it would have been better to also show Poddar's in which edition of Kalyan they were recorded. Viewers can then get to know the time context of 19th century remarks interpreted in the 21st century.
Just 5 years back Anand Ranganathan writing liberal views for NL but turned right wing after 2019 when he saw that it was profitable to do so. It is easier to rapidly change one's views in modern times (to suit one's convenience) due to short public memory than in the past where people found it difficult to 'evolve' from closely held beliefs.
Gandhi had also reportedly said some really controversial things about rape of women during riots and partition. These have appeared in none other than this 13 yr old article of The Guardian www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2010/jan/27/mohandas-gandhi-women-india.
Ambedkar's views on muslims in his books would be considered islamophobic today although he had acknowledged the existence of caste among muslims too. In one of the letters written to NL hafta in 2020 a muslim sends his rebuttal to Anand Ranganathan's 2017 article for NL (now behind a paywall) the title of which speaks volumes. Like Shardul said in a recent NL charcha that he is ambivalent about the Gandhi Peace Prize being given to the Gita Press, I too am ambivalent sometimes about liberal rebuttals to conservative right wing views. The recent NL charcha too was not without its self contradiction. In the above tippani video Atul ji says that women's lives are governed by what men like or not. But in the NL charcha Atul ji was critical about choice feminism and its manifestation in the insistence of wearing the all covering burqa by women as a 'choice'. Isn't he then being a man who is judgemental about the 'choice' of hijab wearing women?
Gandhi is forgiven because he 'evolved' in his thinking and publicly acknowledged his 'evolution'. But on Twitter many people derisively quote Modi's past tweets during the UPA regime which sound quite jarring and contradictory to his stand today (Aadhar, MNREGA, fuel and gas price hike, GST and so much more). Atul ji's justification of Gandhi's nakedness in presence of young nieces is hilarious to say the least. It had even shocked his contemporaries back then and because he had so many followers (Gandhians) back then like modi today has, the problematic aspects of Gandhi's life hit headlines only after his death.
Today it is difficult to form a lasting opinion on something because context is often lacking and everything depends on who you listen or talk to. Even facts have their own interpretation by each individual (some may thing something is a big deal, others not so) leading Vivek Agnihotri to say his infamous line "facts are not facts."
PS: it is hilarious that to show that Mangal Pandey was casteist, you chose to show a bollywood film clip instead of documented evidence in some book that he was casteist.
