my parents promised me a trip to japan once covid is gone, it’s not safe to go now.
I feel like at this point in the animal crossing community. Everything that I can think of has already been done. So no matter how I decorate my island it's going to look similar to someone else's. I've just already accepted it.
The most creative thing I've ever seen someone do for their island was base it off of their favorite Wes Anderson movies with their own lil themed sections. Was pretty cool

I’ve 100% copied people’s islands! And honestly what’s the shame? I don’t share my island online, I don’t show it to other people, and if I ever want to show anything to my friends it’s usually a change I’ve done myself after finally getting motivated.

I haven’t copied anyone island yet but I really want to and I see no problem with it, I mean it’s just a game and it’s only a virtual island we probably won’t even remeber in 13 years from now, heck maybe even 6 so why does it matter? It’s not like where copying secret information from the White House lol.
I don’t think I’ve ever straight up “copied” someone’s island, but I will fully admit to borrowing ideas wholesale from people. I’m far from the most creative person, so when I see something I really like on CZcams or Insta, my mind instantly goes to “how can I do this on my island??” I have a playlist with over 100 videos on it for ACNH inspiration that I may or may not ever actually use, but if I do want to use them, they’re there
Same for me. Inspiration is definitely not the same as copying. Eventually you'll put your own touch on it, even if the original idea came from someone else.

It's almost like that's the point. With dream addresses and being able to share design codes, it's impossible to not copy ideas from others.
In my personal opinion, I feel like the entire community just kind of builds off of each other at this point. I've gotten so much inspo from pictures I've seen, and then just add my own little tweaks. I don't see any issues with loving a build or decor.style so much that you copy or draw inspiration from it ❤🥰
That's true, I saw a lot of people and video on internet doing the same thing (but not in the same way/decoration) but for real.. No one care.. If you are happy, what's the matter.. You can still credit the original. But does the original get the idea from something else to? It's a endless chain aha. Anyway, it's all fine doing this

I personally don't think its bad to straight up copy a specific part of another persons island onto your island (unless you're telling people that the specific area was your original thought) However, I do feel like if you copy majority of the ideas from another person's island onto yours, you might feel unhappy and unsatisfied towards your island on the long run, since your island really isn't "your island" if that makes sense. It's always nice to take inspo from another island and incorporate your ideas to that specific inspo so it can feel more unique to you.

I feel you. I wouldn't personally copy another island because most of the fun for me comes from it being a creative outlet. But not everyone has the same play style as me, and I think if someone copied my island to any degree, I'd be flattered. I haven't shared many of my builds yet but it would be so cool to be a trendsetter. I feel like getting territorial over this sort of thing is rather immature. It's just a game, after all, nbd.

I'm really bad at making things look cute and interesting. I'm a very minimal and straight to the point person, so making landscape feel organic and intricate is hard. BUT I found a new trick, I copied a mystery boat tour island on my island and it works perfectly! I'm going to try and include the various plots I like from Happy Home Paradise into it as well.
I get inspired by other people's islands all the time! I try to put my own spin on it.
I'm really overwhelmed by the 2.0 update, and have so many ideas of themes, I don't know where to start, quite honestly!
Terraforming is so hard for me to imagine et do, so I often mix different island’s terraforms and then change their styles if I want to (which is mostly the case). I always feel bad after, but it just helps me so much getting more creative on my island !
Honestly, I don't understand the "you copied me; HOW DARE YOU?!" mentality unless someone is passing off copied work as original or if the "copier" is in a competition where original designs are required. It's normal to take inspiration from other people. That's how creativity and inspiration works in the first place.
And even if you did fully copy someone else's island, I don't see how that's bad in the first place. Not everyone has exceptional design sense (I'm one of those people; my design sense is rather simplistic) but I love seeing a well put together locale. So, yeah, I get inspiration off of Reddit all the time. I don't feel like I'm doing anything wrong and I really don’t think there's a reason to.
Also what grinds my gears is the paths they give have terrible borders...just let it blend seamlessly like the millions of custom patterns do. Seriously Nintendo...now that hard. Hope they do it on an update someday
I mean even if you try do things completely unique you'll still do something other people do my accident. I discovered making hearts with the paths by myself and I was so excited and then later when I saw videos online I learned tons of people do that lol it just happens. There is a saying "there is nothing new under the sun" and that's very true. We all take inspiration and influence from each other even without knowing it.
…but it’s the intention behind the action. You still felt so excited and proud to have developed something organically…that is what’s important regardless of whether another person out there in the world has also done the same…YOU arrived at it organically. It’s an important distinction.
I don’t think it’s straight up “copy.” I have trouble figuring out what I want to do so I look up for inspiration. Like an example I looked up some examples of what to do with the campsite. I almost did what the picture look like but I also did my own thing to make it look the way I wanted.

The only reason I feel like my island is somewhat unique is because it’s a mix of themes, but I’m sure if you look at the builds individually you could find at least a handful of people with similar things - I am sick of the “you copied me” attitude going on right now bc I’m sure if I dug deep enough I could find someone else who did something similar before the person complaining - this community is so big and so creative and we should appreciate that

I’ve used someone’s before from their before/after post but then decorated the ‘base’ to fit my own design. I’m not on social media and play usually offline so… it doesn’t matter! I do find joy doing my own thing the majority of the time.
I go to an art University and we are taught that no one is capable of coming up with original ideas. That's just the way the world works. Director's, writers, architects, fashion designers, developers, etc., all copy each other to some extent. In Animal Crossing we have the room to try to make our islands unique but at the end of the day....you putting a restaurant area on your island is something thousands of people have already done. You deciding to make "lookout" points is something many people have done before. So, indefinitely, you can't not copy someone else. I appreciate creators like you who are able to talk about these things and share your thought process for creating. That in itself sparks so much inspiration for all of us that are subscribed to your channel ❤
I'm currently copying Canada Crossing's Snow Bay island. Because I've tried and failed multiple times to complete my island and his layout just speaks to me on a deep level.
It's inspired me so much, I actually feel the drive to finish this. And i'm hoping that by going through the motions of laying down the paths, terraforming, moving buildings, and decorating, I will better understand how to put my own layout together later.
I'll put my own spin on a few areas, but it's going to be roughly a 85% xerox.

I think copying is actually a beautiful way to learn, which is hands-on. I always recommend watching speedbuild videos instead of your videos to get ideas for builds because you can see how people get to their finished results from the ground up.
Copying serves that same purpose, you have this hands-on approach of actually doing it, eventually you learn to fiddle on your own and adjust from there to make it more unique.
I have full on COPIED almost a whole island. Like took screenshots of maps, put it on an island planner and just followed the blueprint. For me it took a lot of stress out of the process, and it allowed me to test out ideas without a lot of effort/time ✨
Besides, I don’t have an Nintendo online acc. so it’s almost impossible for me to completely “copy” an island because I have limited resources/items.
60% of my island is flat now but the little builds that remain have taken on new functions. Now I could care less what my island looks like and more about ease of access to enhance the gameplay since I’ve experienced a whole dolled up island (which is beautiful but sometimes it’s hard to navigate/get the most out of the game). Also it’s less intimidating for me to slowly make my own builds knowing I have the option to “copy”. I see no shame in it!
I’ve been flattening and redoing the same corner of my island for MONTHS. Especially now that it’s winter. Everything looks so cluttered because the ground is just white and any little thing looks like too much 😩 I’m tempted to go back to fall or spring just to avoid the stress I feel when I see the mess on the snow lol
For the villager yard I always try to make it communal so maybe a coffee/cafe vibe or games. I love the stuff that makes it look like laundry or project areas

yeah! I copy all my spaces! I don't have a visual memory, so I can't visualize what I want to do... so I look at pictures, and take my own items/supplies and copy. No one sees my island but me. I just want to have a nice island for my villagers :)
Whenever I get inspired with a photo I recreate it but I also put my own hues to it.
I like the brick path for sound effects! Place it down, place your chosen custom design on top of it, the footsteps stay
That and the stone, for this exact reason.
There's only so many different combinations of items and trends/styles blow up all the time w only a certain amount of items to fit the theme
I used to be so embarrassed posting my island when I first started playing at launch because even though I made my island my own I didn’t make the patterns myself and I felt like it was disrespectful to the original creator. I post my island now on twitter, and I still feel guilty sometimes but even if I just put the codes o used in the comments it’s easier for me to do it.

for your neighborhood, i suggest making a community laundry area and other services (snack machine, atm, phone booth) in a strip along the front of the houses with a different pathing underneath 🤩 or to the side
I like the community idea, and maybe add the lawn chairs around the fire with some drinks or something.
I've definitely "copied" or was heavily inspired by someone else's island. If I ever share a picture of the area on my IG, I make sure to credit them. I am at the present moment, not comfortable sharing my DA because of these copied areas but otherwise, I don't have an issue with it. I know that I would personally love to see others "copy" or be inspired by something I did on my island, if that were to ever happen. I play the game for fun and that's the way I see it.

Just like the bathtub and wall spices combo, I personally love putting two of those wall spices next to an adjacent store shelf because they line up so perfectly. Definitely recommend trying it

You asked for suggestions on your villager area; what I've done on my island is they're all in a row just like yours but I've separated them by putting holly bushes between them and behind them. I'm using Holly right now because it seasonal and when it's spring again I'll go back to maybe hydrangeas or something.
Tbh a lot my builds are inspired by others but when I do it it looks ugly LOL. So I fix it till it fits my style of building.

I live in a small town in Indiana, and this island looks just like my home. Most of the time islands are themes that you don't really see in real life, which is awesome and valid, but this one just seems so real. Its nice.
There is nothing wrong with copying parts of someone’s island and putting it in yours or just the layout, it think it’s different if you copy someone’s whole island item by item(which I’m sure no one has ever done). I’m super big on copy people’s vacation homes because I never know what items look good together

I love when people copy builds on my island, even if they use the same custom codes it will always be a little different and slightly unique, I would of never built my island up if it wasn’t from seeing others islands and being inspired but how much you really can do, which is a great thing

I've got ADHD and executive functioning disorder. And I'm not super artistic. So... When I see someone doing something I like I'm gonna copy it to an extent. It isn't hurting anyone and it's making me happy.

Part of what makes this community nice *is* gaining inspiration from each other, I literally just had a friend over yesterday so she could take screenshot to use for inspo. I never liked this “stop copying me!” attitude so many players have had lately.

I definitely get inspiration from lots of people but I don't copy things directly. Mostly because I like to put my own style into stuff but also because some designs are pretty but way too annoying for actually playing the game. Also the custom design slots!! The bathtub is call bathtub with yuzu and its a seasonal item between November and December but Idk the exact date. The soccer ball bin is call the ball catch. And the square bathtub is called...... the square bathtub and electric fence is just call fence and it's a partion
I've started to play one month ago. To be honest, I don't have this problem at all. First of all: I have a ghost island, so everything is dark. That's the aesthetic, some things are more monochrome then goth, but mostly its a dark island. I checked at the beginning what items you can have in the game, made a list and planned what I want to do with them and where. And now I collect them. I also checked the colours of the items of course, so if its not black, lilac, grey or white, I can't take it.
The island is completely shaped and most of the paths are also done, as all the stairs and bridges. I saw a lot of islands that have no plan, that are the usual most cluttered ones. That ones that have a plan, a flag and sometimes a song AND a name that explains what theme it is, are the best. Just think of what you want to do BEFORE you start. Make a plan and a list of all the items you need for it and you good to go.
Animal Crossing, though better after the 2.0 update, does have a limited number of items that "theme" together and look nice. And then when a really popular custom code takes off (like the diagonal street design from Colin) you do end up with a bunch of really similar islands.

Yeah I do this but I didn't do this for my Island my island is original I did this for a couple houses for DLC because some of them I have no idea what to do or design or anything and other people's designs are like so good and I'm like I can never design something like this
