Central Sleep Apnea Explained!

  • Central sleep apnea is less common than obstructive sleep apnea, but it's not rare. It's important to understand the different types of sleep apnea, including mixed sleep apnea. Be aware that if you have obstructive sleep apnea and you use CPAP therapy as part of your treatment, then you are at a higher level of risk to develop central sleep apnea.

    I was recently diagnosed with central sleep apnea from dysautonomia. Also have sinus tachycardia and recently chf. Sucks bc I'm only 47. I've already lost a lot of my vision from chronic optic neuropathy for whatever reason. I was active and healthy 2.5 years ago and now I'm in horrible health. I don't get it and I hate it.

    I have recently been diagnosed with both obstructive and central sleep apnea, my readings are regularly between 30-70 times an hour every night, i get severe chest pain when i laugh and have a heart murmur too. My respiratory specialist has never seen a case like mine and said that as a result of my case, he's now going to explain it to the rest of the respiratory department. Its incredibly difficult for me to breath through my nose while im awake.

      @RespShop  Před 5 měsíci +3

      If you did a home sleep study we suggest asking your doctor for a referral to do an in-lab sleep test. Lab sleep tests are more comprehensive (measures your brain waves, eye movement, heart rate, oxygen levels, breathing effort, snoring, sleeping position) and the technicians will watching you throughout the night so the test won't miss any gasping during sleep.

      I have a Neurologist due to a head injury as a child (I’m an epileptic because of it) who had ordered a sleep study.
      I got a call from my doctor who was quite concerned as they found that I stop breathing on and off irregularly throughout the night. Thus she is suspecting CSA but she was at odds with it because it is rare for someone my age and with my build to have CSA. I was set at 75% irregular stops in breathing for brief periods throughout the night which she found odd. She then ordered an MRI to see about brainstem activity and to have a heart echo done.
      She ultimately thinks something is wrong with the communication between my brain and body. My brain for some reason she suspects is not telling my body to continue breathing while asleep.
      Perhaps you could get an appointment with a Neurologist who would then be the one to order the sleep study and they would be the person to review the results and go over them with you.
      My periodic episodes of idiopathic double vision is ultimately what made her call me sooner rather than later.

    So, I was diagnosed with CSA at the age of 38 and been on an ASV ever since. Never took opioids or antidepressants that could have caused this. I also know I had the part of CSA that caused me to stop breathing completely and basically "turned off" in my sleep (I had it during the test and they caught it). I'm wondering what would you recommend I do to test and see if there is anything wrong with my nervous system?

      It could be that your settings need some fine-tuning. Is your sleep doctor following your therapy and adjusting your settings? If not, it's a good idea to reach out to them and request closer monitoring. Most of the ASV machines come with remote monitoring so doctors can see how you respond to their changes.

Have it on 13 times and then I breathe most of the time myself. Preferably exhaustion and muscle weakness and extreme fatigue. Going to bed for a while now. But almost impossible to fall asleep early with a machine. I cover off is the chance to sleep. the water container lasts 7 hours. So I never get to sleep in either. It's too heavy and the machine breathes for me for short breaths. Complained about this for 6 months. Sleep measurement at the hospital didn't work as the mattress was so hard that I couldn't possibly fall asleep. But they measure me awake and then the blood oxygen is down to 91%. But measurement done a long time ago when I slept for 1 hour, it was at 82%. I live in Sweden and one of the worst countries in the western world today from being good.

    • @RespShop
      @RespShop  Před 4 měsíci

      Some people develop central sleep apnea after starting CPAP therapy but in most cases, the CSA goes away after a few weeks as the body adjusts. It's not very common, but it does happen. The benefits of CPAP therapy outweigh the potential risk of developing CSA. Plus, there are ways to get rid of the treatment emergent CSA by adjust CPAP settings - and your doctor will monitor your response to therapy and make changes accordingly.

      Sometimes cpap therapy can cause central apneas but this can go away in a few weeks as your body gets used to it. A suggestion is to turn off EPR as that can also contribute to central apneas. Keep an eye on your centrals and definitely let you doctor know if you continue to have centrals with EPR off for a week or two. But if your sleep study shows that you have a significant amount of centrals, it's best to speak to your doctor ASAP since that would indicate the central apneas were a problem before CPAP.

Normally this wouldn’t be a problem but last night really scared me. I was having these episodes of forgetting to breath for some reason, yet I could tell they were for less than 30 seconds. But there was this one that seemed like it lasted longer than a minute before my entire body jolted awake because something fell off my shelf.
