A spinal cord injury occurs when your spinal cord, which is a thick bundle of nerve fibers that allows your brain to communicate with other nerves almost everywhere in your body, is damaged, resulting in a change in the normal motor, sensory or autonomic function. This damage is either temporary or permanent.
