    I was at my hair stylist yesterday at high noon. It sits on an incline across the road from a horse farm. As I waited for my color to set in, my stylist swiveled my chair to face the farm. She said “i wish the horses were out now..”I explained to her what I have learned and why it is wise that they are not out on that grassy pasture at that time of day. I was happy to see and to report that at least that horse farmer must know about the grass and it’s effects on horses. I am learning the most fascinating facts about horses from this channel. You would be a perfect candidate for a documentary.

      No, really, you should seriously consider this.
      Up until just over 100 years ago, before automobiles - humans & horses had a relationship together.
      We should know these things, this information is part of lost history.
      People get puppies & kittens because they are adorable with no care for the adult dogs & cats. Obviously people cannot just get a horse & think all they have to do is feed & water it, throw a saddle on it & ride off into the sunset!!!

      I’ve noticed horse lovers are different that way, they’d rather spend their $$ on their horses, animals & farm. Their animals depend on them for their care like a child depends on a parent so it’s natural to put their needs as a higher priority. I’ve noticed most horse properties or ranches the owner's residence itself takes a back seat to the stables & pastures, even in Scottsdale/Cave Creek.

    "Why not just turn them out and see what happens"... Having owned a horse as a kid, that was sold to me without the seller disclosing that he had foundered and having to put him down, this is the most horrifying statement I have heard in a long time! Not only could that kill them, but if you don't realize what's happening it becomes excruciatingly painful for the horse to where they refuse to even stand up because of the pain. To me that mentality borders on neglect at best, or at least a total disregard for the health and safety of your animals!

    O, the dreaded founder...my boss's mules never foundered, ate dirty hay, drank rancid water and lived to over 30 years old...The horses, however, had all foundered before and were left on spring clover and weeds -- so every year I fought with my boss, got fired, called the vet, and after over $1,000 in charges (bute was a staple in the barn) he would let me use the grazing masks and skip sweet feed for the horses (one Morgan, an Arabian, a retired Standard bred and a Saddlebred) I always wished he would listen to someone as knowledgeable as you. FYI Trakehners I knew were always lanky and thin. Hanoverians, not so much!

      It is a similar thing but in horses it causes swelling and extreme pain in their feet. Once they've had it once they are prone to it for the rest of their lives. If left untreated it can cause permanent damage and the pain is unimaginable. I have watched horse rescue episodes where they've rescued a horse with extreme laminitis and despite giving them the maximum amount of painkillers they still can barely walk. All because people want to get their horses out as soon as possible so they can eat grass and don't have to pay for feed anymore.

  • @WendyLemontree
    @WendyLemontree Před 2 měsíci +16

    I used to have goats and a mini donkey. I am also shocked at how few people who have had livestock their entire lives who don't know that laminitis preventible and caused by getting onto spring grass too quick. One of my favorite goats was foundered when I bought her. Because they are so lightweight, it isn't quite as serious as it is with horses, but I hated that I couldn't completely fix her hooves, they were very twisted. 😢 She didn't seem to be in pain though, thankfully.

There is way too much bad info available. Re the riding lawnmower, enough people use those that you may be able to find a good deal on a used one. Another idea is to ask your mechanic to keep an eye out. Sometimes they come across things. A hydralic dump sounds heavenly! I hope you can find one at a good price. I went and bought a Cub Cadet riding mower and had a blast with it. I’m not sure anyone knew much about grasses/sugar content over 55 years ago when I was fully invested time-wise with my horse(es) but I may be wrong.🧐. It makes me happy I didn’t lose an equine due to my grazing timing back then. Bless your knowledge and imparted wisdom as i follow your fabulous journey here! Big hugs to you and your supportive husband. 🤗

    Laminitis is not just drama, it is super serious! When the coffin bone in the foot rotates it can actually force itself out of the bottom of the hoof! Ouch! No coming back from that one. I love it that you use your channel to educate about these things. It amazes me how some people that own horses know so little. Keep up the amazing work! You should splurge a little on your next piece of equipment. You deserve it!😁❤️

    I watch a Buffalo channel. The young farmer was new and one of his buffalo ate a flower that had grown on what hehad planted. It killed the animal in one day. A very hard lesson for the young farmer. But live and learn. It never dawned on me that grass or other things could be dangerous. I learn so much from the farmers and ranchers i watch. I am a retired teacher, so i recognize your talents with your animals. I have learned so much watching you. Your patience is amazing. Also, i admire how much you recognize the individual habits, likes and dislikes of your animals. Including Huckleberry and and cat.

    That was so funny CC. Nigel trots across like a handsome King, looking immaculate, looks at you and 30 seconds later he looks like a manky tramp, I'm still laughing. 🤣🤣🤣 Manky or not he still looks handsome and regal with his usual attitude oozing out his pores, head held high. I still can't believe his age. His markings and mane are stunning. 💙

    Get a zero turn mower you'll not be disappointed, you can mow twice as fast as a riding mower saving time. Also you turning radius is a lot smaller allowing you to get places a riding mower can't. Would check out other mowers beside John Deere.. Your paying for the name not necessarily the best

    • @brassbuckles
      @brassbuckles Před 2 měsíci

      I second the tip on John Deere, because they are definitely not as popular in my area as they were 20+ years ago. When I was a kid, they were THE brand to get, but between the repair exclusivity controversy and the change in manufacturing, I hardly ever see them anymore. And if farmers and lawn enthusiasts aren't buying them, there's a reason for that. It might just be budget/value, or it might be quality issues.
      As far as zero turn vs. lawn tractor, it depends on what she's going to use it for. If she just wants a mower, zero-turn is a great idea. If she's going to use it for any hauling or light tractor work that she can't necessarily do with the ATV, then the lawn tractor may make more sense. Some companies make attachments for lawn tractors that could be used for raking the arena or the dry lots, sowing grass seed, plowing a garden, etc. So it's all up to her current and future plans.

    Now this is all very interesting…I just throw my thoughts in the ring…here in Europe we rarely feed Alfalfa…mostly regular Grass Hay, 1.Cut with pretty long stems and mostly seed heads on already, of course in the spring you start the Horses just a couple of hours a day till they go out the whole day, in healthy Warmbloods I rarely have seen Laminitis cases…could it be that feeding the alfalfa hay that has way more protein during the winter makes them more sensitiv to the sugar and starch in fresh grass or is this more the difference between the horse breeds…?

    I can't live without our side x side (Gator). Look at a Kubota. Less money, at least they were when we looked and bought ours, and almost indestructible. We got a diesel 4 wheel drive because that was what I wanted and my husband didn't argue with me (he got his tractor that he wanted and the attachments so he better not argue with me. Not to mention the tractor is a diesel so we don't have to worry about fuel). Make sure you have a hydraulic dump bed it makes life so much easier. I went back and forth on that aspect and now I know I would have regretted not having it.

    thanks for the tip about 3am to 10am, I knew it's not ok to let my minis graze in the middle of the day. but i get up very early to go to work so I can let them out at that time in the morning and bring them in mid morning. I lost my first pony to this disease after a long struggle so taking it seriously is not an option for me. My friends who think I am 'fat shaming' them just have no clue.

      You certainly have a change in perspective when after you see one suffer from laminitis of founder!

  • @SandraOrtmann1976
    @SandraOrtmann1976 Před 2 měsíci

    Laminitis ("Hufrehe" here in Germany) is a very serious thing. I was always afraid of that, as my horse was an very easy feeder (means he tended to gain weight very easily, but he was also of a rather sturdy built - no draft horse though). As almost from the very beginning, his buddy was a Quarter horse who got Laminitis from a very young age. Luckily, this handsome boy was owned by a veterinarian's wife (the horse was a little older than my boy when she bought him, so the harm was already done). So the horse got the very best and immediate treatment possible and made it to a pretty high age. But his owner admitted if her husband was not a vet, she would have struggled heavily to treat him basically permanently. He always had to have special shoeing, usually with some kind of inlay to give him the correct angle for his hooves.

    Hey cow girl, I had a mare with. Cushions decease and I tried her on presend and it made her extremely depressed and see did stop eating so I stopped it. She did live till she was 36 bless her but for me I’d rather control the decease with good food small but often and monitor it day by day. I now have to ponies on strip grazing and soaked hay as they are prone to laminitis I do think my one pony had metabolic issue I haven’t tested as I feel I can manage it pretty well and now she’s bk in work she’s so much happier. I have 5 horses I total and each day I’m learning all of the time. You have provided sone good information in this vlog fir people that my not be aware for these situations. Great vlog 😊. Leanne
