When I first saw Palworld, I was relatively unimpressed by its creature designs. In an exercise of open mindedness, I took a chance on it anyway thanks to Game Pass and walked away surprised by the addictive base building and creature caretaking mechanics!

The fact that it sold 3 million copies in 2 days, and became the #1 most played game in the world and the #1 top selling game in the world on Steam at the same time just shows how much Game Freak underestimated how starved Pokemon fans were for a high quality, innovative Pokemon game.

In defense of the developers, there are over 1000 pokemon now. It's difficult to make an entirely new set of characters that aren't going to resemble some pokemon.

It is possible, there are many pokémon clones out there, with wholly unique monster designs, the devs with this one were either lazy, or it's some kind of parody that flies over my head.

@@ravee-eh4dd funny thing was even back in the N64 and then GameCube era I had in my mind a Pokémon game that was like a Zelda 3d open world with real time combat like palworld is doing and so to seem them stick to same formula for so long after that was saddening
For reals. Even gun less, the base building mechanic where your Pokémon actually help out and have a part in the building process is something I'm legit surprised has not been a thing yet in Pokémon games.
They don't need the survival mechanics, it could just be that you build your own little fort somewhere in your backyard or something, and your Pokémon can help out with certain things depending on their typing.
With how much the series likes to emphasize your trainer's bond with their Pokémon, it's weird they have yet to dabble in that system.
Remember its still in beta, they could go the route Obsidian took with Grounded and add more creatures, features, and story
If you look at the their last game Craftopia though, they didn't finish that game either. Screenshots I saw gave me BOTW vibes. Whether they actually finish it or not though it looks like it'll be fun for a solid 30 hours

The game crossed 1.2 million players on just Steam today (for reference BG3 reached 870K peak concurrent players on Steam and it won GOTY) so I'd say it's safe to say that they're going to stick with this game. It could become their cash cow game series in the coming decade if they play their cards right. Palworld 2, Palworld 3, Palworld spin-offs, Palworld merch, etc.
@@zacziggarot They didnt finish craftopia because they keep adding stuff, in fact they did their biggest update 6 months before palworld, it used to have medium sized islands that you would need to teleport to and they added a huge open world in the last update. And before that they added bosses/build parts/skills all the time, i dont know why people think craftopia makes palworld look bad, yes, its also a copycat game but its very fun and it did get a lot of support for free
I think the breeding making a combo creature and not one or the other is pretty sick
It would be difficult if they didn't plan the design of the pals to support this beforehand, like the dev of Cassette Beasts did for the fusions between creatures

Tried the game on gamepass. Thought I wouldn't like it as I'm not big into Survival games. The game actually surprised me. Normally Survival games feel empty to me, you are the one and only out there unless playing with other players. Now you have the pals helping out, making it less of a chore. I haven't played it a ton but what I played so far was quite nice.
It's interesting to me how much of a void Pokemon created in it's own genre, refusing so hard to change in any substantial way that lead to all these other games to be created to satisfy that hunger. So many people were amazed by Arceus and how much it changed the formula, but i never bought it, it was too little for me, and games like this are the proof of that, they could do so much more if they really wanted to put the effort.

@@firstknocked8767 I definetly did, i questioned so much to buy Sword or not, and ended up caving into the hype, and then regretted it tremendously and traded it for Bayonetta 2. Haven't looked back since. I play things like Pokemon Sleep and such as i still like the franchise, but the mainline games are so lazy and stuck in their ways that i won't bother anymore unless there's a big change.

@jeremycards Funny you were interested in SwSh when fans are trying to discourage fans as they removed a core aspect of the game, being the full roster of Pokemon, while also having pretty iffy graphics.
The biggest complement I have is that this game is secretly a Viva Piñata game.

@@J_MM yea dudes, I'm pumped. I'm a die hard Pokemon fan, I've made a fair amount of money in competitive battles. I don't dislike pokemon. It's just that Nintendo has been saying we will get a game for the old time fans and each drop since they said that has been broken or lack luster. This game scratches the adult Pokemon fan itch and I can't wait for it to grow.
My exact thoughts. Gamefreak has been slacking so hard the past few years reselling the same old pokemons each Pokemon Game for 20+ dollars and then asking us for 70dollar pricetags. Scarlet and Violet is the worst and most greediest Pokemon game that has released as its a shit running boring and ugly looking game with uninspired Pokemon.
This game is actually really good. I'm enjoying the building aspect which I had no idea was even in the game
I find the Pals (Pokémon) extremely useful, especially for your base. You can have them build, gardening, mining, etc.
With Pokémon games you mainly stick with your favs, and just collect the others to stay trapped in their poke balls forever lol
I'm wondering how that's going to balance later on since you're incentivized to catch 10 of everything, I've been trying to rotate the weaker ones back into the mix
@@zacziggarot you can craft the “pal distillation pod” to combine several of the same types of Pals to make higher ranked one’s. Also you have the “Statue of Power” to increase their stats. So right now it seems like a really good system
@@zacziggarot You will be forced to sell them, you would rather use pals with level 3 gathering for example than the weaker once in the starting area
@@zacziggarot There is a structure that you can build to power up your pals by sacrificing other of the same type, so you will need A LOT of copies to make 1 powerful pal, just to get the first star you already need 8 of them and then 16 for 2 stars
When I play Pokemon, I do at least make sure to train every Pokemon I capture to evolve them, or at least make them decently strong enough, but I do agree a feature where they actively help you in some way other than catching and battling, would make them very useful if collection isn't your thing.

I'm enjoying the hell out of this game, I'm almost at max level, but all the best pals are direct copies of pokemon stiched together, the combat is basically what we got in arceus and the rest is a genre thats very well versed by now, I look forward to updates.
This game should highlight how easy it is to throw together a BOTW/TOTK map with biomes, and how important what you fill those zones with is, I'm enjoying running past 20 different pals infinitely more than "oh look, another moblin camp"
I think dungeon design, base building and more in-depth crafting is what's missing in PLA (and SV).
@@zjzr08 PLA is the most experimental Pokemon game ever but its still a Pokemon game, you make your home in a village why would you have base building?
I agree the dungeon design can be lacking but cast your mind back to Sword and Shield, there's a cave very early on and its about 50yards long with two types of Pokemon in it, super boring but literally just an L shaped cave and thats it, then cut to Scarlet and Violet (especially the DLC) there's caves that feeeeeeeeeeeel like they're the size of the entire zone, theres Pokemon on the walls, theres long cavernous drops theres rare Pokemon deeeeep into the cave
Scarlet/Violet were such gigantic leaps forward for their design from story, world and systems but it gets none of the credit because it can get framey on a switch but that feels like every game I played on switch, I pulled the Master Sword out in BOTW to 2fps
@CyhichiNaka We had a home to stay in Hoenn and Sinnoh yet Secret Bases were still a thing...plus you could've made bases outside the main city as your sorta second home.
Using SwSh as a metric is quite a low bar, as comparing to Gen 1-6 even Let's Go games, while there are better areas to explore in PLA, it doesn't have the intricate dungeons that we had previously IMO. Palworld meanwhile seems to incoporate some level of decent dungeon design.
I do agree SV is a bit underrated in terms of map design but I get the poor art direction and areas not being filled enough other than Pokemon and NPCs doesn't motivate some people.
Was at work, and all I wanted to do was get back to playing pokemon with guns. Game is so addictive
I had it on my steam wishlist and saw the very positive review rating then decided to pick it. I played for about 4 hours last night and had an absolute blast. Ark or reallcouldn't hold my attention, mostly because the gameplay loops aren't satisfying, and yet something about Palworld feels cohesive and addictive. Totally agree with the animations and UI. But damn, I had a blast and I can't wait to go explore dungeons and fight bosses and capture my own boss level pals.
I downloaded this around 7pm Melbourne time and before I knew it was 3am. Lucky it is the weekend 😂

The pals being able to do the busy work for me is perfect. I don't love survival games and was skeptical but i have disappeared into this game.

Haha, you sticking to the starting area that first hour is basically my experience but more than just that hour. I got really into the game play loop of catching pals, assigning them to my base, leveling up to get technology points so I can get the items I wanted specifically for my base, that a few hours had gone by and I was still in the starting area.
I built my base right in the first open zone you reach and didn't move much farther than that
By now that has changed of course, and I've explored more of the world, fought some bosses, etc, but it was a while before I decided to move on haha. That part of the game got its hooks on me early and did not let go 😅
Oh shit that monster fatigue system is actually one on one to how monster doing stuff for you works in rune factory.
Yeah, the monsters doing the farm work really made me say, "huh, it's like rune factory."

Got it on Gamepass and I'm having a blast. Played it all weekend. Sure you can tell that it's an early access game. It doesn't feel complete in some areas but if they can keep adding to it like Valhiem or No Man's Sky. I think it has great potential.
Favorite game franchise of all time is Pokémon. Favorite new game to play within the last ten years has been The Forest. Both referenced. Interest was already growing, but now I’m intrigued.

Legends Arceus was amazing, if gamefreak would listen to fans and drastically improve graphics/presentation and performance, palworld wouldn't be so needed in the genre
Initial impressions are great, but the game will really be defined by how much support it gets in future updates.
The developers are the same people who made "Craftopia" which is controversial on how much support it has received. We will have to wait then see if this is going to be a repeat of their past business practice, or if they will acknowledge the early success of Palworld then be more determined to support its growth.

This is day one Gamepass and no lie I bought this game for 29.99. The total came out to 31.51 and honestly I do not regret my purchase even though the game crashed a few times. So, not only did I get to play for free I bought this game and I cannot lie I love it. Its much more than Pokémon with guns I am happy you gave this game a shot even tho at first you were like big deal. You gave this game a fair shot. On top of acknowledging the flaws of this game. Some pop in as well this game is in early access but runs for the most part smooth.
You should try Nexomon and Nexomon: Extinction if you want something new with the old pokemon feel.
Those two games especially the second one. Wipe the floor with the new Pokémon’s. The gameplay and design
Also Cassette Beasts. It's just so good. It feel a lot less "mobile game" like Nexomon.

I really wish after us getting such amazing games as Subnautica and Valheim that people would stop just dismissing the survival genre, especially on the basis that all of them are somehow the same when that couldn't be further from the truth. People have such an underlying bias against this genre, it's so ridiculous to punish devs with fresh ideas based on an idea of a survival game that you got stuck in your head. There is no more or less reason to be skeptical about a new survival game than a game of any other genre.

Bought and played this game last night. Havent reached yet the level where I can craft guns but I can definitely say this game is way different that Pokemon. I was more focused fortifying my base and just catch monsters if I need a specific worker like someone to build/mine/cook/plant seeds. I cant wait to try the guns and shoot those giant monsters in the face
Hopefully the success of this will result in game freak getting their shit together and stepping up the quality of the next Pokémon game
I had a Tamagotchi when I was a kid in 5th or 6th grade maybe. I wasn't allowed to bring it to school, but I did one day so I could show it off to friends. Well, this girl wanted to borrow it for the day and I thought she was pretty so I said sure. I love Pokemon but man I want gamefreak to evolve the game in a new way. Palworld is an example of this. Pokemon should honestly be reworked. And add mechanics like pokemmo. Mechanics like limited legendaries and shit like that

Pokemon needs a competitor badly so GameFreak stop putting zero effort into polishing their games but they still break records regardless.

Pretty much a requirement just like regular Pokémon unless you create a custom server that gives you 100% capture rate even at full health
The game is really fun. Game Pass is extremely glitchy, crashes often and highly exploitable but the loop in itself is charming. Im hopeful this game grows
