Love this review! I have tried this range and I did like the textures, loved the facial serum and although there is fragrance I didn’t sense any myself and had no irritation and usually I am quite sensitive. That being said, not a fan of this false buzz word advertising at all. I hope people check here for reviews before spending their money.

I tried this range recently and threw it in the bin after two days. Left me with red blotches in my skin and a burning sensation overall in my face. I have been using retinol products including boots and super facialist for over two years and this is definitely not a proper retinol product. I’m just glad I got it half price on an offer but even that was too much to spend.

I like Superdrug but every product I have seen in their optimum range has a ton of fragrance, so I've never bought anything from that brand. I once used the Simple age resisting night cream (which has retinyl palmitiate) and found it very irritating, bearing in mind I tolerate tretinoin. I couldn't identify anything else in that formula I hadn't used before without incident, so have avoided that ingredient since. I'm the person reading the ingredient list (often covered in Superdrug with a security tag), before purchasing any product. I have eczema and super sensitive skin so it's important to me to try to avoid known irritants. I can only use tretinoin as I took a year building up my tolerance increasing strength slowly and now use 0.5% tretinoin most nights. I can't use strong acids whilst on tretinoin even now, after so much time has passed. Really strong vitamin c is also problematic whilst using tretinoin, although I can tolerate some of the derivatives. Anti hauls are useful especially if people don't look at ingredients. I probably wouldn't have even looked at this particular range due to all the fragrance I've already noted, but there have been other videos from yourself which have saved me time even looking at something in a shop. Best wishes.

That blooming Superdrug security tag eh! I've been known to peel it off a bit so I can read them but I got odd looks from security so now I go and tell them why I'm doing it lol. x

Thanks for the review. I bought the day and night cream yesterday but luckily it was on offer and I got both for £14.99. I'm tempted to try the day cream as I always use a serum with SPF anyway but I'm so disappointed that this range doesn't really contain retinol...... Very naughty Superdrug! As regards the squalane, it definitely isn't derived from animals. They're vegan and cruelty free products. The real stuff is made from sharks liver and would become rancid very quickly and for that reason it hasn't been used in beauty products for some time. I'm a big fan of squalane and especially like to use it before retinol as it prevents irritation. It's very similar to the oil that we produce naturally so it's great for controlling excess oil and is unlikely to cause bad reactions (your skin basically recognises it as your own oil). It even firms skin because it boosts collagen production.
I had such high hopes for this range. I'm just glad I didn't pay full price, I'd be annoyed if I'd just spent 30 quid! Have you tried the collagen Optimum range? They have good reviews too but I'm now dubious about them as well. Collagen Amino Acids are listed as one of the ingredients but I know very little about collagen so I don't know if that is true collagen???
Oh well, you live and learn I suppose. Thanks again for another interesting review x

One more thing, when I have a product like this that I don't end up using on my face I use it on the backs of my hands instead. People have commented how young my hands look for my age lol. No surprise when you consider how much I pay for my 'hand cream' hehe x

Great review! For me personally the problem with fragrance is that retinoids make my skin more sensitive, and the fragrances I normally wouldn't react to in products unless I'm using retinoids. Since I figured that out, now I look for fragrance-free on every product even if I might like the way a fragrance in a product. Thankfully many brands are going fragrance-free

I believe that the main"active"ingredient of Boots "Protect and Perfect" range of products is retinyl palmitate.
Didn't they once do a lot of research ,in collaboration with Manchester University, on this ingredient as an anti- aging molecule ??

    • @TheBeautyMaverick
      @TheBeautyMaverick  Před 4 lety

There isn't one main active ingredient in the No7 Protect & perfect that I can see - its a combo of Retinyl Palmitate, Vitamin E, Vitamin C, and peptides. There wasn't a lot of research no, only one study with 60 subjects - the problem is that research carried out by the company producing the product are not considered as evidence as its not independent. Secondly though, 60 subjects would not be considered a statistically significant amount to confirm or deny anything. Finally, they tested the serum, not an ingredient, so there is no knowing what caused the results - it could be the Glycerin! Finally, it was only 43% of the people that showed an improvement, so less than half! Hope this helps :0) x

Thank you for your research and hard work Karen. What a pity Superdrug use fragrance in these skincare products and also use the term 'retinol' in the labelling when it isn't retinol. I love Superdrug because they don't test their ingredients on animals and their price point is good. Unfortunately I won't use any of this range as I totally agree with your views. I'll stick with The Ordinary for now, although not happy it's been bought by Estée Lauder, who seem to own half the world (!) and condone the hideous cruelty of testing their products on animals. Maybe I'll try GoW, who I believe are cruelty free x

I am extra dry. I think I prefer fragrance over alcohol. Alcohol is a real no-no for me in my facial care. I do, however, use fragranced items, such as my Nivea blue tin (haven't found anything that is better, seriously tried a lot, even my dermatologist made a cream for me fragrance free and it didn't even touch the Nivea). It's so personal, isn't it? :D Thanks for the review, Karen. I know you don't mean to be a Debby Downer (as they say) but if the products out there aren't any good, what are you going to do?

The only thing I use from this range is the retinol facial booster drops. It seems fragrance-free but it does contain farnesol at the end of the ingredients list, which seems a strange addition to me (I also avoid fragrance in skincare products). It also contains squalene and squalane. But I didn’t know about this study about retinyl palmitate and links to tumours in animals, so thank you for that. I didn’t expect miraculous anti-ageing results with this product when I bought it, but I happen to like the feeling of thin oils (like squalene) to help my dry skin. I’m not a retinol user either so any other results would have been a bonus. But I will look into The Ordinary retinol offerings now as the ingredients are safer. Thank you!

I've been watching your channel for sometimes. I have got a question about retinol.. The one I bought from amazon (viola retinol) it really have a good reviews, I've been using this for over a week and it's like magical on my skin that I could see a changed but the ingredient lists on amazon and on the box are not the same. I'm worried what they put in this that I can see immediate result so fast. I would like to ask if those ingredients is not harmful in the long run. Here is ingredient list
Aqua, alon barbad ensis leaf extract, polyglycerin-10 Hamamellis Virginiana leaf, steam extract Ganaderma atrum, mushroom extract, polysobate20, simmondsia chinensir seed oil, Pentylene glycol, Acrylatec10-30 alkyl acrylate Crosspolymer chitosan, crprylyl glycol, sodium hyaluronatc, phospholipids Retinol, Allantoin Hydroxyethy lcellulose, Chondrus, Glycine soja oil, Cellulose gum, Phenoxye Hianol.
    P. S 1)sorry for my English.
    2) I stopped using it at the moment until I know the answer none of this ingredients is not harmful.
    Thank you.
