- In this weeks episode of Musician Series, I discuss the not so well known band ,Budgie, and their last remaining static member and bass player, Burke Shelley.

Extremely fortunate to see Budgie many times in San Antonio. As a city, we love Budgie to this day. They always seemed to enjoy being here. Burke I wish you the best. One of my all time favorite bass players.

Sad to hear Burke Shelley died this week, loved the band for many years.
Budgie are "The Biggest Thing Since Powdered Milk" The original band, Shelley, Bourge and Phillips are true musicians. Respect to all other Budgie members. The music industry is obviously a difficult thing to get into. Some bands/artists have the financial lucky break and many thousands of other Top Quality bands/artists unfortunately don't.
The Maiden thing. Lie. The singer, forget his name now, used to hang around our dressing rooms drinking our beer, when we gigged in London before his boat came in.

Paul Day was a very early vocalist with Maiden, then Dennis Wilcox and then Paul Di'Anno. Day was around 1975ish, Wilcox around 1977ish so possibly one of those Steve?

And Budgie's Bandolier was a favourite album of Maiden’s Steve Harris, who saw Budgie at places like the Roundhouse in London, in the ’70s. Harris said, “I chose the song I Can't See My Feelings for Maiden to cover as a B-side, because I was a big fan of Budgie way back. My favourite album, at the time, being Bandolier and my favourite songs from their repertoire included I Can’t See My Feelings, Napoleon Bonaparte, and, of course, Breadfan.” Where did the 'trademark' Maiden gallop originate? Napoleon, of course :) And Maiden supported Budgie at Bingley Hall, Birmingham on 15 December 1979.
saw you at reading '81 been listening to you non stop for the last month since xmass man. i think budgie are the greatest easily the equal of sabbath more original then zep or purple. max respect to you mate. im flying the flag for budgie any chance i get . budgie deserves more recognition . lets see if we can get the band more into the public eye.ps im a muso as well as it happens.god bless

Budgie is a great band, one of my favourites. Greatly under appreciated, which is a great shame. The back catalogue is (mostly) top notch. Certainly more good than bad. How many bands ever achieve that?
That’s a fact. I play them a lot and people who’ve never heard them always say “where have they been my whole life?”
Fantastic band. . I saw them twice..back on their sell out Bandolier tour at Manchester Free Trade Hall, and years later in a rock pub in Bury , north of Manchester.
The metal band I was with played support to the Tony Bourge/Ray Phillips 4 piece band Tredegar.
Half their set was Budgie songs.
Metallica asked for Burke’s autograph when they found out he was at Cardiff Arena.
They deserved an easier ride.. grossly underrated , and such a hard working bunch of top level global musicians, songwriters and performers.

Started listening to Budgie back in 71'. My all time favourite metal band of all time. Have all their albums. Sadly Shelley passed away 10th January 2022.
there is a group of us in Israel who love Budgie since the 70's
Their debut is not Squawk but their self-titled debut and boy does it rock big style. A massive album. Check out 'Homicidal, Suicidal' which Soundgarden covered, 'The Author' and 'Nude Disintegrating Parachutist Woman' and you'll soon see what I mean. Came out in 1971 and although so often overlooked, made a seminal contribution to metal's later development with the emergence of the NWOBHM at the end of the 1970's and which in turn helped shape thrash. At least Metallica give them credit for influencing their sound and the covers of 'Breadfan' and 'Crash Course In Brain Surgery' brought a few royalties payments their way.

Also Zoom Club, Wondering What Everyone Knows, In For The Kill from The Album In For The Kill are excellent.
To me 'Never Turn Your Back On A Friend' has always been my favorite...not one note worng...chord progression wrong evety song perfect & the Killer drum solo on 'Your The Biggest Thing Since Powdered Milk' is unsurpassed as is the basswork on 'Baby Please Don't Go'!~
I find Your All Living In Cuckoo land including the title song among a few others like Turned To Stone on NightFlight are super-standouts :)

Great piece on a great and underrated band. I used to see them ALL the time in London..... every chance I got.... I was 15.... met them backstage once.... lovely blokes. They came up after the “ heavy hitters “ Sabbath, Zep,Purple... so they got bad press because the critics in the U.K. were down on Metal.... so they were lamparded as imitators.... which they weren’t at all... I got into them because I was sick to death of people shoving the aforementioned bug 3 down my throat.... I could relate to Budgie.
Now... point of interest... most times I saw Budgie at the Marquee in London they had the same support act and that act was Judas Priest!!! First time I saw em together Tipton wasn’t in the band , they were a 4 piece.... Halford wore a check shirt and jeans and had no stage presence but obviously had that amazing voice.... they both gigged together many times till Priest got signed to Gull and released RockaRolla.
Budgie lost ground around Impeckable but made a major comeback with the album Power Supply, this gave them a second wind and they played many festivals. Tony Bourge was replaced in guitar by Big John Thomas who sadly died.
It’s a big tragedy Budgie never we’re bigger..... Absolutely great band and a big part of my life growing up. If you check CZcams there’s an audio clip of Budgie and Priest encoring together, as bands did back in those days with a song called “ Running from my soul”.❤️🙏❤️Here it is....

Very sad to hear it,though I owned several of Thier classics,I got to hear most of the rest today,and it showed Thier distinctiveness and depth,I knew a lady near Canberra named Julie pearl who revered budgie,I got into them with her,as you say,unsung heroes along with American bands bang,dust and sir lord Baltimore,Uriah heep and Australia's own buffalo,all these bands give the so called big 3 a run for Thier money,when you listen to paranoids poor production and reflect that war pigs ripped vanilla fudge,iron man King crimson,and paranoid led Zeppelin,you wonder why people never shut up about it or how it stands up against the band's I mentioned earlier,but to me sabbath were neither the first nor the best heavy metal band,just a bad cream who and Zeppelin's

Van Halen("Mammoth") covered "In for the kill" Live in their early days. There's a '78 (I think.) version on YT.

Budgie and Iron Maiden were both promenant in the 80,s revival of HM in UK, in fact they both would have been well aware of each other, as they both played Reading rock festival which I attended in 1980. Budgie like Diamond Head, Samson and Tygers of Pan Tang, along with numerous others Raven, Venom, White Spirit, the list is endless just did not reach the heights they should have. Some of the former band members of these groups did make it however with other bands.
Budgie should be in the Rock'in Roll Hall of Fame !! My older brother turned me on to them around 80'. Me and all my friends loved them on vinyl
Sorry I have to add comment. Alessandro is right. Aortic surgery caused Burke not to be able to sing and play. I guess the "rinky dink" bands were a quiet way for Burke to release some energy and pain on the quiet.
I saw Budgie in Sydney in 2008 and 2009. It was Burke, Williams and Goldy. They were right on their game. Great shows.

Bought their albums in the 70's firstly because i liked the covers - this is in '73 as a 13 yr old - then of course because of their music - 1st listen I thought Burke Shelley was a girl, cos of the Dot Cotton voice - now feckin nearly 50 years later I find them on the Tube - glad they stayed underground, means they're real . . .
Whiskey River is the most amazing wicked groove ever. I also love Who Do You Want For Your Love. 💘
Back in the Sixties and early Seventies, Budgie was WAY cooler than the likes of Sabbath. Sabbath was more of a pub band. Budgie and the Groundhogs was for the cool dudes.

It's very interesting to hear you talk about the bass Burke used to play (despite I can't play any instruments). I really love hearing him playing bass, especially in Rocking Man and Who Do You Want For Your Love? !

At 4:36-4:44 you could've done your homework better about the small clubs and your assumption of a "Fall from Grace" to get him in those smaller clubs.
He went into emergency surgery before this, because his aorta nearly burst....which would've killed him.....and was told not to sing at all....anymore.....but if he did....after a very long time of healing.....he still shouldn't sing at all....but if he did....and if he pushed when he sang....he would end up in the ER again under similar circumstances.....but far more serious. And Burke's stubborn internal unrest to need to sing...brought him into smaller clubs so that the "spotlight" wasn't on him alone....so he could sing without pushing which to him meant "to not sound as good"!! And that was why the smaller clubs....not a fall from grace as you assumed! You are a smart guy and I can tell you care ....even though this was done about a year ago....I can tell even then you were hurrying to get your "Budgie bit" out in time before the world made you believe it was "old news" is unfortunately obvious! Not totally your fault....you're still young enough to be Influenced by outer forces beyond your own understanding that is still leading you! Take a breath....believe in yourself and do your homework!!

Top band, seen them three times and never disappointed
First album and Squawk are heavy albums, but they retained that sound throughout the 70’s. By Impeccable they were more melodic, drawing from other genres. Burke sounds more like John Lennon in the 90’s. ❤️
Sadly Burke has since passed away.

Check their website. The "fall from grace" was a stomach ulcer ( I think) that burke Shelly got in 2010 while touring Poland. it left him unable to sing and play at the same time. Now that he's mostly recoved its probably just been too long and he may feel too old to tour again.
Thank you for the information! I recently saw a video of him sessioning with some guys in Wales so it’s good he is still playing. He even has a Stingray bass now in place of P-bass.

In For The Kill was covered by Van Halen in their early days. Said album is my favorite Budgie. And I totally love all the albums from the seventies. The eighties albums were okay. They weren’t horrible by any means maybe a bit pedestrian. Still some strong tracks to be had on those 3 eighties albums. In my however. In For The Kill is a must own. Pete Boots’ drumming is so killer. I wonder what happened to him. Their first drummer Ray Phillips was a good one too he went to play with Tredefar with Bourge in the eighties. Ok time for the knives to come out. I for one don’t have a problem with Burke Shelley’s vocals. I got used to them. Really no different from Geddy Lee. The reason though Budgie didn’t make it was probably his vocals. It’s a make it or break it deal for people. Sadly.
