    I had the AT-lp120 and if you had the platter off and ran the motor it would do the same thing! I think your motor was fine! By the way all direct drive turntables will pulsate without the platter being on! The platter helps the motor keep motion and make the quartz lock work! I hope you didn't spend much on the motor!

      It was $145 shipped. I think the noise is the key. It had become unreliable after a five foot fall. It would start really slowly and make a bunch of noise and sometimes not even get up to speed - especially if it was cold.

    I've had my 140 for a couple years now, and I really like it. There were a couple things I had problems with in the beginning. The most severe were the loose tonearm bearings, which I ended up adjusting myself (and voiding the warranty almost immediately, but it was lockdown). That improved things immediately. The other one which I haven't been able to get around as easily is a slight hum in the system, but it was better than the first one I got, which went right back to Zzounds an hour after I first got it because the hum was much worse.
    The final one is not being able to use a lot of cartridges, especially moving coil carts, because the tonearm's so heavy. Other than that, it'll tide me over until I can get a Technics SL-100c. For its first year it was my primary vinyl ripping deck until I repaired my Music Hall mmf-2.2.

      I have two with no hum issues. The grounded RCA cords Audio Technica includes could be better. That might be your problem.

      I just had a chance to view and touch one exemplar myself. It just felt... Not entirely right. At startup it initially struggled to lock to speed but it was steady afterwards.
      Tonearm... well, vertical movement was smooth when zero balanced, without any resistance. No play in bearings. But lateral movement was jerky. The tonearm behaved springy in any point where I placed it over platter. Giving a breath didn't make it move. This led me to decision to stay away from this deck.

      Moving coil cartridges generally have lower compliance requiring higher tracking force. These just should match mid to heavier mass tonearms.

    That behavior is known as "cogging" and its normal without the platter, but the noise your old motor was making was not. My old JVC LA55 direct drive semi-automatic table from the early 80's has a ton of hours on it and its still going like brand new. I also have a really nice belt drive Harman Kardon T40 frorm the early to mid 80's and its still going as well, the platter on it weighs 2.2 pounds and ill put it up against most any table today for build quality, isolation etc. .

    Hi, just my 2 cents: the coils get hot when using the tt without a platter, the ic suffers also, depending on the configuration. :D. Every chinese clone tt says that on the manual :D

    @adamdavies163 Před rokem +1

    I think that all direct drive turntables 'cog' like that when the platter is removed, the ones i've worked on did anyway. My guess is that the spindle had been bent slightly with the impact.

    Audio Technica borrowed that brushless DC motor from a company called Gemini from one of their turntables (Pt1000) from back in the late 90s.. so they did a design that motor..

    Hello dear, how are you? I have a pair of Audio Technica AT-LP120XUSB and I notice that their torque is much lower in comparison to the torque of the AT-LP120USB (MK1) and also of your AT-LP140XP. My question: can I swap the motor for one of these? Are the electrical fittings the same? And the positions of the screws on the housing?

    Never run a direct drive motor with no load it's the designers intention to have that load and can feedback DC into the driver circuit

    No expert here but after watching your video I'm thinking the problem was just the motor being out of alignment. I own the same turntable; I knew when you showed the motor making that jerky rotating motion that this was normal having seen this on my turntable. I'm guessing that during the accident the spindle motor was knocked out of alignment which caused the spinning base of the motor to touch the sides of the metal plate it protrudes from thus the noise and speed issues. I don't know if it had been a motor alignment issue that this would have been an easy fix. Perhaps a new motor would have still been necessary.

    • @antigravityworkshop1436
      @antigravityworkshop1436  Před rokem

      That makes sense. I didn't really know that motor alignment was a thing. Wish there was a video about that! Thanks for pointing that out.

      About a year and a half old. It took about a five foot fall and landed right on the top side. Surprised the motor was all that was damaged.

      @@antigravityworkshop1436 i use it with audiophile equipment and it doesn't let me down, not one minute! It's roughed turntable but apropriate for audiophile purposes too for sure, of course it needs different cartridges which is not big deal to replace!
