  • Part 3 of 5: Hunting big woods mountain bucks can be some of the most difficult hunting there is for whitetails. In this 5 part series, Beau Martonik breaks down how to scout and hunt these public land whitetails in the Appalachian Mountains that most of us call home in Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, New York and more.
In this episode, Beau walks through exactly how he is using onX Hunt to locate timber cuts, why you should hunt clearcuts/logging cuts, the different ages of cuts, and how to setup on them to kill a buck.

    Beau,
I love your videos, great advice that has improved my hunting abilities.
I hail from Mckean county but live up near Syracuse now. Luckily the public land up here is similar to back home.
When I come home to hunt I incorporate the logging cuts into my game plan.
Last year we were able to get my 9yr old daughter a doe that was bedding in a 5-8yr old cut.
    Keep up the great work!

Beau, nice video man! Our hunting/scouting styles are identical. So much that if you ever came down here and hunted south central PA we might end of in the same tree, lol. I feel like it took me a couple years of reading the hunting beast to figure out for myself what you explained in these videos in just a few minutes. They're really on point and very informative. One thing I struggle with is wind based bedding. You explain in this video that they want that wind over their back. I used to agree 100% and saw it first hand with cameras hung directly over beds. But I don't think its as simple as that main west wind over a bucks back sitting on an east facing slope. I used to only hunt east slopes b/c of this from what I learned from Infalt. But just this spring I decided to scout some west facing slopes here in southern PA in the big public woods and found some awesome bedding in thick laurel patches. I found a buck bed worn to the dirt back in May, I used to always see these spots on my map but I never wanted to bother scouting it on foot b/c I believed back then that nothing would bed there b/c it wasn't right for our common west wind. I learned now that is not really the case. They just need to feel that they have some type of advantage.

I’ve been using the on X Hunt app for several years now & I don’t know how many times I’ve looked at the satellite & topo map prior to going & chose a stand location without having set foot on the area, and more times than not, I end up seeing deer. I used it to set up near where I guessed a big 11 point was bedding, and I was off by 100 yards because I jumped him off his bed at almost exactly the point I’d planned to put my stand.

I'm set up in about 8-10 year old cut about 40 yards off the edge that's thick pine trees with a stream going through the pines. I'm getting single doe's pretty much daily. I got a picture of an 8 pointer 2 days ago. In the photos he stays to the side just enough to set the camera off and he hasn't been back since. My trail cam is along an old logging road with 2 scrapes with 2 rubs as well. Do you think he will be back or he's spooked?
