    In the scene, shown here, where Madeline Kahn says 'flames, flames, flames on the side of my face' it was all adlibbed by her and the director loved it so much he kept it, and the casts response to her, in the film. You see Tim Curry smiling and Martin Mull (Colonel Mustard) looking on in surprise :D

    • @adrianmcmahon5731
      @adrianmcmahon5731 Před 2 lety +1

      Madeline Kahn was such a fantastic comedic actress, Young Frankenstein, High Anxiety and of course Blazing Saddles, but the flames speech 8s what I always think of when she gets mentioned

  • @Elerad
    @Elerad Před 2 lety +45

    Tim Curry's energy, and the brilliant line deliveries of Madeline and Eileen, make this movie so much fun. Honorable mention to Martin Mull as well, though. As a mystery it's awful, but as a comedy it's a gem in my opinion. I laugh quite a bit at this one. My problems with the endings are that the first one sort of ruins the whole idea of who actually killed Mr. Boddy. The second one works, and I think is the best of the three, and the third is contradicted by events we saw in the movie in regards to the movements of certain characters. Also, despite the movie's writer being a huge fan of Agatha Christie, he doesn't seem to quite understand what made her so brilliant, and so he can't live up to her. By this I mean that he doesn't do an adequate job of sprinkling in tidbits of information and clues for the audience to notice. This is at least partly, I think, because of his desire to make each of the three endings work. So instead he fails on both counts. Oh well, don't mean to sound like I'm going off on the film, which is really a favorite of mine, and one I've watched about a dozen times over the years.

      Although i don't love this movie, there is one whodunnit i love that, incidently, came eleven years before this movie and was a marvellous movie itself.
      Agatha christie's Murder on the orient express(1974).
      That movie is one of the best murder mystery/whodunnit i have seen. Boasting a humungous star cast with the likes of Albert Finney, Ingrid Bergman, Sean Connery, Anthony Perkins, Vanessa Redgrave, Martin Balsam and directed by one of my favourite directors, Sidney Lumet, it really is an adaptation that holds even today.
      P.S. I watched the 2017 one too that was directed by Branagh, and though it is different, i liked it.

For those who've never seen it, five famous detectives, each an expy of a famous literary or film detective, are invited for to a mansion for dinner and murder. Each is accompanied by a companion of some sort. Another stellar cast. In fact, Eileen Brennan was in it as well
    David Niven & Maggie Smith as Dick & Dora Charleston (based on Nick & Nora Charles of the "Thin Man" series)
    Peter Sellers as Sydney Wang (based on Charlie Chan). Accompanied by his adopted son, just as Chan was usually accompanied by a son in the movies
    James Coco as Milo Perrier (based on Hercule Poirot). Accompanied by his chauffer played by James Cromwelll
    Peter Falk as Sam Diamond (bast on Sam Spade). Accompanied by his secretary played by Eileen Brennan
    Elsa Lanchester as Jessica Marbles (based on Jane Marple). Accompanied by her aged former childhood nurse.

    The best combination of comedy, who-dunnit, and suspense that ever came out of the 80s. I have my own copy, of course. 😎👍

    I finally understood and enjoyed this movie when I was an adult. It was before it’s time.

    There's a feature length episode of Family Guy called "And Then There Were Fewer". At first it seemed to be following a standard murder mystery plot similar to Agatha Christie's works, (which makes it one of my personal favourites as I love reading such books) but now I'm fairly sure that Clue was its inspiration.

    I heard somewhere that there are Rocky Horror Picture Show-like midnight showings of Clue which amuses me to no end. I also saw a video on here of a high school doing it as a school play.

    There's some top notch talent in this movie. Imagine what they could have done with better material. Individually, in other projects, we've seen how they all can excel. A fun movie, but a real missed opportunity for something truly great.

    Why Madeline Khan wasn't a major star is one of the greatest Hollywood mysteries to me.

    Good review. I do believe there was a picture book of the film that included several stills of the 4th ending. One of them being with Wadsworth inside the car making a break for it only to discover one of the dogs being in there with him.

    I've always loved this movie. Simple plot that relies on good actors to make the most out of their characters.

    I honestly thought I was the only person who even knew this movie existed let alone enjoyed watching it. I own it on DVD and it is a go to on a rainy day for me.
