He got the Oscars due to the fact that Slumdog Millionaire was probably one if the hardest films to direct in the last 20 years. And to pull it off so well was incredible to say the least.

As for the meaning, I respect that Dark Knight was more meaningful to you. But in the big picture, Slumdog spoke more to non-comic book/Nolan fans

Oh Really? The Dark Knight is the most significant picture of the century. 10 years later and people are still raging about The Dark Knight. The film succeeded way above its genre.

Gus Van Sant, Stephen Daldry and Ron Howard should have been replaced with:
Darren Aronofsky, Christopher Nolan and Martin McDonagh.

I agree that Nolan is a brilliant director. I do believe he deserved a nomination as did the Dark Knight. But I don't see comic books movie dismissed at all, they have been Hollywood bread maker for over a decade now. I think Bollywood and Bollywood movies are a lot more dismissed as "funny, crazy" stuff than comic books. Proof is after slumdog there wasn't a single other India based movie to make to the elite awards since then.

The Dark Knight deserved a Best Picture and Director nod over The Reader! But The Hurt Locker was suppose to be released in 08 and that would've won over Slumdog and not screwed over Inglourious Basterds! Ehh everything happens for a reason I guess!
