  • Unionized graduate students who work at University of California campuses and graduate student workers at the University of Southern California are threatening Thursday to walk off their jobs in response to escalating tensions surrounding pro-Palestinian protests at schools.
    The unionized members who work at UC campuses, including UCLA, UC Irvine, UC Riverside and UC San Diego, voted to authorize leadership to call a strike on Wednesday. Teaching and research assistants who are also graduate students at the universities are members of the union.
    Graduate students who work in similar capacities at USC filed unfair labor practice charges with the National Labor Relations Board, which oversees labor matters involving private-sector employers in response to treatment of protesters on campus.
    United Auto Workers Local 4811 represents thousands of UC graduate student workers and reported that 79% of the union members approved the strike authorization.
    UAW Local 4811 is asking the UC schools to give amnesty to all academic employees and students who face arrest or disciplinary actions for protesting. The union wants the students to have guarantees of freedom of speech and political expression on campus and is asking for researchers to be able to opt out of funding sources tied to the Israeli Defense Force.

    I am a retired UCI medical school professor. I visited the protest encampment site a week ago. It was completely peaceful and respectful. Shame on UCI administration for stifling the speech of their students.

    It's unprecedented that you have police, carrying hand me down military weapons, acting on behalf of a extremist FOREIGN goverment on a campus to break up a protest of US Citizens who are asking to divest from a Apartheid state and stopping war crimes that are paid for with with US taxpayer dollars .A completely reasonable request.... It's uncharted waters,and should be extremely disturbing for any american, no matter what side of the political spectrum you fall, that another country has this level of influence over the U.S.

    My son is at UCLA. He’s sick of this crap and all the non-students on campus. We are paying a ton of money for his education. And we can care less about the concerns of professors over something that is happening thousands of miles away. Thank God they cleared from campus all the idiots on both sides of this debate.
    They should fire any faculty member that further disrupts the school year due to politics. That’s BS. They can go protest downtown all they want.

    • @Satiro723
      @Satiro723 Před 15 dny +1

      The inherent nature of protest is disruption. What are they doing to protest downtown? A padres game? You stated "we can care less about the concerns of professors over something that is happening thousands of miles away." Then why should anyone care about your concerns? Because you a ton of money for his education. Then you shouldn't have sent him to a public California university. Did you look up the last wild cat or labor strikes on the campus or the entire UC system?

    • @ricklefty6345
      @ricklefty6345 Před 14 dny

      @@Satiro723 so based on your reply, you are arguing that this is perfectly fine to rob students of their opportunities to an education because the nature of protest is “disruption.” It would be disruptive to to take over an elementary school and not allow those students to leave. Is that ok with you too? Because this is the essence of what these faculty members are attempting to do. Students are gearing up for graduation and life after school, a university shutdown would place their lives on hold over something that is happening in another continent thousands of miles away. So yes we can care less about the politics involved in that situation. And recent reports showed that there majority of students could care less too.
      When you are threatening to further injure students that were already injured due to COVID restrictions, you are not the good guys.

    • @Satiro723
      @Satiro723 Před 14 dny

      @@ricklefty6345 You are correct. Disruption is an unfortunate aspect of protest. But that is due to the fact that at time it is the only way highlight issues. If you read the charters for the university protests, the students asking for their universities to cut off investments from companies linked to Israel's war in Gaza. While demands may vary from campus to campus, this is the shared focus. Most news you watch here is about them being pro-hamas, without ever highlighting the demands of the strike. While the protesters wave the Palestinian flag, the demands they make are material and directly related to the universities they are attending.
      Also your example of not letting elementary students to leave doesn't make sense my guy. That's kidnapping. I suggest you look up the history of high school and university sit-in and walk out protests. This might give you better examples to use than the made up situations in your head.
