First red flag of an irresponsible customer is letting their 5 year old answer the door and let a total stranger in. I’ve been to 1 or 2 homes where the kids practically ran the household while I was there.

What I used to do is any after hours calls you take a credit card over the phone when they place the call for the service call charge. And let them know that this is a non-cancelable fee. customers would shotgun the call. Meaning that whoever got there first got the job. I’d pull up in the driveway. There is already a heating company there. I feel your anger.
We always take credit card payment if there is no previous history with the customer
Doctors more and more frequently are charging for missed appointments, seems like a fair practice for you to charge for a situation like this.

The other thing I dislike just as much is when the client calls numerous companies including yours, does not give any company time to call back, and wakes everyone up from sleep in middle of night and say, “oh i called other companies and someone already on their way!” In the end some need to learn “respect/appreciate your techs time!” Nice work Mikey Pipes!

I've had so many times that I was sent to a tenant occupied home and told to 'just go in they are expecting you' by my office, only to find only a child there (under 18).
Now that i've gone from active Field Tech to Field Supervisor, I've put a stop to THAT. My office dispatch was more worried about the schedule than the rules.
I put my foot down, owner backed me up.
You DON'T enter a home without adult supervision. I don't even let me Techs enter a home if a minor opens the door and says 'Mom said to come in'. Only going to enter when an adult comes into view and lets them in.
It is too easy to be blamed for something going missing, even if it was just misplaced, because you are a stranger coming into their home.And even if they find the misplaced item, do you think they will apologize for blaming you? Not at all.
They already don't trust a service provider because they don't WANT to have to call us out.
And it is impossible to build trust when they wont even meet you at the door.
And they didn't even value your time. That whole house is dysfunctionaly run.

I responded to a no heat call as few years back. Three different companies, me and two others arrived exactly at the same time. Evidently this nut job called several companies and I guess whoever showed up first in his mind got the call. Totally disrespectful and obviously did not care about anyones time.

Anyone who understands knows you're completely correct for being pissed. One of the most frustrating things is when customers don't respect you. It's a 50/50 relationship especially when professionalism is involved. It goes both ways.

Unfortunately this happens, if they pay, the pain goes away. That’s how it goes. Mikey there was a company trying to replicate our business. They were called thinking it was us and to find out a red pickup with no decals or company logos would come out, try to maintenance the unit, only to find out they broke it in the dead heat of summer and gave us bad reviews. Contacts our actual company to complain only to find out it was not us. I hope you get past this and realize there are scums out there with no experience trying to rip people off. Just keep your cool and collect

What’s almost as good is when the other guy has it apart when you get there and he’s telling them he has to run for a part. As you’re telling them you have the part in your truck to fix and how inconsiderate they are for not canceling you. THEN they have the audacity to ask you if you can sell the part to the other guy. Yep same thing happened to me when I worked in crap residential. See people will grab the phone book and go down the list a call 30 companies to get someone out. Then forget who they talked to, who called them back, who confirmed, what times ect. Then I get there and theres a truck in the drive. I was under orders to go inside and collect $99 from them. (2004 prices)
As much as I love residential, I would love absolutely love to work on rooftop units all day long and I would probably even take like a good size pay cut just to do commercial rooftop units all day long. Can someone help me out please either in New York or in Florida I ain’t cheap though.

She called probably 3 different places seeing who she could get the quickest and let the land lord pay if she was paying she'd of waited till a regular business day
Your frustration was understandable. Hey, at least you didn't cuss or use vulgarity. She was not sorry and had zero remorse. She acted like it just "happened" and she had nothing to do with it, like it's just a random event. People need to take responsibility. When they immediately apologize "my bad" and make reparations like "what can I do to make this right?" it makes all the difference in the world. So, no, I don't blame you at all.
To avoid this in the future I would suggest an advanced security deposit for all emergency calls. Don't even schedule it until you get the deposit which can be applied toward their fee, but it's something to pay for the drive out in cases like this.
And I got to tell you if you if I was in the situation 612 months ago, they definitely would’ve been some appropriate four letter words used by me towards her

My system sends out a text message, confirming the appointment when the technician is in route as a job get started and upon completion and even notification when we get paid which is upon completion, this pathetic woman wouldn’t even get out of bed and sensor five-year-old son to open the door that shows the kind of trash I’m dealing with

I agree with all you said to that woman Mike. The only thing I think you did wrong was enter the house and proceed to the basement without an adult present. They are dreadful parents that let a small child open the door to a stranger. The woman on the phone is a piece of garbage for not having the respect to call and cancel. Precharge trip charges are not uncommon and perhaps you should begin billing that way.👍🇨🇦
I responded to a service call several years ago. It was a weekday, no holiday. I responded within two hours to the new customer which I thought was pretty quick. When I got to the job there was another plumbing truck in the yard. I think they might have called several plumbers and the first one that showed up won the job. They never called me to say they had someone else to do the job. :(
Yeah, that happens every so often. It’s happened to me twice I believe in my career and it’s quite disgusting but it is what it is.

This was a waste of time that could have been prevented with a little bit of effort on the homeowner’s part. Once her system was up and running she could have called the Pipe Doctor and canceled the call. By having the kid open the door, she was trying to avoid Mike, she was wrong. I think Mike handled it very well.
It sounded like you DIDN’T get paid by credit card or check for that emergency call. I hope I’m wrong. I would bill her and if she doesn’t pay it, I’d turn it over to collections. To me, it’s the principle of the thing more than the money. If that scenario occurs, hopefully it will teach her a valuable lesson. Wishing you the best😀

This happens to us once in a while. It's always someone who sounds clueless like this lady. I usually, not always still get paid. I also call before I send someone so that avoids confusion. I have called them told them I have someone on the way and they are confused because they called 5 other people and don't know who's who. I usually just cancel those and don't show up. I don't want to work for those type of people either. 99% of the time someone else is going out there. On emergency after hours calls there should be a way for them to enter payment info that is non refundable and boldly stated on the page with a disclaimer that after they press the pay button there is no coming back.
This also rarely happens for me as well and I figured if I created a couple videos about it, the CZcams revenue will make up for the lost revenue of me getting up at 7 o’clock in the morning on a Sunday to ring this ladies doorbell at 8 o’clock so she doesn’t even have a decency to open the door at eight unless the kid open the door for me that shows you her priorities, and the respect she has for others which is nothing

That’s why emergency calls you always call before you show up.
And that’s why I have a system in place that sends a text message to confirming the appointment another text message that states the technician is in route and another technic text message that the job has started. She also got a text message at the job was canceled after I walked out of that house.

that is what happens when its the tenants they say whatever cause there not planning to pay that why if we call before we go to confirm what we are going out there for it happens alot and to confirm who we are calling for payment if its a tenant/landord issues and to make sure there is an adult as least someone

I have a coworker that woke up at 2 in the morning for an overflowing toilet, he tried talking them tgrough it but the woman insisted he come and fix it, my co worker gets up drives to the shop to grab the van and when he is about to leave lady calls saying they fixed it and didnt need him anymore.
My coworker tells my biss what happened in the morning and was upset so he wanted to call the customer to let her know what she did was inconsiderate and gives her a call around 7 she picks up and tells my boss not to call so early in tge morning!

I would've handled it differently. Explained that we black list you from our company, unless you pay the dispatch fee, no hourly fees required. As a penalty for not canceling.
