I’d buy it. I always hated this scene. It feels like a complete break in the show. So for it to be an outtake, I would buy it. There’s a few movements from SMG that feel very Un-acted.

Bringing in darkness where the cliche would show light, but then showing humor when everything seems depressing and the cause already lost. Dehumanizing characters who started off good but suffered too much, humanizing characters who tried to deal with their mental injuries by acting like a robot through some simple laughter.
It might not have been planned, but the way the scene ended up is bloody brilliant. The end of the world is coming, everyone's upset, worried, and the two simply needed a few moments like this in order not to explode from fear
Great editing in that you don't see her face when she says 'And I've been sleeping with a Spike.' Instead you see her face straight after as she looks up at him, worried about his reaction. This subtlety gives the scene it's power.
I'm almost certain this is a blooper but I'm so glad that it was kept in. It's so sweet to see Giles get the giggles and when Buffy joins in, it's just adorable. A wonderfully unexpected moment of light relief, in an otherwise dark and grim episode.
in one laugh, Anthony Stewart Head, provides the catharsis that the entirety of season 6 needed. definitely one of the best moments in season 6 and the show in general. I actually like a lot of season 6 even though it gets a lot of flak and I understand why. There's some really, really bad episodes, some poor pacing choices, and some missed opportunities. but I love what it tried to do, and some things it did exactly right. My two favorite moments in season 6 is this moment, and by contrast, the very unfunny but devastating moment of Buffy begging Tara not to forgive her in Dead Things, one of the most powerful moments in TV Drama.

actually you're almost right - it was actually a blooper - Anthony Steward Head lost control and they decided it was better than him being serious so they edited that in with Buffy's new reaction
It sounds so absurd from Giles' perspective, that uncontrollable laughter is a natural response. And Buffy getting roped in after reealizing how stupid it sounds just completes the scene. Maybe later scenes should have been adjusted to account for the sudden but brief mood change, but that moment feels so real for the characters.
At I never understood is that she never gets anyone from the council for her slayer work. I mean they should want her to do her work all the time hence at least give her some kind of money.

Maybe they were worried about them asking for too much danger pay ... but no, fuck that, she's your one soldier who needs to focus on killing demons, and they won't cover her living costs? How did this never occur to me before?
Yeah that bugged me too. She was able to get Giles' job back with a raise or money paid for the time he wasn't her watcher (I've slept since watching that episode) I don't get why they didn't at least offer to support her after the death of her mom. Someone else brought it up but, she's your main source for saving the world, why would you not do everything in your power to make sure she is up to the task? Like not being homeless, or having to work multiple jobs, therefore stretching herself thin and making her a possibly less effective slayer.
This always bothered me too, but you know why I think it has never been brought up before. I think there are two reasons. In other cultures, the slayer lives with and is supported by her watcher (we saw this come up briefly with Kendra). In addition, the slayer has a short life expectancy and as crass as it sounds, many of them didn't live long enough to be beyond teen years and need any sort of independent life. I think that's why in a nutshell, though it would still be nice once a slayer comes of age that she is supported by the council in the same way the watcher is. I mean Giles got paid AND had a job as the school librarian for much of the time, then owned the magic shop.
yeah, I was also thinking about the short life expectancy. I would've had there be like a bank account or a rolling trust fund for the slayers that just passes onto the next slayer and so on. That way, the money just wouldn't be floating out in space when a slayer dies.
I saw Buffy for the first time only a year and a half ago. Before this I had seen Anthony Head only as Uther Pendragon in the Merlin series. Well, I must admit it was strange to see him like THIS. 😅😂😂
Bottom lines is that things tend to fall to pieces when Giles isn't around. He's pretty much the glue that holds the fragments of Buffy's world together.
Of all the reactions they COULD have gone with.... anger, sympathy, sorrow, disdain etc.... but to just plain laugh in her face..... THAT is real life. On Film. No drama, no story just "You did fucking WHAT - hahahahahahhaa" which is exactly how your friends would react to you doing something monumentally stupid. "You're a total tit - now lets hug".
You look at Rupert's face as she regales him with her story, and you realize he has to be scared with how things've gone quite literally here to "Hell in a handbasket" as the saying goes; what with Dawn getting addicted to stealing, Anya having rejoined her gang she'd been involved in, and this assorted naughtiness that these people got into, including Willow being a magic addict.
Am I the only person who felt like buffy brought out the true humanity in spike? Angel turned all psycho cereal killer without a soul but spike didn't have a soul and still was gentle enough to love buffy... Even with the demon inside he was a good man... He didn't change much once he had a soul.. I get that SMG had an issue with Spuffy, I thought they were great together..

I despised this moment upon first viewing, I'm like what the hell is happening, it just seemed so off. This poor girl is going through a living hell as she's bearing her soul to her trusted mentor, and he...breaks down in hysterics? But it has since become one of my favorite scenes of any that I can remember seeing on any show ever. It would have been one thing if Sarah just stared at him and burst into tears, but after the initial shock, you can see her slowly allowing the absurdity of the moment as it starts to sink in. First it's a look mimicking betrayal, like how can you not feel for me Giles, which slowly morphs into, "Oh damn...yeah this is such a pathetic list of bad, how can it not be hilarious what I'm actually trying to deal with right now?" It was such a beautiful gift Giles gives her, the ability to step away from the drowning swamp of all her issues to experience such an important spiritual timeout. Is the humor the totality of the list? Or is it almost all of the list with the kicker, "Oh yeah and I'm dealing with it all by bumping uglies my long time nemesis, the bleach blonde vampire." It doesn't really matter. It is a brief, well-earned mental vacation from soul crushing grief, and a priceless unforgettable moment in TV history. As surprising as it is cathartic, and beautiful.
