    What’s looks to be simple hand off, can only happen if there is someone in support to take the pass and score a try. That’s what great players do. They are in the right place at the right time. And never give up until the play is dead. Watch how many times one more pass would result in a try, and there is no one there to take it.

    Regarding your question, 'what is worth more, the try or the setup?' Most followers understand that the setup is the most important component of a try, that is why the two halves are given so much acclaim within a team, because they are in charge of the setup. But, in Australian rugby league (at least) we understand that so many try's would not have been possible, have materialized, have been generated, if other members of the team were not backing-up. It is hammered into us by our coaches that we must always back-up no matter how exhausted we are. And, lets' face it, by the 60th minute onwards, mostly we are totally f....ed, and the passengers in the team are no longer backing-up. We understand that to those that back-up religiously, no matter how they are feeling, to those must go special plaudits. Terry Lamb from Canterbury Bankstown back in the 80's was one of these people and it has been engendered into our players to the point that it stands as the point of difference for us between winning and losing. Cheers Sean.

  • @Flashblackyc4
    @Flashblackyc4 Před 3 lety +3

    It’s a combination of both. The best fullbacks who score tries are known for being good support players. The number 6 and 7 (the playmakers - who are usually the highest paid players) orchestrate the magic and then FBs like Billy are always lurking to finish off ‘the play’ to score the try. However the best FBs can be playmakers themselves. The elite FBs can be playmakers as well as read and control defence. That’s why Billy is the best, he can do all those things to a high level.

    Set plays are the priority as opposed to the actual try, when im at training, and someone gets a try but they didn't use their teammates, my coach will not count it as a try because instead of passing the ball, the player was greedy and tried to push through the defense.

    • @bobbobskin
      @bobbobskin Před 3 lety +1

      You make a really good point. Rugby (And I'm talking both league and union here) are sports where the team is far more important than the personal. Players who are for "solo glory" are bad rugby players, as often you need to "take the hit for the team" to "absorb defenders" and get them out of place. This is another key difference between American football and both Rugby codes. In NFL, only a limited number of people in the team ever
      expect to score a touchdown. If we look at Rushed TD, that's running backs, and when the QB throws the ball, it's typically to the WR (just look at the NFL player stats table).
      Now if we are talking Rugby (either code, but more strongly I would suggest in League) - everyone on the field has a pretty decent chance to cross the line.
      There is a really interesting scientific paper on try scoring in Rugby (union) with statistics from 2003 international games, looking at the number of tackles in the play, the number of people the ball was passed to, how far the push started etc...
      www.napier.ac.uk/~/media/worktribe/output-813839/an-examination-of-try-scoring-in-rugby-union-a-review-of-international-rugby-statistics.pdf
      something anyone who has an interest in Rugby and has come from a sports statistics standpoint (like NFL is full of) should read and argue about...

      @SilentHotdog28 Před 2 lety

      @@bobbobskin Yeah it's annoying when players are constantly going for the solo plays in NRL, it doesn't tend to happen too much because of how they are trained, but it does get annoying when a player has open space and the ball carrier doesn't pass because they want to get the try themselves. Justin Olam did it last year and it cost us a match, he had Josh Addo-Carr on the outside with nothing but space and didn't pass, was held up and we lost. Now I like Justin Olam, but he has been caught out doing that a few times here and there and it can be frustrating.
      Also on you part about any position scoring, I love it in any sport when the people who don't normally score, do so. In AFL when a defender scores a goal it's amazing, some players have gone their whole career without scoring or, only scoring a few goals. In soccer I love it when the goalie scores :D In both forms of Rugby when the big forwards barge over it is awesome.
      On a side note, I'm glad that you specified, It's annoying when people call Union 'Rugby' Which one mothertrucker? There are 2 types. I didn't grow up watching Rugby League or Union, I didn't know there were 2 types, so when I started getting into Rugby League, I would search for 'Rugby' videos and it was never what I was looking for, I was like "What is this?" After probably 2 years of watching League I had worked out the differences over time, but jeez, not fun for new fans when searching for material. Specify people.

    The main thing that makes him the greatest fullback ever is his positioning. When the opposition kicks downfield to gain territory Slater would always be in the best spot, he would take those kicks on the full and return the ball further down field than other fullbacks.

  • @Stargaze314
    @Stargaze314 Před 3 lety +1

    Re your question...some simple looking tries/plays on the end of an assist, while not always spectacular, show the player has the ability to time runs to perfection to split the defence and that they are consistently working to be near the ball-carrier in support. That is next level ability to read the game in motion and work ethic to be in position - doing the work 100% of the time even when there is a 1% chance there will be a play that will come of it. But that 1% is what wins games at the highest levels. Billy was always a player that could create a play form nothing, turning the tide of a game.

    The build up to a try is just as important as scoring the try brother. The guys setting the trys up are usually the numbers 6 and 7 (standoff and half back) which we call the 'playmakers', with number 1 (fullback) running in support. The numbers 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13 (forwards) usually run the ball up for the first couple of tackles and then play makers use the last tackles to try set up try-scoring plays

    It's all about the points, and whoever puts the ball down over the line gets the tick.
    But everyone sees who made the try happen.
    I don't know if it's only called an 'assist' in basketball if it results in points.
    But in Rugby League the 'offload' is a big part of the game.
    If a player can draw in 2, 3, or 4 defenders and still manage to offload the ball.
    The main player stats are: How many tries they scored, how many metres they made, how many tackles they made, how many offloads.
    And the kickers have their points and hit/miss percentage.

Billy Slater is indeed one of the finest ever fullbacks in Rugby League, representing both his state (Queensland) and his country. A try in Rugby League is worth 4 points and the conversion is worth two points. A field goal is worth one point. Your question about which is more impressive, the try scorer or the try assist. I think it depends. Johnathan Thurston was great at setting up tries, but didn’t score many himself. Although he didn’t score many, he is considered one of the best players ever. The highlights of JT on CZcams don’t really do him justice, as they can’t really show his control of games in a highlights package. 4 points is 4 points. It makes no difference how much work, or how less work goes into it. You celebrate each 4 points the same, because that is the team achievement. After the celebration of the 4 points, you can then acknowledge the effort of a stand out performance if their was one, as a separate achievement, the same as you would admire a singular effort of brilliant play making, that perhaps didn't directly result in a try, but maybe pivotal to the teams endeavour and result. That, at least, is how I see it. Cheers Sean, TC.

    Mate, to answer youre question in the 8th minute simply, every try indeed is worth 4 points, but some do add more value than others. A single try that has several hands in it can lift the scoring team, while hurting the other and lead to more trys being scored off the back of this phenomenon. But of you are referring specifically to the importance of billy scoring the try shown that triggers your question, billy was the perfect positional fullback. A full back in attack is expected to be following the ball 6/6 tackles for this exact scenario. Billy perfected positional play as a full back and has now set the bar for thr likes for james tedesco, tom trbojevic, and ryan papenhuyzen (just to name an exceptional few). Billy changed tge was a number 1 conducts himself the same way joey changed the way a 7 did. I sincerely hope you enjoy your dive into the world of rugby league, although foreign to you, this is the sport i grew up with and will always love, i hope you see the beauty of it the same way I and many other fans do. Some of the game’s best players are playmakers, meaning they don’t score many tries they just set the tries up. Which is why the NRL’s best player’s highlight packages aren’t that spectacular to the average viewer. The reason Billy is considered the best is because his position (fullback) was never a playmaker position, only a ball running (try scorer) position, but he was the first fullback that could do both. You need to understand that there's more to a try than just placing the ball down. There's so much that goes into it, from the line break to the support run to the pass and the score. Usually there's even more than that...

      Eugen Tarau k genuine question , how? Belcher in the late '80's then Lockyer in the '90's played as fullbacks that often lined up as first receiver on the other side of the ruck to the half or 5/8 , effectively giving the attack two playmakers to set off from.

    We have try assists as important stats, so if a player breaks through the line and sets up and try for someone else it’s a try assist. It’s not all about tries it’s how a player influences the game and makes others play around them. As much as I hate Cameron smith he has been the most influential player even tho he’s not the flashiest or scored the most tries

  • @Love-mm2cu

    Try’s do get allot my credit then they deserve but In saying that it’s all about positioning if he wasn’t there there would be none to pass to u know what I mean positioning yourself to be offloaded to and knowing how to be at the right place at the right time is a skill in itself 👌🏼

  • @capatheist
    @capatheist Před 3 lety

    Being unselfish with the try is much more a part of our sporting culture.
    You’ll be looked at very poorly if you forgo passing to an easy try. In order to attempt to add numbers to your own record

    • @capatheist
      @capatheist Před 3 lety

      You’ll occasionally see star players sharing the tries around to the whole team when they are comfortably leading the score.
      Or perhaps you and a team mate break the pack and run the whole field together and there’s no nearby defenders, the player who has more tries that day will most often let the other guy ground it.
      But you’ll also see the whole team feed every try to a star player if he’s about to break a record or something.
      So yeah it’s preety across the board how we feel about unselfish scoring

    it is a team sport, not a one star sport, sorry but that tends to be the difference between Australian team sport and American team sport. Here if you try that "I am the star player" rubbish, you will have that knocked out of you by either the coach, your team mates or the Aussie public. We have what is called the "tall poppy" syndrome here, basically don't get a big head or it will get knocked off very quickly
