Michael Jordan on his greatest rivalries with Dominique Wilkins and Joe Dumars (1991)

  • Legend Michael Jordan of the Chicago Bulls talks about his greatest rivals in the NBA. Among others, Dominique Wilkins for the way he and Nique brought the best offensive, one-upmanship and showmanship out of each other, and Joe Dumars for how hard they played each other defensively.
    I own no rights to this clip. It was taken from the 1991 video 'Michael Jordan's Playground'. As a big fan of Dominique Wilkins (and Joe Dumars, for that matter) I recalled the clip, had a look for it but couldn't find it, so once I found it on 'Playground' I thought I'd do my bit and get it on CZcams.

      There's probably a lot of truth and sincerity in his assessment of his battles with Joe Dumars. After all, Jordan's greatest rivalries were with the Pistons and he was almost always pitted against the Pistons "shutdown man" Dumars.
      But I also think that Dumars is the only guy in the Bad Boys lineup who he could allow himself to pay homage to (maybe other than Rodman, who after this interview became his Bulls teammate). Dumars was one of the only Piston players who didn't walk out at the conclusion of the 1992 finals loss to the Bulls. Dumars was also well-known for being the hardworking, defensive yet non-trash talking or overly abusive Bad Boys member. I don't think you'll find many (if any) tributes of Isaiah Thomas by Jordan and Thomas was arguably a better point guard than Magic (therefore the best point guard in the NBA) in the late 80s and early 90s.

    Joe Dumars was a wily and cerebral defender. He studied the tendencies of the opponents and used them for his advantage on the court. Against Jordan, Dumars would shadow him and directed him to other defenders. He rarely was able to beat Jordan one-on-one on the defense (but nobody could do that either against MJ), but he would try to push him to double or triple team. At the end, nobody could stop MJ, but Dumars was able to slow him just a bit.

He peaked at 9 RPG one year. Even in today's NBA, HOW MANY SF's will get 25 PPG and 9 RPG in a season??? Not many at all!
    I get that he wasn't any special passing and defense wise. But he was STILL a phenomenal player! Score hella points on pretty good efficiency. 46% for such a dominant scorer is a good clip. And he shot 81% from the line for his career as well.
    Dominant alpha dog scoring is the MOST PREMIUM ASSET in hoops! Guys that have that ability DESERVE a certain amount of respect! Everybody can't be a MJ, Bron, Bird, or Kobe! Those guys combined great scoring and great all around ability in an epic package. That's very rare! Nique was a bonafide superstar for a long ass time!
    There's a reason the league marketed MJ, Magic, Bird, Zeke, Chuck, and Nique so HARD! Guys who AREN'T LEGIT superstars don't get that type of attention! Very instrumental in helping the league grow. And u can't tell the story of Bird and MJ WITHOUT Nique in that story! Had flat out LEGENDARY DUELS against those icons. • @mattb1446
      @mattb1446 Před 4 lety

      Never to rough. Thats how game was meant to be. Todays game has just become to soft. Centers were centers back than not guards like they are today playing euro ball. 7 footers arent supposed to be shooting 3s and running the point guard position like they do today. They supposed to be posting up and blocking shots. Playing defense and grabbing rebounds. Its ashame there are 3 forwards in todays game not 2 and a center. Small ball has ruined the game for real. Its nice how lakers went big this year and have opportunity to bring the game back to how it used to be. Detroit couldve done this a few years ago when they had Drummond and monroe but they choose to trade Monroe they couldve killed it with two 20 and 20 guys plus 5 blocks. But traded monroe who went on to play only 20 minutes a game cause of small ball and still avg double double dominance in 20 minutes imagine his numbers if he played 40 minutes a game while detroit did same on there end now drummond dominating in detroit playing the minutes again but imagine if they had both bringing back old school game but it had to take lakers to go there this year to make it happen cause of cource cant be done by detroit only lakers can pull that off.

      Well. He had Reggie Lewis also. Don't act like Bird beat MJ by himself. It's a team game. MJ's numbers were better than Bird's overall, but Bird's teams were better. Celtics were better in the 80's than Chicago and it's no wonder why. Look at Chicago's team then. Even in the early 90's when Chicago were finally becoming legit contenders, Boston had a formidable team, albeit not as much as in the 80's due to age and injuries.
