It's crazy how it took Maxine singing a 'high' part for so many ppl in these comments to notice how dope she is vocally... This group was put together by audition; they can ALL sing.
Put together in 1989 by producers Denzil Foster & Thomas McElroy, also longtime production for mos of their platinum hits, they knew each sing voice well and choose which girl voice sounded best as lead vocalist on each song for most of the studio album projects.
When I heard "Hold On" for the first time and with the unison notes that were in the background from Dawn, Cindy and Maxine I could tell vocally that all 4 of them could sing. I grabbed the CD right after that. Max has so much versatility in the group she wasn't showcased as often until the Funky Divas album.
Morgan Colon she is because she grew up in Theatre more classical style of singing she actually was scared because she didn’t have as much soul as the other ladies.
Yes...they ALL can sing lead!!! I never seen a video for this song. Now I just saw who did what parts and they ALL sound good!!! This been my song since I was like 12 or 13 and im 41 now and STILL listen to it!!!
This song to me has always been the true representation of who they were as a group. I live for the way Maxine closes the song! She and Terry are my favorite vocally. Cindy is always flawless and polished. Dawn's voice is crystal clear.
Dawn and Cindy was hitting them high notes between 3:55 - 4:06. They are phenomenal at those soprano notes. Maxine is a beast period when it come to the vocals, she is never off and has the most range.
Until now, I had absolutely no idea that Max had so much range and power. She’s always singing the lower parts in the songs. Her vocals and range really shine on this song 🙌
These girls were so genuine, their Voices rang out all of the World! Its a shame that they group was cut short due to management. I wish that their friendship would have been stronger then the management could have never torn them apart. As a matter of fact, if they did what the song that they were singing (Got to be part of me) nothing could have come between them and they would have broken records for years to come! This is how powerful En Vogue was; It September 29, 2015 and not only am I enjoying this song, but I am clicking on every song on the side there to listen to everything that they sang all over again. Thank you for uploading this beautiful classic!
Dawn's departure is what really stopped them from success as well as management! Dawn's impact on the group singing and group wise always stood out she was like aubrey was to Danity kane the provocative looks they gave her made men and women took notice( IE TLC crazysexycool when Phife said he used to have a crush on Dawn from EnVOgue ) so when she made the decision to leave Envogue died that day literally! You can count EV3 and Masterpiece Theatre as the struggle albums and probably the lowest sales because of that !
Omg! I still have this performance on tape. Me and my friends formed a group of four so we mimicked En Vogue a lot. We used to sing all of their songs. I sound like Max. This was my song I loved to perform it.
Just the reason I fell in love with them all over again!! These ladies was the shit!! No other group compares vocally!! Yes we can argue because you see it!!!
Love this song and love Maxine's vocals at the end "she killed it!!! she has that soultry gospel flair and her vocal range is awesome!! I know that Dawn and Cindy alternate singing soprano and Terry normally handles the alto arrangement but these ladies are so gifted they can sing anything.
Robert Goldsborough Don't forget Terry too...a lot of times she's singing the top note. She's singing the top note for all the verses (except her lead) and in the chorus after Dawn's spoken word.
Sup "J" ...thanx for the reply ... I could be wrong, I love the versatility in his song " I LOVE IT BTW!!!!! Cindy has that natural soprano voice and Dawn has that nice tight pitch.
Robert Goldsborough no problem. You hit the nail on the head about Cindy's voice. I never understood why she didn't always sing the top note since hers sounded so much more natural than Terry's or even Dawn's, since it was much lighter but clearer. Terry would sing hers with more falsetto and head voice. Dawn couldn't get as high but she could get up there. I always found it even more odd that Cindy would sing the low parts when Max led when Terry had a much lower tone than her. Nevertheless, that was the allure of this group, that they could switch parts randomly without losing pitch or blend.
Every one was good on this..but Maxiine at the end..WOW..she has me in tears and Im a dude...I love when she just morphs into background vocals from the lead...at the very end.The producers Denzil Foster and Thomas Mcelroy were geniuses for putting the music and lyrics and vocals of these super talented women together.
I'm happy they let this go all the way to the end, and then some. Beautiful. I knew Maxine killed the end of this, hitting high notes a lot of people didnt know she could but she took it to another level here.
This is just a reminder of just how FINE all of those girls used to be! One of the most beautiful girls groups of all time, all I don't have to even say how wonderful they sound do I? As a group, the best sound ever period! I don't care just how many versions that you see of En Vogue, there is nothing like when these "ORIGINAL FOUR" are together! Nothing like it! And when these ladies wear their black, dresses it's all over with OMG!
I see all the comments saying the same thing about Maxine. People shocked she could get right up there in the vocals like that, possibly because this was the only song she was really able to let loose on. They all sound amazing of course, but Maxine I agree, this is THE performance.
So happy to see this...wow. This was one of favorite EV tunes. Me and my friends use to blow this in high school. I always enjoyed when Max was able to shine. This was such a lovely dispersement of the lead. Timeless thanks for the share.
One of the few girl groups that managed to carry on the legacy of girl groups from the past....outstanding singers, class and sensuality without bowing to vulgar, cheap displays of just trying to sell the song. These ladies got it!
Omgoodness! What did I jus hear? They sound like angels. I will forever love and respect Envogue! They were not one hit wonders relying on auto tune to get notes. They were truly blessed with some of the best vocals in the industry. P.s and they kept it classy on the sexy side. Who could ask for a better role model if trying to break into music. Hats off to you ENVOUGE!
Max took us to church at the end.
absolutely Bro

@@julslatt6294 They did a good job doing that.
Exactly
Max is the most underrated in the group.
She is
All killed it. Terry, Maxine, Dawn, Cindy.
Terry is so beautiful and has such a strong voice. Maxine was always underrated. She can blow.
Brown Sista yaasss all they vocals shined on this song..when i tell you somebody put these ladies voices together hunnny!
Maxine is the girl
I always felt Cindy was the underrated one
Morgan Colon she is because she grew up in Theatre more classical style of singing she actually was scared because she didn’t have as much soul as the other ladies.
@@kingbey9500 She did sound the most "proper" when talking and singing. (Cindy)
Damn they can sang!!! This is not a group, this is a super team.
It's a damn shame that these women are no longer a group.
BROOKLYNBEAST226 they still could be if they wanted to
BROOKLYNBEAST226 get it together girls or at least do it for the fans!!!!
BROOKLYNBEAST226 it is possible for groups can stay together, again if not come together for your fans at least
Ebony Rush Harrington They reunited in recent years but it didn’t last.
DAMN SHAME , SAD, THEY MAY REGRET THAT..... SPECIAL SPECIAL GROUP...
Cindy always sound so pretty, Terry is vocals all day, Dawn has a great texture to her voice and Maxine is the SOUL of EnVogue
Well said 👏🏿👏🏿
Say less
everyone always sums this up differently but I'll take it lol
Who's with me to start the petition to bring back the original En Vogue?
I'm down...
Me, me me,!!!!!!! Their is no En without the vouge
I'm down.
I'm DEFINITELY down !
Maxine killed it at the end!!
Maxine Jones, like Kandi Burruss of Xscape, gives their sound strong feet. My goodness! Her voice is like a warm coat in winter.
King Tutt That’s that Stephanie Mills type of soul!!!
@@kelamo7067 Yes ma'am. Yes.
Correct
Maxine! wow........
YES! People don’t understand the importance of a strong lower harmony to give depth and resonance
This is one of the best songs of all time!! Classic! No lip syncing!!!
This my favorite group of all time. They vocals was crazy. Cindy had a unique voice, they all could sing and lead.
I agree, Cindy does have a unique voice.
Cindy so gorgeous she could have been a solo artist ❤💫
Yes...they ALL can sing lead!!! I never seen a video for this song. Now I just saw who did what parts and they ALL sound good!!! This been my song since I was like 12 or 13 and im 41 now and STILL listen to it!!!
Chiseled Buff Daddy So does Maxine
@@cruzlane9448 Cindy wouldn't sound good by herself dawn had the voice to be solo
Gotta love Cindy's range at 3:55, too.
This song to me has always been the true representation of who they were as a group. I live for the way Maxine closes the song! She and Terry are my favorite vocally. Cindy is always flawless and polished. Dawn's voice is crystal clear.
yeah Dawn's mike is up louder than the other 3 girls because she had to do the "talking/rap" part.
Goodboy33 just pure perfection
There is no group without these 4.
SANNNNNNGGGGGG MAXINE!!!!
Terry Ellis always have made singing look so easy.
Anna Dee Looking like a young Ruby Dee
@@kelamo7067 She DO resemble dat woman!! 😆
I wanna be like Terry when I grow up
These ladies were indeed "Born To Sing".
Never knew Maxine's voice was SO BEAUTIFUL!!! Lovely!!!
Yassss those Funky Divas...the one female group from my childhood where each vocalist sounded equally amazing....LOVE this song
Well said.
Now that's the original envogue that I fell in love with!
AMEN!!
Omg Max killed that!!!!!!!!
Ain’t No Female Coming Close To These Ladies When It Comes To LIVE Vocal Performances ‼️‼️‼️
Maxine has great range, they all do....
Maxine Jones..... such a lovely voice and such a lovely looking woman
Yes, Maxine Jones has a unique voice, beautiful colour of voice is subtle and velvet and the same time powerful. Beauty of her voice is amazing.
She is, her poise and attitude is so inviting and she can sing!!
Dawn and Cindy was hitting them high notes between 3:55 - 4:06. They are phenomenal at those soprano notes. Maxine is a beast period when it come to the vocals, she is never off and has the most range.
Michele Johnson Terry has a strong and powerful voice too!!!
Michele Johnson actually Terry has the most range. 5 octaves.
Corey That’s why she is the first voice we heard when the group was introduced to the world!
@@Chris-cc5ne incorrect. Both Terry and Max have the same 4 octave range.
@@kelamo7067 Dawns voice brought in the most numbers
There's a reason that Maxine and Dawn sang the leads and the toughest vocal arrangements in their songs.
Rick L Terry is bad too now!!!
kelamo
Oh yes. Terry had the powerhouse voice.
@@nubiannile4606 dawn voice was more powerful than Terry by a Mike actually they sound alike
This song was deep to me, max voice sounds so jazzy
Maxine Ate That Up @ The End ❤
This song, this performance brought me to tears.
Maxine! Maxine! Maxine!
Wow Maxine definitely was underrated.. she can sang!!!
Dawn sounds so cute in the spoken section of the song I love en vogue and I'm only 17 where did positive music go
It's even prettier on the "album"/official version of the song when she says it much more gently.
Until now, I had absolutely no idea that Max had so much range and power. She’s always singing the lower parts in the songs. Her vocals and range really shine on this song 🙌
FINALLY A Performance Of This WHOLE Song...I'm Tired Of Them Cutting Off Maxine's High Note...Lol...Thank You God, Thank You Ginger....
Always loved the richness of Maxine’s voice.
They tore this song up! As someone stated this song is so relevant today in so many ways.
Harmonies still remain unmatched 🙌🏽 I love how they engineer their songs to suite their voices individually!
All four girls shine but Maxine for the win!
Queens ! Each of them. Maxine flawless
One of Max’s best performances vocally!!! Love her voice and Cindy’s voice so much
First, this is live. Which is amazing. Second, there's never been a female group whose beauty AND vocals compare to En Vogue's.
💯💯💯💯💯
I love all of them but Maxine is my favorite, I love her voice
This is the best I've ever heard Cindy sing! She definitely was on top of her game that day!!!
Maxine sounded the best here
This song is still relevant for today. I've always loved it.
Bring back the 4 original members please!

Ha! I did the same thing. Rewound that tape over so much that it's no longer any good. And we formed a group too. I was Terry Ellis.
The greatest girl group ever hands down
I think they are in the top 5 man or woman
This girls can outright sing. Everyone of them. I was saddened to see them break up. These voices are, magnificent. I love this song.
