  • This video shows how I upgraded the way wipers of my EMCO V13 lathe bed from the original felt-types to custom rubber wipers. This involved designing and machining custom carrier plates, fitting the wiper pieces and riveting them in place.

    The most over-engineered custom lathe way wipers I’ve seen … I LOVE IT 🤩
    The thoughtfulness from the starting materials to the execution of the finished product speaks volumes toward the level quality inherit in all the work you do.
    You see people investing enormous amounts of time and energy into grinding and scrapping the wear surfaces of their machines but then almost nothing toward debris mitigation. Having a clear and readily visible indicator to whether your wipers are working properly is something I had never considered but now that it’s been pointed out, it’s something I’ll definitely remember to look into going forward.

    You could hypothetically use both felt and rubber. The felt will still allow for lubrication after it no longer wipes effectively, and the rubber will wipe for a very long time.

    I would use 2K rubber cement instead of rivets. And the groove for the scraper is on the other side of the holder, on the seat side. I don’t have a milling machine, the holder can be made as a set of two plates that form a step and the plates can be connected in any convenient way.

    Oy, nice seeing you alive m8! Long time no see...
    Quite nice to see some work being done... I just spent 3 hours trying to set up a lathe bed for moving, only to have a catastrophic failure of the store bough winch... Not my welded up hoist, but a store bought, certified winch rated at 600kg... Shit snapped like a twig... Thank God i took care and every possible precaution as to avoid any potential damage from unforeseen nonsense... 3 bloody hours of set up, careful deliberation, gentle shifting and wrapping of end-less lifting loops, only to lower the pallet jack as to leave the lathe bed suspended in the air, and have it just sit back down on the planks i set between it and the lathe stand... Absolutely no damage, other than a broken winch, yet i was at least hoping for it to result in a cool video with a great message on moving of heavy machinery without help... Guess what... My fucking camera died at hour and half mark, leaving the other hour and a half of me explaining and working - a totally moot point...
    At least your work turned out better... Its a lovely design and damn nice work!

    Hi. You can buy wipers for Weiler E30 and have similar geometry. Maybe they fit whit less trouble. Nice work. I have a machine that I put the felt under the rubber.

    I'm looking to make my own as well. The originals on my lathe are rubber but they're worn. Chips can be embedded to the felt and that's why I would not use felt wipers ever.

    i am the non metric version of v13 same switch setup magnetically released break on the motor 2speed motor but there is no momentary power button as indicated in the generic manual we were able to find on line that is a 44page pdf i am hoping you know of another version that is available as step up for us and having a very spars operation instructions is a frustration (simply seeing the proper tool for oiling the carnage will make my life easier) though this barbarian will stick with his felt wipers i tend to run 2 stacked on top of one another a soft one made from winter boot liners with a denser felt used for gaskets behind it the soft one removes easily and is more of grit catcher and i punch them out as needed (farm shop) even whey trying to stay clean we are at best dealing with dust and chaff from equipment as it is dissembled and tracked around. i am very glad i found your channel and hello from Vermont usa

    On my old lathe tere are rubber whipers. They work really well and last for manu years.

    Good idea and nicely done. Did you consider using windshield wiper blades? Not as robust as the material you used, but they do have a SS backer, are reasonably tough, and probably less expensive. Might be more challenging to mount, and probably have to change them more often.. Just a thought.

    I feel like you could just make those mounting holes into slots. You just loosen the screws push it down to ensure seating and retighten.

      I was thinking this as well and will try to print a set for my lathe and milling machine. I have had good luck printing pistonseals for my small oilsucker out of tpu. Didn't expect it to work but it works very well. I would expect it would work well as a way wiper also.

      Works well, I did a double lip version sandwiched behind a stainless strip with pass through collars on each mounting screw to allow a solid mount without overcompressing the TPU

    Awesome work Alex. I wish I could buy a set for my V13. Did you consider using a combination of the felt and the rubber? The felt does hold some amount of oil I've noticed. It seems to absorb some oil and then release it.

      Weiler E30 has a similar geometry, try to find it may be it will work on Emco v13

      On all the industrial lathes I worked back in the day the wipers were made of felt. Using random rubber may not be appropriate as the oil used for guide lubrication will highly likely dissolve it. Many people never use oil on their machines. Whoever spotted leaving their machines with no oil on the guides was subject to fine at the plant I worked at.

    When you squish the concave geometry 27:40 by 0.5mm, aren't you worried to create openings in the corner-webs where three lips join? Would the glue hold it together sufficiently? Don't websearch for "Angular Cheilitis" :p

    Isn’t the point of the felt to retain the way oil? Doesn’t the rubber just rub it all off like water on a windshield?

    I have the emco super 11. It does not have lubrication points for the bedways within the saddle. So many aspects of this lathe are great but the absence of those ports and no oil groves on the ways are unfortunate omissions

      The Super 11 Engineers spent all money on the headstock and had to rush the bedslide :D

      Would make for a great upgrade project. Easy enough to drill some holes, chamfer and then embed a couple of oil ports. Who knows, you might have a lot of dirt under the saddle and a cleanup/inspection could be quite appropriate.

    why not make a springloaded velt wiper ? or a velt and rubber wiper togeter ?
    i wonderif cooling mist isn,t a serious healt risk for the lungs ? all those chemicals you inhale without knowing ?

      The oiler I use is a Reilang brand, but I don't recall the exact type any more.

    I was wondering, what is your prefered choice of oil for cutting operations, lubricating ways and lathe gearboxes?

      Very kind of you Sir, thanks. The cutting oil I use is Jokisch Alpha 93 and the way oil I use is 10W40. Yes, I know, that is strange, but it has high viscosity like way oil and I have very cheap access to it. For the gearboxes I use Eni Radula 46.
