They were quite grey in real life - the white is faded. A lot. The model is cool, and don't worry too much about the doors not being available in light grey. Train modelers often paint their bricks not to mention shave them for slopes like the one you mentioned at the start.
A few pointers: the roof of the grey ghosts are almost identical to the H cars particularly with the air-conditioning "humps". The trailers didn't have much under carriage appart from a few air tanks if you want I can email you my model of one so you can take whatever bits you want from it
It would be great if you could send me photos of your model, I really want to see a different approach to the design. Also thanks for the advice with the roof and undercarriage, greatly appreciated.
