I'm going through the top 20 Favorite Video Game Songs of all time as voted on by my community. This came in at number 4!
Now this is just a treat for me, I won't lie. I did this song all the way back in 2011 and I still have people say they listen to it regularly which is so flattering, but I knew I could do it way better when I saw it so high up on the list. The first thing I did before working on it was check the comments of that cover and see what people wanted more from it and the response overwhelmingly was THE CHOIR. This was very difficult for me at the time since it was only me at the time and I had no idea how to make it sound good.
Now the difference is that there is no difference, but I have the power of 12ish more years of experience behind me. I was able to sing all the male parts multiple times in different timbres and had Elana Fuentes (from the recent Weight of the World cover) do the female vocals similiarly and we ended up in a really cool place. I hope it fills the void that the first one had.
I had a bit of fun with the arrangement in the first cover, but this time I really leaned into not changing it up in hopes that I could make it sound even heavier by just drilling the hypnotic hits with no added synchopation to obfuscate it.
I used quite a few tricks, including doubling and octave pitching down all single note rhythm guitar parts using the amazing pitch shifter on the Petrucci model of Neural DSP, while keeping the main rhythm sound the Mesa Boogie Neural DSP which this is my first time using it in a cover! I really leaned into that since there's so many Dream Theater-esque riffs in this song. I'm happy where I landed with that.
We're getting into divinely prolific video game music here so there's a ton of pressure to get it right. I really hope I hit the mark on this one because it's insanely fun to play and was just a joy to put together for you guys this week.

One Winged Angel, the Bohemian Rhapsody of Final Fantasy. One of the best songs, but also the most well known and most played. This edition rocks!

True, it's a delightful song. I think the greatest "Final Boss Fight" song is "Otherworld" from FF-X. This channel covered that one too.

Amazing cover! Kind of surprised you played it straight and kept it to just FF7. The whole time I was expecting the breakdown from Advent Children's version to sneak in. You know the "veni mi fili, veni mi fili. Hic veni da mihi mortem iterum" bit.
I'm actually glad he didn't because every CZcamsr with a guitar does the Advent Children version. Was awesome to see Jules do the original.
@@Jpoteet52 I agreed the nice thing about Jules is he does a really good job keeping the original melody and overall "feel" of the song while adding his own take on it. Many CZcams guitarists are self taught and don't seem to have a good understanding of music theory when it comes to song writing. I have seen SO many "metal covers" where it's basically just the guitarist playing the exact same song they are covering verbatim, then just adding a little improvised solo in the middle and just calling it a day. It's sad because many of them are getting way more views and have much bigger channels. Don't get me wrong, I'm not gate keeping, or saying they aren't talented, or don't deserve the success, I'm just saying it's sad Jules is so underrated...

Never have I clicked on a notification so fast... This was my jam way back on 2013 when I discovered your channel. I remember grabbing the original choir and trying to make it fit to the cover. It has been quite the journey, following your work for a decade and witnessing your evolution as an artist.
The steady drum line really helps maintain the feel of the original

Such an amazing cover!!! Been on a binge of One Winged Angel covers lately so this was perfectly timed! My musically inclined 18 month old child immediately started jamming out as she does with most metal covers of anything so that was an absolute delight. Way to top off the year. One Winged Angel is my all-time favourite piece from any FF game and you have more than done it justice. Never thought I'd find a cover that matched the orchestral version, but this might just top it, phenomenal.

I'm of the opinion that One Wing Angel is so influential that it is THE reason so many boss themes include latin. It's a cornerstone of gaming history and sound design. I mean I've never even played FF7 but I know this song by heart. Ironically that means that Sephiroth will always be a memory to me.
