Great help. Thank you. In case this helps somebody else: One doesn't need to remove the spring to be able to replace wire.
I had the same problem with our daughters Dyson. Your film helped me a lot. It is not necessary however do open the spring compartment. I only ‘unwound’ it. My trouble was to find two new cable connectors (cable shoes?) to put on the end of the cable. The ones I could find were 7.4 mm. Today I am gonna put these on the cable, and I will try to get the machine together again.
Thanks I just saved £69 thanks to you ! I took the clear plastic side off first and saved re doing the spring. Thanks again !
Well, you made HARD WORK of that and even failed to pretension the mechanism to ensure that it retracted the cable.
There is a much simpler way to do it without risking the spring becoming apart. Basically, you do not undo the clips holding the two black parts together. That way, the spring stays safely coiled up in its housing. The secret is to detach the clear plastic part and this enables you to get to the cable. Spray the cable with silicone spray and then you can pull it through whilst pushing on the other end. Then you can cut off the broken cable, strip back the insulation and fix two new flag terminals. Put it back together and the pretension the spring by the right amount. Job done! I'll do a vid on my channel when I do the next one.
No apology for being negative but if you do a demonstration, you really ought to do the job properly.
Lack of rehearsal left us wanting.
Hello, failed to pretension the mechanism to ensure that it retracted the cable. Help ?
We'll await your video "kind sir"
Still helps. Thank you for the video!
Thank you for posting. This gave me some direction in fixing the same problem in my DC23.
I found I could get the clear plastic part off to get to the main connectors without unclipping and removing the spring assembly. I removed the small black ring as you did on the spring side then using pointed pliers squeezed the clear plastic shaft together and eased it through. However, it was tight. Then having eased it back a bit the spring wanted to uncoil so I allowed this to happen, I'll have to wind it back when I get the cable back on. Unfortunately, having cut the cable back and tested it from the plug with an ohm meter there was still a break, so I cut the plug off and still no through connection so I've had to order a new cable. Just hope I can get it back together OK.
Thanks for the video it was extremely useful mistakes and all, I probably wouldn't have attempted it otherwise but I didn't fancy recoiling the spring!
Also thanks to all the others who have commented below, some useful tips. Always a good idea to read the comments for ideas before tackling the job, I should have done that first. Doh!
Fair play to you for trying to sort this nightmare of a thing!
Thanks for the comment much appreciated
what i admired most on your video is, you have clean nails even though you are working on a dirty vac cleaner. and that says something about you 👍👌
Thanks!
Well done. Thanks to You I didn't screw up the spring. Always try to learn on other people's mistakes. Thumbs up for the vid mate.
Good to hear the video helped!
There is ABSOLUTELY NO NEED to pull out the spring!! Just the little clip in the middle is enough to get the shaft out to access the cables on the other side. Off course you CAN pull out the spring in case you have nothing else to do, but it does not help you in any way to repair the damaged wires.
Used this vid to repair my cable mate - thanks very much - although after spending three hours trying to wind that spring back up, mine ultimately didn't retract either - I was gutted lulz
I felt the same but at least it worked!
Years later... At the time you posted this comment about your cable reel spring failure, I had exactly this same problem on my Dyson DC39. So here I am today, have another go... and the reel works just fine, by itself with the rest of the vacuum cleaner disassembled...
Merry xmas to you and your family!
Zed Man thanks! Have a great Christmas and New Year!
grazie.....utilissimo

Dude, did you shoot any video on how you wound up the spring. I have an old Eureka 1756 I was trying to clean the contacts and being so careful but it popped out anyway. The outside of the spring is spot welded to that cage so i have to wind it with the cage attach . Any tips would be helpful.
Just a hint - Although the spring looked wound tight, it wasn't. If you put the machine back together with the cord wrapped around the reel then pull it out, it will retract. The trick is to wind it up a bit more while outside the machine to get it to pull in tightly.
@@geplayer I mean that after removing the retract mechanism, pull some cord out and manual wrap it back on the spool. This way the spring has more force when you pull it out and retracts faster when you let go.
@@geplayer My Dyson DC21 Stowaway Canister Vacuum is going strong after 23 years and I found it in the curbside trash!
I had some trouble with opening the cable retract mechanism, Thanks a lot for showing how to open it. but did you find a way to fix the coil so that is does retract, that would be handy because I still have to wind the coil
Thanks for the comment, sorry I never managed to get it to retract.
@@GeekStreet Then it kinda wasn't repaired, was it?
You certainly stuck to your topic, but left a lot of interesting parts out by taking them 'off camera'. Pity.
But but but.... The coil mechanism
I just want my auto rewind to work again. How can I follow the advice if it didn’t work? Still, I got some pointers...
The dogs chewed through my wire on my DC39 hoover. Can I just buy a new cable or does it have to be the whole pulley system? Thanks
Depends on the cut location if you have ample cable then buy a 3 plug, cut where the dog chewed and attach the plug.
WIND THE CORD UP BEFORE CLOSING THE CORD UNIT NEXT TIME, CORD RETRACT WILL WORK!
i think what you did wrong was to leave the cable loose... should have wheeled it around it. By pulling it out once closed it will get the tencion in the spring.
im possibly gonna have a dc 19 up for repair soon. tnx for the descriptive and closed up video
well done
Thanks for the comment, yes definitely I should have winded it up. I took it back out and tried again but it did not not work, as the hoover was working I couldn't be bothered to spend more time on it so left as is.

@@GeekStreet *You're
I have a problem with my Dyson DC08, it wont start. I bought a replacement motor which works when connected to the mains but when connected to it´s normal cables it just won´t start. I thought the problem might be with the cable, and I followed your tutorial (kept away from the coil!!!) and it´s not that. The switch also seems to work. Any ideas?
There's not much in the hoover, cable, motor and switch. You tried replacing the fuse? Plug? And then perhaps try a different cable?
Ernesto Caldwell its* normal

Hi I have problem with Dyson would you be able to help pleasa
What the the issue? Perhaps I may have ideas on how to check.
Geek Street. Hi.Thanks for messeging. There is something wrong with engine or something else. It's wird becase its loosing a power. And it have a noise like some one making popcorn.
Perhaps give it good clean so the dust collector and the area near the motor.

i would said , the most expensive vacuum give us most common see low quality problem. and its not easy to repair
Call me old fashioned, but the thing is in bits before you film
Looks like a right pain in the ass! Hence why I have a Henry ;)
bomberman30 thanks for the comment. A real hassle yes, I've had it 7 years so far.... hopefully another 10 years after this fix ... Lol
This too much mines well buy a new one
Why make a damn video WHEN CORD REWIND ITS NOT WORKING!!!
Amateur hour. Unwind the tension from the spring. It doesn’t need to come out at all for that repair.
I didn't say I was a pro, but the main thing is I now have a working hoover!
Lol seriously if you got that spring back in on your own and now have a “working” vacuum which includes a working retractor I’ll eat my hat.
@@waynehalliday8503 GS says elsewhere that he never got retractor working.
Kinda defeats the purpose of a repair imo.
@@GeekStreet Be honest, your vid is downright useless and should be removed. It will leave viewers with as big a mess as you developed yourself. Take it down FFS.
As a full-time vacuum repairer....that was tough to watch. I'm embarrassed for you.
