  • On this Kim Mitchell Interview, Kim talks about how Max Webster came together, and why the band ultimately broke up… working with Joe Walsh “almost”... opening for Black Sabbath, why he never opened for Kiss, an emotional experience he had while watching Allan Holdsworth, hanging backstage with Eddie Van Halen… the backstory to his new record and some of the songs on it… moving through a low point in his life when he lost a parent, his marriage broke up, and he was at a musical low - and how he came back even stronger… making your bed, race cars, his guitars & amps, curiosity and more. AWESOME conversation, lots of energy and lots of laughs - a MUST!

The one thing no one EVER talks about with Kim Mitchell is his amazingly underrated guitar playing. you don't do session work without talent. I had the pleasure of photographing a corporate event where Bernie Labarge was playing (another unknown brilliant session player). The night was amazing and he just doesn't miss.

I'm a retired educator, but spent a decade managing and producing a progressive instrumental 'shredder' through the mid '90's/2000's. My time away from the school was steeped in the music scene; I was also a contributing writer for a Dallas music paper, "The Harder Beat." It was fun, because I was able to choose my subjects. Pat Travers, another favorite Canadian guitarist, was playing a local club this night, and when I dropped by during the day to arrange my interview, I left a CD by the artist I was managing. In speaking with Pat after his show, one of his first comments was "I really don't get what these shredders see in me." While I empathize with Kim's bout of nerves, I have no doubt LaBrie saw something in Kim he couldn't get from Petrucci. Great interview, Craig, you have a new sub. One of the reasons he is the guitarist’s guitarist; he has amazingly fluid playing (in the 70’s few guys could play with the flow and speed he could) but he didn’t do the overboard ego-driven solos of other “guitar gods.” His solos were about the song; fit in perfect, not pointless showboating. Total class.

I saw him in 1998 at Alice Fazooli's restaurant in Mississauga, Ontario. He had his then famous pink hat on and he was talking to a very nice looking brunette at the bar. I wanted to say hello, but it was his private time and after hearing this interview that would have been during those rough times, so I'm glad I didn't. Kim & Peter Fredette made some of the best music to come out of Canada. Peter Fredette doesn't get the credit he deserves. He's the other vocalist in "All We Are". Wonderful interview. I was part of the music scene in Ottawa in the 80s and 90s. Quite a lot of great local musicians made a lot of great music that went nowhere else.

Kim Mitchell, i always like what he does, great songs, super great musicianship in his band, as a drummer i always like the drummers he played with, and the production of his albums was always amazing. I am glad i have seen him twice, one in the mid 80s and another time 30 years later, and it was always great.

    Some terrific stories.
I saw Max Webster open for Rush at Hammersmith Odeon on the Hemispheres tour (IIRC) in '79. They were well received which, at that time in the UK, was anything but assured for a support act. I picked up a couple of albums (Hangover and Live Magnetic Air) off the back of that performance. Never heard any more from them after that. Really interesting to learn how things panned out for Kim and will be checking out his solo catalogue.

Kim is a music/guitar genious. I noticed that as soon I came to Canada back in 1986. He had a big hit album that year. It was all over the waves and TV. Being from Yugoslavia I knew of and heard Brian Adams, Rush, Loverboy, Triumph, the Guess Who, to name a few, but never heard of him. As soon as I would point out Kim's greatness to my new Canadian friends they would tell me "Oh, you should hear his old band Max Webster, that was the real deal". Fast forward some 30 years I met him at a car wash(?!?) in Toronto. He asked me first something about my car(white BMW) while he was waiting for his to come out. When it came out it was also a white BMW.😂. I made sure to tell him how much admire him, that I play guitar too, that Ritchie Blackmore was my guitar hero to which he replayed: "Mine too!" at which point I melted. He worked as a DJ on the Toronto's biggest radio station for quite a few years...he was great, he has a great voice for radio too. Love the guy and wish him all the best. They don't make them like that anymore.😅

I first heard and became aware of Max Webster when they opened for Rush in Houston, TX. I have to say they were quirky & great and the guitar tone was really, really good. I think it was a 335 into a Hiwatt ? Maybe a Twin.. lol it was awhile ago! Me and my friends were thinking that they dressed kinda wild 😂!!
I bought all their records after that night! Hello Kim! We love ya!

Wonderful interview with a one-of-a-kind, true original! I’ve been a fan since hearing Battlescar on the radio in Wichita, KS in-approximately-1981-82, on the fantastic-and now, extinct-KICT-95 FM. Naturally, I was a gigantic Rush fan, and knowing of Max’s existence, I was primed and ready to be a fan. Luckily, many years later, I went on a vacation to Victoria and Vancouver, Canada-in 1998, and was able to find CDs of the entire Max collection, plus a Kim solo album I didn’t have! Wonderful music-especially, Universal Juveniles and Kim’s first two solo albums. So great to hear such a complete history of his life! Great job and thanks for doing this!! 🤘🏻🎸🤘🏻

What a great interview. I remember seeing Kim in a park in Toronto in the late 80's and was really wanting to go over and say hi, but he was with his partner and kid and it just seem like it wouldn't be cool (the fellow Canadian kindness factor!). I really resonate with the challenge of getting through struggles and what it takes to get to the other side. I've always loved his music either with Max Webster or on his own, which I discovered around 1979, but to hear his story and the frank and unabashed discussion about it in this interview kicked my respect up for him exponentially. Yes, we should always be able to have conversations like that at any time. If I had the opportunity again I would still like to meet him and sit down and chat. Kudos on the interview!

I believe that they recorded the crowd intro at Uncle Sam's in Niagara Falls the night I attended and yes...... we all sang "The cats in the bag, the neighbors holler.....etc, etc. One of the more inspiring guitarists of those days. there was always a Zappa-esque element to the tunes, probably inspired by Beefheart, as Kim mentions.

This is such a great interview... it's more like a chat with a friend. I'll always be a big Max and Kim fan. I remember one Max show, I think it was a co-headlining tour with the Ian Thomas band - Saskatoon. I was prob. about 16 yrs. Old at the time. Leaning on the stage and checking out Kim's pedalboard before the show. So many memories go with Max and Kim music! One very special album to me is "Ain't Life Amazing". Around that time my Dad passed away, the girl I thought was the love of my life left and the company I worked for announced layoffs. It was all devastating. Kim's "Ain't Life..." album was in constant play in my car and I know it helped me get through it all! I'll always miss my Dad and thankful that he was my Dad, the girl's memory still haunts me, but I got a new job, moved on and eventually realized life really is amazing. Thx. Kim for all the music!
