Nick was really just playing himself at the end.
In Nick's defense, last time they did the conch, a certain somebody did try to change last second and got punished for it, so at least he went down sticking to his guns.

The ultimate play would've been: "Magic conch, if I were to ask you whether I can get the star, would your answer be equal to your answer to this question I'm currently asking?"
Magic conch says "yes" -> answer to "can I get the star?" is the same -> can get the star
Magic conch says "no" -> answer to "can I get the star?" is the opposite -> can get the star
Although they'd probably agree to ban "would your answer be equal to this" constructs right afterwards.

I mean ultimately, it's a 50-50, you can't really call the right option at the time. It's the same as saying if Vernias in the previous game used reverse, he would have gotten two more stars.
