      @@KevinGsWKdepends on what specifically he said. Grunge really was similar to the aggression and release of frustration of late 70s early 80s punk rock, and that’s cool. But compared to Yngwie they can’t play 😂 that’s not even an insult, just a fact. What is there to disagree with here?

      @@bubbaburdle4693 His assessment of grunge was spot on from a mass media perspective. Kurt Cobain became the standard during this era, every idiot with a microphone hung on every single heroin-steeped fit of gibberish the came out of his mouth, and much of it was a hack condemning virtuoso musicianship. He wasn't jealous, he honestly read the room and every flannel-toting fool had a crying fit over it.

    • @hellsunicorn
      @hellsunicorn Před 7 měsíci +5

      @@bubbaburdle4693 To be fair, there were several decent guitarists to come out of Seattle during that era, I can respect what Jerry Cantrell and Mike McCreedy brought to the table, but the overall ideological bent of the entire Grunge movement was decidedly and obnoxiously anti-virtuoso. Kurt Cobain had the exact attitude towards any guitarist (including the two I just mentioned) who ever played a semi-technical lead break. It was utterly ridiculous and good on Yngwie for being one of the few 80s icons with the balls to actually call it out.
      I’ll admit that Malmsteen has some ego issues, but I think what he said here is partly due to his limited English, at least with regards to “allowing grunge bands to play” (I think the word he was looking for was either sign or promote). But just so we’re clear, there were bands who were dropped from their labels solely because they were associated with the glam scene and many older metal acts were even barred from playing at many venues. You could say Malmsteen was overreacting, but ideologically speaking, it looked more like fighting fire with fire, for better or worse.

      @@JeremyPezzeca I've been a fan of Yngwie, and a guitarist, since the beginning of his career. Yngwie lives in a bubble though. He's wrong about the Grunge guys not being talented. What is musical talent? To me it's in the writing, and Yngwie first four solo albums and the Alcatrazz years were great, then it got stale. He's an amazing player, but I have to be "in the mood". Whenever AIC comes on the radio in the car, I stop scanning. It's really that simple.

    There is something I've always like about Yngwie. He is really not trying to be malicious, in fact he is trying to be as respectful and polite as his personality allows him to be lol. I kinda understand his point. Imagine practicing 8 hours per day, sacrificing time of your youth and then comes someone who plays only chords and sells an amount that he hasn't been able to achieve yet. Most be upsetting. The thing he doesn't realize is that he is a different kind of artist. He is a performer and a virtuoso. The other one is an artistic soul who probably spent only a few hours practicing and has no interest at all in other than expressing himself and reprresent the voice of a minority and for that, he only needs to know a few chords and some basic knowledge. Two entirely different things. One has what the other doesn't have. As simple as that.

    The fact is... a very small percentage of people want to hear a masterclass in instruments at all times. We love it. Guitarists who hear or watch it get inspired and can't wait to go home and shred and get faster and better.
    Some musicians are song writers more than instrumentalists.
    And some musicians wrote for people. And most people don't play music. Simple is more relatable. They want something they can sing along to on the way to work, without having to be trained to do so. Nirvana works because people feel like they could be a part of the band.

      Writing music that touch people isnt the whole point of music, thats just the trap to fall into bending to other ppls demands, therefore you, musically, dont matter to them. The whole point of music is to express yourself with an instrument and being heard by someone, be it 3 ppl or 8 billion. Thats a misconception, that art, to be art has to appeal to masses, therefore the ppl you're playing for are more important in the first place than what u actually have to say through music. Thats the great thing about music, that it sets you free from other ppls concern about how you do it and what you should do instead, there are politics and laws for that. If ones freedom through music is viewed by others as egocentric, so be it. Music s more democratized than ever with the social media platform, ppl are their own labels and channels and have a voice on the internet. But expressiveness through a musical instrument or vocal talent should never depend on other ppl s veiw, especially of they dont understand music, they just cant hear what's going on, even if they do, their view on that isnt as deep and intimately accquinted as of the creators themselves. A musician should be egocentric and jealous of his art expression if they believe in it, at first, and later realise that the world doesnt revolve around them and it can keep turning without them, so the musician wont be afraid to be themselves knowing that u cant PHUCKING please everyone. The point to be an artist is to gather ppl to behold what youre about to bring about before them, and the means to it are talent and the niche in wich you level the playing field for it to take place. This is why Yngwie s successful, no matter how many artists can gather 3000 times more than yngwie s amount of followers, many of them havent opened ppls ears to a delightful genre and expression. His musical formula is flawed but its a fact he has inspired many ppl to play guitar and to be true to themselves. Period

You can have all the technical skill in the world, but if there's no heart, no emotion, no feeling, it's not worth anything. Yngwie Malmsteen's music is all skill and no soul. Yngwie is an absolute legend. Not only a guitar virtuoso that changed electric guitar but a great musician and song writer. He goes from Neoclassical hard rock to almost pop without loosing his essence. He represents the “can do” attitude and of course triggers the resentful ones. Hell I even heard other great musicians talking about his politics and now I respect him even more. He’s a true American to say the least.

      He also treats his musicians like shit, shoves them into the corner of the stage for his live gigs. I agree that he's a good song writer but I think seeing him live was the worst performance I've ever been to. He used to hire brilliant singers but now insists doing it himself, and while he can sing, his voice lacks character. It's a backing voice, not a lead voice. And they'll play his songs but extend the solo by minutes and add new parts completely unrelated to the song structure for him to solo over. They never end up coming back into the final chorus, the solo just ends it. And he plays the same licks over and over.

    • @adamrasmussen9939
      @adamrasmussen9939 Před 7 měsíci +11

      Think that might be why history remembers most of them as COMPOSERS, and not 'musicians'?
      A musician, by definition, PLAYS a musical instrument, or multiple. A composer arranges EVERY part for EVERY instrument in a piece and then directs the musicians to help them play what he's scored on paper for each one of them.

    • @joaosustelo5628
      @joaosustelo5628 Před 7 měsíci +1

      @@adamrasmussen9939 I always thought of a musician as someone who 'works' with music, has some theoretical or pratical knowledge about music and can compose.
      When I was studying there was a guy who was infinitely better and had way better technique than me at playing guitar, which was impressive. He was really good. I am very normal and lost interest in improving my skills a long while ago. BUT, if I hear a melody, if its not that technically challenging like Dream Theater, or I hear a chord, I can play it on guitar or sing it in a few seconds and I dont have perfect pitch, I only have relative pitch.
      He, on the other hand would hear the simplest melody and would look very confused and couldnt play it. He probably has improved a lot after that
      I dont think people realize how much talent it requires to create a song on a computer, or come up with all these tracks or layers and put them together, and I am not really a fan of electronic music but I can appreciate artists like Deadmau5. The future of music is going to be electronic because computers can do what we do with instruments and more...
      My favourite band ever (in rock/metal atleast) is Deftones, which is not that technically challenging, although they do some odd time signatures. But nobody does what they do. These guys understand music in a way that no other band or musician understand and in my opinion are arguably the most creative/original band ever in the rock/metal genre.

    • @adamrasmussen9939
      @adamrasmussen9939 Před 7 měsíci +2

      @joaosustelo5628 Maybe I'm missing your point, but I wasn't grading 'musicians' and 'composers' on a sliding scale, or suggesting a certain level of proficiency was required to be one versus the other, I was just noting that 'history' has remembered the composers of classical music very broadly with accentuating details of their childhood and adolescence and tragic events that may have befallen them throughout their lives. Meanwhile, the actual performers of that music have not been remembered almost at all. This continues into today's modern 'classical' genre, we still have popular composers like John Williams, but most performers with almost ANY professional orchestra are unknown outside their industry. I believe this to be the case because replicating something great is a LOT easier than *CREATING* something great.
      Last, I would say most children 'know' what many musical instruments do, and can differentiate between the look and sounds of many different instruments. But if they can't use that knowledge to replicate even a little bit of actual music, then no, I don't consider them a musician. I don't care if someone was a professional luthier, I wouldn't automatically consider them to be a musician if they can't play (at least some of) the instruments they are working on. Obv most luthiers, piano techs etc DO know how to play, it's just an example.
