The Bad Science of Micellar Shampoo

  • Recently shampoo companies have started marketing their shampoo as "micellar shampoo". This is deceptive marketing...because all shampoo and any hygiene product used for washing already has "micellar properties".

The worst part for me is that I have known for ages now about exactly how soap works, that it's the same principle in all kinds of cleaning products, and even that the molecule aggregations are called micelles. And yet, I never connected the dots and realized on my own that "micellar" water and "micellar" shampoo are simply referring to the damn fundamental mechanism! At least I not knowing how things work makes me doubt them rather than buy them...

@Lucas Zhu micellar water is literally a product sold to women to clean off makeup. That's why the comment separates the two products, because they are sold as 2 "different" products.
Some cleansers appear more "watery" less viscous, while others are thicker and feel "more oily or balmy"- more viscous. Example- miscellar water vs ponds cold cream. Both are used to remove makeup etc.

From my experience, using it to remove makeup is better than using just soap on your face, makeup remover, or even a face cleanser. I use it to wipe away the rest of the makeup that the cleanser didn't get, especially around the eye area. It also doesn't burn as much as makeup remover wipes. It's also pretty inexpensive so even if it's just gimmicky, it won't really have drastic effects on my life.

The idea is that it doesn't strip the natural oils from your hair. A lot of people(mostly women, especiallycurly girls) are DEATHLY afraid of sulfates in their shampoos these days and shampoo in general for some reason, so they push for sulfate free alternative to clean their hair without '"stripping " everything. This is silly of course since there are plenty moisturizing shampoos and even COLOR shampoos(shampoos that preserve the vibrancy of your dyed hair)with sulfates... and of course, due to what you just said.
That being said, micellar water shampoo itself probably isn't that effective at deep cleansing if it doesn't have some detergents in it.
The argument, especially the facial ones, is that it is able to make the detergents even more efficiently form micelles.

  • @Mr371312

I mean, I doubt this is actually the case, but it might be worth looking into. Micellar water can apparently be used without rinsing. 99% sure its bullshit marketing wank, and I'm a bald guy so I have no interest in this whatsoever, but it might have a teeny tiny kernel of something legit that has been blown completely out of proportion like normal

Ok, a few things you may have missed as a non cosmetics type a guy- “micellar water” is a real thing. A popular form of makeup remover is just called “micellar water.” It is basically just surfactants and water that is meant to break down cosmetics and then wipe off without residue. I think the reason these marketers are choosing to call these shampoos “micellar shampoo” is because they think their target demographic will associate the cleansing ability of micellar water products to the cleansing ability of their shampoo. Is it still total BS marketing meant to be deceptive? Oh yeah. Is it scummy and should be called out? Absolutely. But thought I’d add this context because I’m not sure if you were familiar with “micellar” products in the cosmetics market.

I mean, I don’t use the shampoo that I use because of what I watched in a TV commercial, but because it suits my hair type, the weather of the country I live in, etc. Not because all shampoos are meant to clean means every shampoo will suit you. L’Oreal Micellar Shampoo works differently on my hair than their Keratin Shampoo or their Protein Shampoo, etc.

😅idk if i should explain.... Micellar shampoo is actually a bit different in their constitution. Many shampoos do cause irritation because of high non fatty emollient contents like panthenol or glycerin that do not effectively slip off from the scalp. Adding lower than 1% oil in a formula will solve the issue. Fast absorbing oils mimicking sebum is used in this case. Nothing will remain to buildup in the scalp and cause irritation or dandruff. The name Micellar technology does not come from forming "micells" but rather some emulsifying agents which were newly invented to aid dissolving low percent oil. With regular emulsifier atleast 7% oil has to be added or seperation might occur. Plus these emulsifiers cause drandruff in many people. Without emulsifier some surfactants do allow oil dissoolving but at very low percentage with high chances of seperation with time. 😅.. 😅... The manufacturer probably told them abt the micellar technology. The advertising agency had no idea this teach aint the same as the common micellar property if surfactants😂😂😂😂... I didn't know the products that are being sold in the market... Didnt know these were marketed this way... Its ..... Funny... 😂yes micellar shampoo is better if formulated correctly. ... 😅sad most people dont know the full story. And never will know.
