In modern basketball, the most common way to score is through attacking mismatches due to the diverse skillsets at all positions. In the Brooklyn Nets' matchup vs the Boston Celtics, Jayson Tatum and the Celtics sought out Cam Thomas as the universal mismatch. But although Cam Thomas isn't a great defender, he is a phenomenal offensive player. So while the Celtics where getting points on Cam, Cam Thomas was able to counteract that with his offense.
So in today's video, we analyze how mismatches in basketball can be able to remain effective and maintain a spot on the floor.

yeah even if he scored 70 that half he still would've been a defensive liability. problem here is that comparing points produced by a player vs points scored against them to show they're still worth playing is just wrong. quality of shots, for example, matter a lot over the course of an entire game. cam scoring 10 points hitting 5 contested jumpers isn't the same as the celtics getting 10 points +2 fouls scoring easy on a dude that doesn't have a clue how to cover the post. celtics are wasting minimal energy scoring points on cam. as great of an offensive player cam is and how much we love that rainbow jumpshot, the boost he gives u on offense isn't always going to outweigh the horrendous disadvantage he puts you at on defense, and that's not something that can't be decided simply by the amount of points cam scores that day. we don't need him to turn into a lockdown defender now or ever, just a competent one who actually puts in effort and sprints to rotate.

lol bro you’re right, cam. 100% the defense liability and get picked on every game but he can score so that’s okay. That’s stupid he should be putting in effort on defense to least make players sweat a little.
All those play against cam was easy just can’t make it all.

This was a great breakdown but I never understood the nitpicking of guard defense, they will always be at a disadvantage because of their size. Jrue Holiday one of the best defenders for his position was punked in the playoffs by Jimmy Butler because Jimmy had the size advantage. Guards just have to be great offensive players to make up for that and that's something Cam is developing. He's in his 3rd season but this is really his 1st season getting consistent mins in a prominent role.

You can have a size disadvantage and still be smart on defense. There are guards that have really bad defense like Thomas or Lillard because they make too many mistakes, it's not only because of their build. You don't become a better defender by scoring more points, you actually learn how to defend and put in the work and it will make the difference.

This was a pretty good breakdown and it’s also the first video I’m watching on your channel. I hope to see more in the future.

Good breakdown, but I don't really get the title or the actual message. Even if you outscore the whole other team, you might still have a worse net rating than a player that actually defends (assuming you weren't the only person that could score a bucket on your team). Basically all the points you score get erased by your lack of defense and by the fact that they will target you.
I think you can compensate for someone being a defensive liability as a team, like the Nuggets did with Jokic with their whole double team and shifting of the defense whenever Jokic got targeted. But scoring more doesn't really fix anything.

good video it shows the bad chemistry on D by the Nets but i dont know why are the baskets from celtics on cam. they switching on every screen and thats what hes doing, on the first play he switching like brooklyn does on every screen with every player and Ben is to late, t he 2. its a good contest against tatum. the 3rd is on him he got beaten and is just watching after the post on jrue is overhelping by the others and not on cam either on 4:30 is a to early switch right but claxton shouldnt run after holiday, the paint is closed and he should take on White. i can go on, Cam isnt a good defender but he isnt as terrible as people say, mostly hes missing the experience and brooklyn has no chemistry the D isnt better with Cam on the bench.
