- How to train for sprints and long distance.
In this video I discuss some of the differences and similarities in outrigger canoe sprint and distance racing. Focusing on energy system contributions which may surprise most paddlers.
Enjoy!

This is a great explanation for folks just getting into the science of sprint vs distance. I’m sharing it with my fellow dragon boaters who are getting into outrigger for distance. Thanks, Tupu!
I'm so stoked these videos are out there.
Thanks for sharing bro, it all makes sense. Great tips!
obrigado por compartilhar sua experiencia, manda um aloha para Saquarema-Brasil.

In OC6 marathons we are often encouraged to pull hard for the first few huks to get up speed. Is this generally recommended?
It’s okay to get off the start line and out of trouble but now super necessary for marathons haha.
For long distance races I used to go out at the pace I would use for the main body of the piece but the water is so bad behind several dozen OC's or even more that I understand now why you go out pretty hard to get clean water then move into your race pace.
Maybe use some graphics to support your percentages etc, can be simple on paper/board or PowerPoint?????
Seems Garmin muddies the water some, calling Zone 5, 90 to 100% Threshold into anaerobic. What percent of possible output really is anaerobic? 97%+? I'm certainly not doing 44 minutes anaerobic in an hour race...
If I go out and paddle 10 miles a couple days a week, is that considered "long distance"? Would doing, say, 15 miles (or just 5 miles) be better?
80% aerobic work and 20% anaerobic work for training.
Depends where you are. Im 50% anaerobic right now preparing for sprint championships in 4 weeks time
